SLOANE

I watch the pack from my window before the sun’s fully up, the way I do most mornings now. Training yard filling in slow rows. Smoke curling up from the kitchens. A pack that didn’t exist two years ago, built out of nothing but spite and grief and a stubborn refusal to stay broken.

It still doesn’t feel like it belongs to me some mornings. Other mornings it’s the only thing that does.

Kieran knocks once, out of habit more than necessity, and lets himself in before I answer.

  • Bring Him to His Knees   The almost kiss

ROANI didn't follow her immediately. I gave her three minutes. Three minutes to reach the cool night air of the balcony. Three minutes to think she was alone. When I stepped through the heavy timber archway onto the stone terrace, the noise of the feast died down into a muffled roar behind me. The night air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and crushed frost from the peaks above. Sloane was standing at the edge of the stone hill, her hands gripping the cold granite, her head tilted up toward the pale light of the moon. Her dark hair fell over one shoulder, exposing the smooth curve of her neck. She didn't turn around when my boots scraped against the stone, but I knew she felt me. The air between us immediately grew heavy, electric with that old, unbroken pulse that had always existed between us. "You're tracking dirt onto the stone," she said quietly, her voice barely carrying over the breeze. "It's dirty stone, Sloane," I replied, stopping a few feet behind her. "I

  • Bring Him to His Knees   Out the shadows

ROAN The noise of the Moonrise Feast carried deep into the perimeter line, but from where I stood beside the stone boundary marker, it felt like listening to a celebration through thick water. I turned the wooden cup in my hand, watching the reflection of the hanging lanterns ripple across the dark surface of the wine. Across the clearing, the Ashborn banners swayed in the night breeze alongside the crest of Thane’s pack. Everywhere I looked, wolves were laughing, drinking, and tearing into roasted meat. Thane had built an island of light in the middle of a war zone, and right at the center of it stood Sloane. I hadn’t moved closer to the primary tables since the delegation arrived. I stayed near the outer edge of the covered pavilion, close enough to keep the Duskmoor warriors within my line of sight, but far enough into the shadows that I wouldn’t force Sloane to look at me every time she turned around. "You look miserable," Marcus said, stepping up beside me. He didn’t bo

  • Bring Him to His Knees   Tonight belongs to you

SLOANEThe celebration has settled into a comfortable rhythm by the time I notice Roan standing apart from the Duskmoor delegation, speaking with Selene.I had seen her earlier, but I had deliberately avoided looking in their direction long enough to convince myself it did not matter. Now, however, there is no avoiding it.Selene stands close to him, dressed in a dark green gown that catches the lantern light whenever she moves, and she is speaking with the ease of someone who has known exactly where she belongs beside him.I cannot hear their conversation from where I stand, but I can see the occasional movement of her hand and the way Roan listens without interrupting. For a fleeting, irrational moment, an old ache stirs beneath my ribs. It is ridiculous.I have no claim over him anymore, and whatever exists between Roan and Selene is none of my business. Still, watching another woman stand beside the man who was once mine carries a bitterness I cannot simply reason away.I look awa

  • Bring Him to His Knees   The party

The invitation arrives at Ashborn that morning, carried by one of Thane’s messengers and sealed with the crest of his pack. It is not a council gathering, nor another meeting about the Unbound, and for once, there are no ancient records or damaged wards waiting to demand our attention. Thane has simply decided that surviving the sanctuary deserves to be acknowledged, and he has chosen to celebrate it with a feast large enough to bring together Ashborn, Duskmoor, and his own pack. By the time we arrive at the Moonrise grounds, the place is transformed. Hundreds of lanterns hang from the branches surrounding the clearing, their warm light spilling across long wooden tables decorated with silver branches, wildflowers, and bowls of glowing fruit. Music drifts through the air from a group of musicians seated beneath a covered platform, their instruments producing a slow, beautiful melody that seems to settle over the gathering like another layer of enchantment. Wolves from different pack

  • Bring Him to His Knees   The transformed ward

By the time Ashborn appears through the trees, the sun has begun its slow descent toward the horizon, casting the stone walls in a muted gold. I recognize the familiar towers beyond the gates, but instead of feeling relieved, I find myself watching the compound with a growing sense of unease. The journey back has given me too much time to think about the sanctuary, the black crystal and everything Roan and I discovered, and I am still trying to separate what I know from what I merely suspect. Kieran is beside me as we approach the gates, Del seated on the other side of the car, and neither of them has said much since we left Duskmoor. Thane follows close behind us in the second vehicle with two of his guards, having met us on the road, and when both cars finally come to a stop inside the compound, he is already stepping out before the engine has completely settled into silence. His eyes immediately find mine, as though checking that I am unharmed has become instinctive, but wh

  • Bring Him to His Knees   Built on a lie

The silence after Roan’s last words stretches between us, thick with everything neither of us is willing to say. I keep my hand resting on the closed book, staring at the faded leather cover while my mind races through everything we have just discovered. His family had been given a choice. Protect the last Unbound or surrender her. The words should make me think only about the ancient threat, about the creature that had crossed into Ashborn and called me by a name I had never known belonged to me, yet somehow I am painfully aware of the man standing a few feet away. Roan has not moved since stepping back from me, and that distance feels deliberate. I can almost feel the restraint in him, the effort it takes for him not to reach for me, and somehow that affects me more than if he had. “You knew something about this before I arrived,” I say quietly. He looks at me, and there is no point pretending otherwise. “I knew my family had been involved in something connected to the easte
