Three days had passed and the articles about  our family business were still very much alive and trending on the internet.

We woke up to hungry journalists and bloggers churning the defamatory articles into new stories and spun webs of innuendo about my father each morning.

A massive social media campaign had erupted, demanding that all Moretti industries be closed and my father investigated.

Our mansion which used to be a haven now sat like a time bomb ready to explode. The frustration in the house was palpable.

Dad paced the length of his office like a caged animal.

His usual air of quiet power was fractured, replaced by a raw desperation.

His tailored suit hung loosely on his broad frame ,a stark contrast to his usual impeccable appearance.

Father had always been a man of power and seeing him reduced to this state gnawed at my insides.

“Useless.”,dad roared sending the items on his desk skittering across the room.

    Stan flinched at his tone.

“We will find them boss.Every stone will be overturned.”

“That’s the only thing I have heard for three fucking days Stan. The commissioner is on my neck.He says we have until noon before the official announcement of the investigation goes viral.”dad spat out.

“I need results Stan. And a freaking solution to this mess. This slander is crippling our business. Our rival companies are circling our investors like hyenas. We need to do something.Pay money to anyone.Offer them anything!”

“Do what you must Stan or else we will go down!”

    Stan nodded and left.

    *****************************

I watched the hands of the clock like my life depended on it.

Well at this point it really depended on it.

It was twenty minutes to noon and still there was no sign of Stan.

Father was holed up in his office and his occasional outbursts and sounds of his fists on his desk indicated his presence in the house.

Noise of commotion reached my ears making me stand abruptly from where I was seated.

A guard pushed the door to the living room and stepped in.

    “Where’s the boss?”,he asked.

    “In his office.”,I replied.

    “What is the problem?”

    “He has a visitor.”

Without a glance he made his way to fathers office.

As I made my way back to my seat , the door creaked open to reveal the figure of an old man.

His movements were swift despite the cane he held and I figured he didn’t really need it.

His eyes swept across the room until they settled on me.

They were the most piercing eyes to have ever held my gaze.

Slowly a smile spread on his face.

“ Anya Moretti”,he voiced out my name and it sent chills down my spine.

There was something about the way it fell off his lips and the way his eyes roamed over my body.

“Don Silva!”,my father’s voice rung from the stairs.

We both turned in his direction and father’s face was void of the fury I had seen in the last couple of days.

In its stead was the cold and calculating stare I was used to.

“Salvatore Moretti.” Don Silva greeted, his voice a smooth baritone.

“I apologise for the unorthodox visit.”

I wondered at how he managed to switch voices so effortlessly.

“Nice house and a very beautiful daughter I must say.The rumours didn’t lie.”he said with amusement dripping from his tone.

The hairs on my neck rose as father turned to me.

The air cackled with tension so thick that it felt almost tangible.

“Anya to your room!”,father ordered .

My legs obeyed automatically as I raced to my room.

In my room,I quickly grabbed my phone and searched the name Don Silva.

I gasped in surprise as I read.

I had just survived an encounter with a mafia boss who wasn’t my father.

He was the founder of the Silver Empire ,a rival company of ours and was also alleged to be a mafia don.

What was he doing here then?

Was he here to gloat because of dad’s predicament?, I thought to myself.

There was only one way to find out.

I snuck out of my room to the living room only to meet it empty.

I turned and almost hit my mum in the process.

“Why is Don Silva here?”,mum asked in a panicked voice.

    “I don’t know.Dad sent me out before

I could find out.”, I replied.

“Listen to your father and stay in your room Anya.”

“Okay “,I replied and headed back to my room unable to shake off the panic in mother’s voice.

A knock sounded on my door startling me.

“Miss Moretti, your dad wants you at the table for dinner.”,Varya our housekeeper said.

    “Dinner?”,I asked puzzled.

“Yes miss. You slept through lunch.”,she responded.

“Thanks Varya.I’ll be down in a minute.”

    “Shit!”,I cursed.

I missed the afternoon news bulletin that was going to determine our fate.

There was no time to find out from my phone.

I knew better than to keep father at the table when he had sent for me.

Brushing a comb through my ruffled hair I made my way down stairs to the table.

    “Anya ,sit!”,dad clipped.

An odd feeling settled in my chest as I sat across my mother, beside my brother.

“Hey.”,I whispered trying to get him to say something.

He didn’t respond and continued to pick at his food.

Something was off with the way mother avoided my eyes as she served my plate.

And dad kept staring at me as if he was on the verge of saying something but never did.

Dinner continued quietly at the table till Varya picked up the last dish.

I waited for dad to excuse me so I could find out what the news bulletin had said about the investigation.

Dad cleared his throat. “We need to talk to you.”

    “Okay.”, I said slowly.

    “You are getting married.”

I gasped in surprise. Given the situation at hand I wondered why dad was announcing my marriage.I didn’t know a search for suitors for me had even started.

Dad had other pressing matters to focus on and my marriage was definitely not a solution to any one of them.

    Unless it had to be……

I stared at my father as the realisation hit me.

  • Broken SilverCode   A Mole

CHAPTER 23KIAN'S POV My eyes squeezed tightly as a stream of sunlight made its way to the bedside, making me groan in frustration as my body still throbbed from yesterday's fight. However, just as I was about to turn over to the other side, my eyes caught a glimpse of something standing out in the corner of the room.A movement.A shadow. But shadows didn't have eyes staring back at you.“What the fuck—who’s there?” I exclaimed and immediately reached out for the gun laying still on my nightstand and pointed it mercilessly at the seated figure opposite my bed, the sleep in my eyes was gone and now replaced with anger. The shadow cursed under his breath—a familiar slur sticking out—and shook his head, interlocking his fingers together as though the gun in my hands meant nothing to him.My brows furrowed as I squinted my eyes at the invader’s, watching as he leaned closer, his face slowly came into full view, “Slept well?”“Jesus, it's just you!” I exhaled sharply and sat upright with

CHAPTER 22ANYA “I think someone's following us…” I whispered, my voice small and cracked with emotion as my eyes glued to the two tinted cars that'd been behind for the past ten minutes now.“Shit. Don't worry about it, nothing will happen…I promise. Just…breathe for me.” His hands squeezed tightly on the steering wheel before he briefly glanced down to check up on me.“I'm sorry…” I sniffed, looking at him with watery eyes. “I…I didn't know….I didn't know that they—”“It's okay, it wasn't your fault. I'm not mad at you.” He said, flashing me an assuring smile as he cupped the side of my cheeks. “I'll fix this, okay? No one will hurt you—”“No! Look out!”SLAM.A blinding pain stabbed through my chest, forcing me to scream and thrash around as the air in my lungs was sucked out of me in an instant, blood trickling down my forehead as my vision turned into a double and a triple.I couldn't see properly but I could feel their hands, feel their mocking breaths on my neck as one of them

  • Broken SilverCode   Chapter 21

KIAN“Do you think she's breathing?” Darryl asked, his tone cautious as I caught him staring at Anya with curiosity.“Why? You think I'll be carrying a dead body and I won't know by now?” I gritted through my teeth and sucked up the sudden tightness brewing up at my chest. She won't fucking dare to die on me like this. Not after causing so much trouble and leaving me to fix it all by myself. But what if she's dying? Cassio did stab something into her—like an EpiPen of some sort.Never seen that kind before though…I wish I'd taken a closer look.Following my instincts, I immediately tilted her neck to my access, clenching my jaw at the faint pink marks glaring back at me, noticing how they matched the other bruises on her wrists and ankles. That fucking bastard of a brother…no he's NOT my brother to begin with, never will be.I should've killed him back then, instead of having him banished from the Silvers. Not only is he a threat to me, he's a threat to everything I touch and own now.

  • Broken SilverCode    The Antidote

CHAPTER 20KIAN“Kian!” Darryl exclaimed to warn me but I was too pissed now to care anymore.I lunged for his neck immediately, successfully catching him off guard and slashed his left leg, making him groan in pain, but just when I was about to go for his face, a quick blow neutralised my action, sending me backwards.“You've got some nerves, dear brother.” He spat out, his usual playful demeanor was now gone, and his real colours were now exposed.“Don't you dare fucking call me that, or I'll rip out your fucking tongue.” I warned, my blade still dripping with his blood and I glared at his scoffing figure. “You fucking lost privileges to that title.”“How touchè, I’m only here to pass a message to you and your little wife.” He smirked. “Seems like your wife has already taken a liking to me given that she just got into a deal with me.”Don't listen to him, Kian. You know how fucking psycho he is, he's always getting into people's heads.“Fuck you and your deals.” I snapped and threw

  • Broken SilverCode   Chapter 19

Surrender ANYA“What did you do with my brother?” I gritted through my teeth, struggling to break free from the chair he'd taped me to.The “friend” of Kian turned to me, a slashed brow cocked lazily, “Do you really value his life or yours? I mean, you're in the shittiest position yet, and you're thinking of someone else. How honorable.”“I did what you said, so answer me.” I spat out, glaring back at him in the eyes despite how scared I was deep down, how vulnerable I was with his henchman putting some damn syringe to my neck as a threat. The man gave a scoff and rubbed his chin. “What if I said he was doing just fine, doing just perfect, better than he'd ever been, would you believe me?”My brows knitted into a confused frown, but seeing the slow smirk on the corner of his lips, I realized that I was being played and stood my ground with a sneer. “No, I wouldn't. I know the mafia too damn well to believe one bullshit you're saying. I don't even believe you're a friend to Kian. Is h

  • Broken SilverCode   Chapter 18

KIAN An awkward silence hung over the table we were all seated at. Darryl was at my side, probably praying deep down in his mind for this to quickly come to an end, considering that his eyes had been glued to his phone the entire minutes we'd been here.As for me, my fingers drummed against the smooth surface before me, quietly counting the numbers thirty backwards to calm down my nerves, and when it finally hit zero, I struck the last drumming a little louder than the usual rhythm, drawing all four pairs of eyes towards my direction.“So, no one's going to seriously talk about how the fuck I'm suddenly having a wedding tomorrow?”Grandfather flashed me an immediate glare from his high seat, but I was too angry to care this time. My whole future was being bargained on a fucking table here.“Mr. Moretti.” My grandfather called out, making me refocus my glare to the man who'd been suspiciously quiet for the past twenty minutes now—almost as if he was on the edge for making something g
