Murielle's POV

By dawn I had a rope of paper across Fenwick's long table, and every knot in it was a date.

I had not gone to bed after Ruth's last page. Colette's open left hand stayed in my head the whole night, and the strips were what my hands did instead of shaking. I had cut them myself from the margins of spoiled sheets, one date to a strip, and pinned them in order with the brass weights from his drawer.

The first read Ashwell drawer opened. Five days along came Colette leaves Marl End,

Murielle's POV For several seconds nobody spoke, and the lamp hissed so loudly in the quiet that I wanted to put it out."Six years," I said at last, my voice thin with disbelief. "You are certain of that.""I carried the foot of his coffin, my lady." The keeper wiped his damp palms down his coat, miserable and steady in the same breath. "I was there when they lowered him."I read the entry again. Three weeks ago a request had gone in to see the very page we had spent the morning bent over, and it had been approved under the name of a man who had been dead for six years."Then who signed it?" I demanded of Vesper, and I heard how raw I sounded."That is what we have to establish," she said evenly, drawing a clean sheet toward her."A dead man's name was used to look at the same entry we are looking at. That has to mean it matters," I argued, heat rising in my face."It tells us his name was used, Murielle. It doe

Murielle's POV "So it was signed almost as soon as you were out of the door," I said to Vesper, and my voice came out tighter than I liked."It appears so," Vesper answered, coming closer. "We do not yet know who asked for it, or why.""I know." I hated how often those two words had become necessary.Cassian stepped up beside my chair. "My seal opened that book for reading," he said, low and careful, looking at the order in my hand. "I can stop this recall until your examination is finished."I knew he could. One word from him and the clerk would forget how to walk, and for one brief, shameful moment I wanted him to say it.Then I remembered Dray, and how quickly the Council turned on every piece of evidence that had passed through the King's hands."No," I said, flatly, before I could talk myself out of it.Cassian's eyes came back to my face. "Murielle, we have witnesses.""And Dray has spent weeks finding reasons to doubt them. If you stop it, they will say you kept the register b

Murielle's POVThe keeper did not like the lamp.I noticed it because I had nothing else I could bear to look at. When Fenwick lowered the flame against the page and the mark rose out of the paper, the keeper's thumb jerked off the leather as if it had burned him, and now he stood with that hand tucked inside his other sleeve, watching the flame instead of the book.I did not trust the flinch. A man might shy from a seal because he had pressed it, or because he had once been punished for mishandling it, or because his hands were cold, and I had spent three years learning what it costs when a verdict is built out of a look."Describe exactly what you see," Vesper said, lifting her pen. "Nothing you suspect and nothing you think it means, only what is on the page.""A margin note beside the entry for the nineteenth day after Colette arrived," the keeper said, leaning forward without touching the paper and pausing to swallow. "The authority column has no ink, but there is an impression p

Murielle's POVNobody moved while the number settled over the table."Written, but not proven written then," Vesper said, her pen scratching. "The sheet is dated twelve days before the leak, and I will note that the date is what the page says. If the date was added later, the ink and the folding will say so.""Fenwick," I said, not trusting myself with more than his name."Already looked," he answered, steady beside me. "Same ink as the sheets on either side, same fold, same wear along the edge. That tells us the page is old, not when the words went on it. I will lay these beside the packets from Colm's route as well, hand against hand, before anyone calls them the same."Vesper stopped writing. When she looked up her face was grave."This sheet sits in the lineage drawer, under the lineage seal," she said. "Using it in the treason matter joins two strands the Council has kept apart. They must rule on that before we lean on it.""Then I'll ask them," I said flatly. "I will not use it

Murielle's POVI did not breathe again until Vesper spoke."Read it aloud," Vesper said quietly, her pen lifted. "Every word, and the date first."I counted against the strips before I trusted my mouth. The eighteenth day after Colette reached Silver Moon."It is unsigned, in the same upright hand," I said. "A column of times down the left."Second bell. M.R. up before the household. Walked the east wall alone. Returned by the kitchen door.Fourth hour. M.R. and D. at the stable gate a quarter hour. She left first. He stayed.Second hour past noon. M.R. entered the east study alone. Opened the second drawer, where the strongroom keys are kept. Remained a quarter hour. Left carrying papers.Subject has the run of the house and is not watched at the doors. She has had sight of the muster plans.Marrow's pen stopped scratching, and the lamp hissed loud in the silence.D. was Dorian. I would think about that later.I did not need to count anything to know the study afternoon. I knew it th

Five days along came Colette leaves Marl End, and four days after that, Colette reaches Silver Moon. Between the first two I had tucked a short strip on its side, The man at the Alders' door, because Ruth's letter could not tell me which day he knocked.Left of the first strip, apart from the rest, I had pinned a loose one, Colm's reports begin, because Colm had sworn the earliest pages were written months before the leak. Past Silver Moon the strips ran on through the month Ruth's letter had never touched. At the far end, thirty-nine days
