His words continued to echo in my head after he left.

Our life is easy.

What the hell did that mean? His life was easy. Mine was a tangled mess he kept pulling tighter. He is making my life shiter by the day.

Instead of standing there beating myself up about it, my feet started moving before my brain caught up. I jogged out of the class and down the hallway. The only thing that could be heard was my sneakers squeaking on the linoleum. I saw his back just as he reached for the door to the boy’s locker room.

“Noah!”

He stopped with his hand dropping from the handle. He turned slowly with a bored expression already sliding into place. But his eyes were still intense.

“What? Finally realized the truth?”

I stopped a few feet from him as my chest heaving.

“I just wanted to ask what you meant? What did you mean ‘Our life’? What does ‘the sooner I know the better for me’ even mean? It’s clear it’s only your life that’s easy.”

He let out a deep sigh. He took a step toward me, closing the d

I didn’t even care that Noah was in the room with me. I started pulling at my school shirt, and I started to unbutton it.Noah’s eyes widened, and his eyes fell to my chest. “What are you doing? Have you lost your mind?”“Of course not, It’s the only way,” I shot back. My voice was trembling with a mix of fury and desperation. “My mom won’t talk. Everything is making me lose my mind. I need to know, it’s for the best for both of us… And David is the only one who has the answers, and I can… press him.”“You don’t know my dad like I do!” Noah’s voice was low and urgent. His hand closed around my wrist to stop me. “He doesn’t get ‘pressed,’ Rosalie. He gets angry, and then presses you. He’s literally the one that does the pressing. This is a terrible idea.”“Well, I’m out of ideas, Noah! My life is blowing up and everyone is just whispering and lying! I need to know! We need to know.” I yanked my wrist free, and I resumed unbuttoning my shirt.“Yeah but my dad is not going to spill if h

We walked to the car in a silence that felt heavier than before. The brief moment of Noah crashing down in the hallway had evaporated, and been replaced with something even more dreadful. It was the grim reality of where we were headed. Noah’s keys jangled in his shaking hand.I stopped by the passenger door. “Can you even drive right now?”He let out a short, hollow breath. “I’m shattered, not drunk. I can drive.” He looked at me, and a flicker of something soft in his tormented eyes met me. “It’s nice that you’re worried about me, though.”I scoffed, sliding into the seat. “Don’t flatter yourself. I just want to get home in one piece.” Even if my life is waiting there to crush me into a million pieces… it’s all too much.A laugh escaped his throat. Noah started the car, and the familiar purr of the engine did nothing to calm the storm inside me. I stayed to visualize what I was going to paint. As Noah continued to drive, I caught him stealing a few glances at my direction. After a

  • Bullied by my Stepbrother    111; Memories from the lake.

Noah’s POVThe word “lake” hit me like a physical blow, knocking the air from my lungs.I froze, and the school hallway began to tilt around me. I couldn’t go back there. Not after… not after everything. The memories I’d spent a lot of effort burying, the ghost I kept chained in the deepest part of my mind, broke free and came crashing down. The memory started to hit me brick by brick. The leaves were cold beneath my knees. Rina’s head lolled in my lap, and her skin was pale under the moonlight.“Liam … Liam … Fucking Liam …” she muttered. The words were slurred and desperate.I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t think straight. Couldn’t fucking breathe. Her eyes rolled back, and her body went limp. Vomit and foam spilled from her lips as she convulsed. She was dying. Right there. In my hands. My CPR was useless. I didn’t know what I was doing, but I knew I tried my best. By the time I stopped pushing on her chest, she was long gone. I was alone in the night with a girl who was dead…

The car ride back to school was buried in a thick and heavy silence. I just stared at the window, then stole a glance at Noah. His knuckles were white on the steering wheel, and his jaw so tight I thought I could hear his teeth grinding. It seems like he was losing it. But he didn’t want to say anything about it. The only thing that broke the silence was the ragged sound of my own breathing. When we got back to school, he never left my side. He continued to follow me everywhere even if I wanted to use the bathroom, he would wait outside. I could feel the questions in everyone’s stares, first at my bandaged nose, then at Noah glued to my hip. Well it’s not like they don’t know…After the final bell, we were walking to the art studio for the ball meeting when a figure stepped directly into our path. Nikki.Noah moved instantly, putting himself slightly in front of me. “Whatever you’re selling, we’re not buying. Fuck off.”Nikki let out a sharp smile. For the first time, she didn’t tr

Before I could form a single word, my mom turned and began to walk away. Her heels clicked as she continued to walk fast away from me. I jumped to my feet. My heart was drumming against my chest and my hand began to tremble. I ran after her with my own shoes slapping against the polished floor. “Mom!”She didn’t stop, she just continued to walk faster. There was no doubt she was a woman on a mission to escape.Running from responsibilities. Nothing new.“Mom, stop!” I grabbed her arm, forcing her to turn and face me in the middle of the bright hallway. “Is it true?”Her eyes were wide, and filled with panic. “Rosalie, not here… and definitely not like this.”“Yes, here! And definitely like this! Is that why you keep telling me to leave you alone? You could have just said it. What’s so embarrassing about being pregnant when you’re married.” My voice echoed louder than I meant it to. A few people in the waiting area looked up. “Mom, are you pregnant?”“Keep your voice down!” she his

Monday came too fast. The weekend had passed in a blur of slammed doors and silence. Mom was a ghost in her room. David was gone before the sun came up and back long after it set. When I was ready for school, Noah’s door was still shut and his car was still in the driveway. It looked like he was skipping because I was already late.So I went alone. The second I stepped into the hallway, about a thousand whispers hit my ears. I looked around and saw almost everyone’s eyes on me. They slithered around me, and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes and ignore them. A gossip was definitely spreading around about me.I kept my head down while gripping the strap of my backpack. Then my foot caught on something, and before I could know what was going on, I pitched forward with my books flying in the air. My hands slapped the cold linoleum and I went face first to the ground. A sharp and blinding pain exploded in my nose. The hallway was filled with laughter. A circle of shoes gathered around me a
