Matteo couldn’t sleep.

Not after the black car. Not after watching Leo cough in his sleep, his tiny shoulders shaking like the weight of the world was pressing on them.

He stayed awake on the old mattress in the corner of the room, staring at the cracked ceiling.

Too many thoughts.

Too many risks.

And somewhere in the middle of all of it... Dominic Pendragon.

---

The next day, Matteo showed up to the club on time. Fresh hoodie. Clean sneakers. Eyes heavy from no rest.

He stepped into the hallway, ducking past a bartender hauling crates.

The usual chaos buzzed around him — glass clinking, music warming up, workers moving like ants. But Matteo felt a chill down his spine. Like someone had turned the temperature down just for him.

He didn’t even need to turn to know.

Dominic was watching.

From the private balcony, his sharp eyes tracked Matteo’s every step.

Unblinking. Quiet. Calculating.

Like a man measuring what he was willing to destroy.

  • Burning empire   Chapter40– The Quiet Before the Gun

The estate was quieter than usual.Too quiet.Matteo paced the corridor outside the medical wing, hands in his pockets, eyes flicking toward the heavy double doors every few seconds. The walls here didn’t echo like the rest of the house. Everything was padded, silenced, clinical — like time moved slower where people fought for their lives.Behind those doors, Leo slept.Monitored. Cared for. Safe.At least for now.Two guards stood at each end of the hallway. Silent. Still. Always watching.Matteo was getting used to it — the feeling of being observed like an animal in a cage. But lately, he wasn’t sure who was caging who. Or whether he was the one slipping into the bars willingly.Footsteps approached.Calm. Unhurried. He didn’t have to look to know it was Dominic."How is he?" Dominic asked."Stable," Matteo replied quietly. "Fever’s down. He’s still weak, but they said he should recover fully if he rests."Dominic nodded, hands in the pockets of his slacks."I can have one of the d

The morning sun cut through the blinds in long, sharp lines.Matteo sat on the edge of the guest bed, head in his hands. The soreness from last night’s ambush hadn’t faded. His lip was split. His jaw ached. But that wasn’t what had him trembling. It was the silence from his brother. He’d texted Leo twice. No reply. He’d called.Nothing.Dominic’s guards were already stationed by the doors, like always, armed and alert. Matteo wasn’t sure if they were there to protect him or to watch him. Maybe both.Dominic stepped into the room, hair still damp from a shower, sleeves rolled. He looked like power dressed in calm. But Matteo noticed the faint shadows beneath his eyes."You didn’t sleep again," Dominic said."I tried."Dominic sat across from him. His voice was low."What happened last night won’t happen again."Matteo looked up slowly. "He knew where I’d be.""I know.""Which means someone’s talking."Dominic nodded. "Yes.""Are you going to kill them?"Dominic didn’t blink. "Eventuall

The room was dark except for the faint glow of the security lights outside. Matteo lay on top of the covers, his eyes open, body still. He could hear Dominic’s steady breathing from across the room. It should’ve calmed him.It didn’t.His phone buzzed softly on the side table.Carefully, Matteo sat up, checking to make sure Dominic hadn’t stirred. He hadn’t. The man slept like stone.Matteo picked up the phone.Leo: Still coughing. And the lights went out again. I’m cold.Matteo’s heart twisted. He typed quickly.Matteo: Wrap up. I’ll get you medicine and call you soon. Don’t worry. He didn’t wait.He rose, slid his hoodie over his shirt, and tiptoed to the door.He needed to breathe. Think. And maybe, just for a few minutes, stop being Dominic’s shadow.---The estate was quiet.Guards stood in corners, but none stopped him. Matteo had earned just enough trust—or curiosity—to move freely. He slipped out the back gate, hoodie up, hands stuffed in his pockets. The night was sharp with

  • Burning empire   Chapter 37— Blood in the Water

The morning started quiet.Too quiet.Matteo sat on the edge of the bed in the estate’s top-floor room, tying his shoelaces slowly. The silence outside his door wasn't peaceful—it felt watched. The kind of quiet that came before a sharp knock. Or a bullet. When he stepped into the hallway, two guards nodded at him. One was new. The other…Gold Tooth. He was smiling again. But it didn’t reach his eyes.“Morning, pretty boy,” he said.Matteo gave a stiff nod. “Sir.”Gold Tooth chuckled. “Sir. You hear that?” he said to the other guard. “Kid’s got manners.”Matteo walked past him, trying not to let his steps quicken.---Downstairs, breakfast had already been cleared. Dominic wasn’t there. Not yet.So Matteo waited. An hour passed. He sat in the lounge, fidgeting with the hem of his shirt, eyes flicking to every door. The estate was beautiful—expensive furniture, imported rugs, a piano that hadn’t been touched in years. But it didn’t feel like a home.It felt like a throne room built on

The next morning, Matteo woke up to silence. The apartment Dominic had stashed him in was spotless, sterile, and empty. It didn’t feel like a place for the living. Just a room to hold a secret. He showered quickly, dressed in one of the clean shirts someone had dropped off during the night, and stepped out into the hallway. Two guards stood at the entrance. One nodded. The other didn’t even blink.“You’re to wait here until Mr. Pendragon calls,” the silent one said.Matteo forced a small nod. “Right.”They didn’t offer conversation. They weren’t like Jax. Or Leo. Or even Dominic. They were shadows with guns.---He spent most of the morning pacing. Drinking water. Sitting. Standing again. He stared out the window at the quiet street, watching expensive cars roll past like everything outside was moving on without him.By noon, Dominic arrived.Black coat. Black gloves. Same unreadable stare. Two more guards trailed behind him. One tall and lean, the other shorter, bald, with a gold too

The city returned with noise. After the silence of the forest house, the streets felt louder than usual — sirens in the distance, engines growling, people shouting, life clashing in chaos. But Matteo didn’t hear any of it.He sat quietly in the back of the SUV beside Dominic, wedged between two suited guards. His hoodie felt too tight. His skin too warm. The weight of his silence pressed against his throat. The moment he had sent that message — Give me one more week — something in him had shifted.Like he had sealed a door.No turning back now.And the worst part?He didn’t know if he was doing it for Leo…Or for Dominic.---The convoy pulled up outside one of Pendragon’s warehouses on the south side. It wasn’t one of the flashy ones — no neon lights, no nightlife, no fancy women in velvet dresses. This one was all steel and cement. Quiet. Cold. But guarded. Two men stood at the gate.Four more inside.Dominic stepped out of the car first, his coat flaring like something out of a gan
