“You know it sucks being a freshman again,” Mila said to Emma as they walked through the campus of Washington University for the very first time. Although Emma did not have any classes until 1 pm, she went with Mila at 11 am to explore the campus, hoping to make a friend or two.
“How so?” Emma wondered, looking at Mila for a moment as she adjusted her backpack.
“We were seniors in high school and everybody looked at us like we were on some kind of superior level. Here, we are freshmen again, juniors and seniors look at us like we are fresh meat and they probably laugh at us, sophomores are the only ones who MIGHT have some mercy on us,” Mila explained with a simple shrug.
“Can you just promise me one thing?” Emma asked her best friend quietly. It was a thought that had plagued Emma’s thoughts for a long while and she wanted to give her mind a rest.
“What?” Mila asked her softly with a frown on her face, knowing quite well that Emma was nervous and scared by the tone she used.
“Promise me that we will always be friends...like you won’t forget about me and you’d be here for me if I ever messed up. You can easily make friends and forget about me and I won’t blame you, I mean I know I’m lame and boring and you could easily find someone way better than me...just please don’t abandon me,” Emma has always been scared of the idea of Mila abandoning her.
“Oh Em, I’d never replace you,” Mila cooed, pulling Emma into a gentle hug. “You’re my best friend of eleven years, how can I just forget about you like that? And stop saying you’re lame and boring because you’re not," Mila assured her best friend. “Now, I want you to promise me one thing. I want you to promise me that you’ll make new friends and do your best to get out of your shell, okay?”
“You know it’s not easy for me, but I will do my best, I promise," Emma promised Mila with a small smile on her face.
“That's my bestie!” Mila exclaimed, encouraging her best friend and cheering for her just like she always did.Mila has always been supportive of her best friend no matter what. She knew that Emma needed somebody in her life to be proud of her and cheer for her, so she decided to be that person. She knew that Emma was a great person and she would be very successful even without the help of her parents, but she was not given the chance to be on her own. Her parents were always there to control her, instead of guiding her.
Throughout high school, Mila did her best to try to get Emma out of her shell, so she took her to parties and made her go out as much as possible, but she would always have her eyes on the naïve girl. She did not want her to be the shy girl that people end up taking advantage of. She has already seen people use Emma more than once and she warned her, but Emma did not listen and she would always end up getting hurt one way or another then she would run back to Mila and cry her eyes out for being too stupid to believe that those people really wanted to befriend her.
Mila walked away to her first class, leaving Emma all by herself to explore the new place. Emma took a deep breath and started to walk around the campus, trying to memorise the place as much as possible.
“Excuse me, where is lecture room 320?” Emma asked a girl with dyed red hair.
“The next floor, it should be on the right,” the girl answered Emma, “are you new here?”
“Yeah, my first day and I thought I should explore the place for a bit before my first lecture,” Emma smiled at the girl in front of her.
“That's why you came early? I’m Ariana by the way, you can call me Ari for short.”
“I’m Emma and yeah I came early to explore and also my best friend had an early lecture and I didn’t want to stay home alone,” Emma told Ariana.
“You share a dorm with your best friend? That’s great!” Ariana exclaimed.
“We share an apartment, not a dorm, but it is still great to live with your best friend!”
“We must talk again, here is my number. Message me. I have to go now, bye!” Ariana said and handed Emma a piece of paper that had her number on it.Emma was ecstatic that she almost made one friend on her first day. She knew that Mila would be proud of her. Maybe college was not bad after all, maybe she was going to be a whole new person in college.
“You waited for me? Aren’t you the best!?” Mila grinned, walking over to Emma with a girl by her side. She has just finished her lecture. “Emma, this is Julie, Julie this is Emma, my best friend, actually childhood best friend,” Mila introduced them to each other.
“Nice to meet you, Emma, I’ve heard a lot about you during the past three hours,” Julie told Emma, who smiled at her.
“Cause she is the best! Can’t believe I don’t have any lectures with her,” Mila said dramatically with a fake pout as she threw her arms over Emma.“She is not usually that weird, I can assure you,” Emma told Julie, giggling a bit, making Mila slap her arm playfully.
“Oh don’t worry, if you think she is weird, wait till you see me,” Julie laughed.“Did you meet anyone?” Mila asked Emma. Hope was obvious in her eyes.
“I actually did! Her name is Ariana and she gave me her number, I’m supposed to message her,” Emma said with a wide smile on her face.
“I’m so proud of you! That’s my bestie!” Mila exclaimed, happiness obvious in her voice.
“Calm down! I did not win the Olympics,” Emma rolled her eyes.
“Way to kill the mood, Adams,” Mila muttered.“Are you two always like this?” Julie asked, raising an eyebrow.
“90% of the time,” Mila answered with a cheeky smile.
“You were so different in class,” Julie told Mila.
“Yeah, she is like Hannah Montana, double life,” Emma smirked at Mila, knowing how much she hated Hannah Montana.
“You’re sooooo going to get it when we get home,” Mila playfully threatened Emma.“I really need to go now, I will call you, Mila,” Julie said, giggling a little before leaving.
“She seems nice,” Emma told Mila as they both walked to the car.
“She is,” Mila agreed. “I’m so hungry, I can’t wait to get home.”
“Same here, Mil, same here,” Emma mumbled tiredly. One thing they both agreed on: college was exhausting as hell.
“Just message her, Em,” Mila whined. She has been trying to convince Emma to text Ariana for the past half an hour, but Emma was too scared and shy to do it.“What if she doesn’t want to talk to me again?” Emma murmured, looking down. Her social anxiety kicked in. “She wouldn’t have given you her number if she didn’t want you to message her!”“I don’t know...Mil, look you’re more than enough for me and I don’t want any more friends,” Emma said quietly. Mila sighed heavily and snatched the phone from her best friend’s hands.“What are you doing!?” Emma squealed and tried to get her phone back from Mila.“If you’re not going to do it then I’ll do it!”“No no no no! Please don’t!” Emma begged her.“No, Em, I will do it, end of discussion,” Mila said and messaged Ariana quickly.
The weekend came faster than expected and soon enough it was Friday. Emma was in her room getting ready. She was nervous and excited at the same time. She has gone to parties before, but she has never gone to a party without Mila.Emma put on a floral high-waisted skirt and styled it with a tight off-the-shoulder powder pink top. Her outfit was not showy, it was cute and nice. She applied some light make-up and put on pink lipstick that matched her outfit.Ariana told Emma that she would pick her up. By 8:30 Ariana messaged Emma and told her that she was waiting for her.“You live in a very nice neighbourhood, how do you manage to pay the rent girl?” Ariana asked Emma as she drove off to the party.“It’s not rented...my parents bought it for me,” Emma said quietly. She was not fond of telling people that the place was actually hers, but she did not see any point of lying and denying the truth.“Oh wow! You’re
When Emma walked inside the apartment she frowned and sighed heavily. She found Mila asleep on the couch, her head resting on its arm. She picked her phone from her purse and checked the messages; the last message Mila sent was around five in the morning and it was eight by the time she arrived.Emma walked towards Mila and gently shook her body. The tired sleepy girl opened her eyes slowly. On seeing Emma in front of her, Mila quickly jumped up from her position.“I’m so sorry! I was so drunk last night to message you and I only checked the messages this morning,” Emma said, worry was obvious in her voice. She felt guilty for making Mila that anxious.“Drunk? Since when do you like drinking?” Mila’s confusion was written all over her face. She knew quite well that Emma did not like drinking; not one bit.“I just wanted to try something new, it didn’t taste that bad,” Emma shrugged.Just one
It was Sunday and it was a lazy day for both of Mila and Emma. Mila finished all of her college assignments on Friday and Emma finished everything she was supposed to do on her weekdays since she had nothing else to do."Julie is coming over," Mila informed Emma as she drank her coffee."And Ariana too," Emma told Mila, checking her Instagram out of pure boredom."Great." Mila smiled and sat on the couch beside her.Mila was texting Julie a lot and she had a lot of classes with her. Julie was a nice girl and she was a lot like Mila, so she was comfortable with her and she did not feel pressured with the friendship she developed with her.Emma was also building a growing friendship with Ariana and she liked the friendship they were having. She loved how Ariana was making her experience new things. Mila was a little uncertain about Emma's friendship with Ariana and was concerned about how Ariana was pulling Emma into a whole new life, yet she kept he
"I honestly don't like her at all," Julie spoke as she sat beside Mila. The professor had not come yet to the lecture, so the girls used the opportunity to chitchat."Same, I don't know what Emma sees in her, this troubles me." Mila sighed, opening her notebook and writing the date."Are you still going to the party?" Julie asked her."Only to keep my eyes on Emma.""I don't know if I should come or not." Julie thought out loud."Come, I don't want to be alone at that party, I know Emma would be busy with her new friends.""I will think about it," Julie told Mila, earning a nod from her."I want you to meet Leila and Hannah. We share a flat together," Julie said with a smile on her face."Sounds good to me. I have a shift today from 4 to 10, if they are free after we finish our lectures today then we can meet," Mila suggested."Sounds like a plan," Julie agreed. After two lectures, Julie and Mila went to meet the
"Are you sure you want to come? You know I will be fine on my own," Emma told Mila, giving her a skeptical look. "Did Ariana tell you not to bring me? Too bad for her if she did because I'm going," Mila said the first part teasingly; however, she was serious about the second part. She did not want to leave Emma alone at that party; she had a bad feeling about it."She did not say anything else, we haven't really talked about you." Emma shrugged as she applied some lipstick. Emma was lying, Ariana would always make fun of Mila."Julie is coming, so I will most probably be with her all the time, and I'm sure you'll be with Cole, Ariana, and your new friends," Mila said, applying more mascara."That's not true." Emma frowned as her stomach twisted in guilt. "We will spend time together.""And even if we don't, it's okay. You're supposed to have new friends, I'm just worried about the kind of people you hang out with," Mila spoke. Ever since they starte
The next morning, Emma woke up around noon with a killer headache. She winced as she got out of bed. She walked slowly to the bathroom and took a hot shower, hoping it would ease her headache and relax her exhausted body.Once she was done she dried herself and put on clean clothes then went back to her room. Emma could not remember anything at all from the night before and that was annoying her. The more she pushed herself to remember, the more the pounding in her head intensified. When she was done brushing her hair and applying deodorant and body lotion she walked out of her room."Mil," she called out as she walked to the kitchen. Emma was a little surprised when she found Julie in front of her instead of Mila. She did not recall Julie staying the night with them, but she also failed to recall any other event."Good morning Julie, where is Mila?" she asked her, opening the fridge."Morning, I bet you have a strong headache, here." Julie handed her Ibupr
"Is this Emma? We've heard a lot about you," Leila hollered, gaining the attention of everyone around them. Leila, Julie, and Hannah were at the restaurant, sitting in a booth and they were soon joined by Emma and Mila."My death wish would probably be to see you quiet for an hour." Julie rolled her eyes at Leila."Hey," Emma said, smiling at the three girls in front of her then sat down and so did Mila."You already know Julie, I'm Leila and this is Hannah," Leila introduced herself and Hannah."You really look like princess Merida," Emma told Leila."I know, right? I've been told that a lot! Even Mila told me that the first time she saw me.""You two made up?" Julie whispered to Mila while Emma was engaging with the other two girls."We haven't talked about it yet... I honestly don't want to talk about it. I think I might ignore the whole thing," Mila told Julie quietly.Mila took a glance at Emma and saw her talking to Hannah
