The red light spread fast, tracing lines through the ancient stone floor in a pattern that stretched beneath every row of benches, beneath the dais itself, beneath the entire chamber like something that had been waiting, patient and dormant, for exactly this many marked bloodlines to gather in one place.

"Now," Rian said, voice cracking with urgency. "It has to be now, before it fully completes."

Kael grabbed my hand, and across the aisle I saw Vivienne reaching for Elara, saw Silas pushing him

"What actually happened," I asked, dread coiling tight in my chest. "To the bloodline that failed two centuries ago."The Keeper's expression carried a weight that told me the answer wasn't going to be simple. "The trial tests three qualities, historically, through three distinct challenges. Strength, though not in the way you might expect, judgment, and restraint. The bloodline that failed did so on the final challenge, restraint, when the wolf undertaking the trial chose violence in a moment specifically designed to tempt exactly that choice." She paused. "The treaty's terms shifted afterward to reflect that failure, tightening considerably, adding restrictions that hadn't existed before. Your bloodline's current situation is, in part, a consequence of choices made by someone else, centuries before you were born.""That's not comforting," Kael said grimly."It's not meant to be," the Keeper said. "I'd be doing you a disservice if I let you walk into this believing it carries no genu

  • CAGED BY THE LYON   Chapter 69: Eleven Days

Kael was waiting the second I stepped out of the warehouse, pulling me into his arms before I'd even fully cleared the doorway, relief and barely restrained fury both radiating off him in equal measure."You're okay," he said, checking me over frantically despite everything. "I felt every minute of that pass like an hour.""I'm okay," I said, though the words came out heavier than I intended, the weight of everything Vesper had told me still settling uncomfortably across my chest. We regrouped back at Dorian's apartment, everyone gathering close as I relayed the conversation as carefully as I could, the treaty, the True Convergence's actual purpose, the eleven-day deadline hanging over all of it like a blade none of us had quite decided how to face yet."She wants to alter what your children could become," Kael said slowly, disbelief and anger both warring in his voice. "Before they're even born. That's not protection. That's exactly the kind of control the Conclave's always specializ

"What promise," I asked, dread and curiosity tangled together as I studied the woman standing calm and unhurried in the dim warehouse light."Centuries ago, before the Conclave existed in anything resembling its current form, there were two founding bloodlines," Vesper said. "Mine, and yours. Both carrying strength that traced back to the same source you've already discovered beneath the founding grounds. Both understanding, even then, how dangerous that strength could become if it wasn't managed carefully.""Managed by who," I asked."That was precisely the disagreement that split us," Vesper said. "My bloodline believed strength required strict oversight, control, a structure to prevent it from ever concentrating dangerously in careless or ambitious hands. Yours believed strength should remain free, chosen, earned rather than regulated." She paused, something old and weary crossing her expression. "We reached an agreement, eventually. A treaty, sealed in blood, promising that if eit

  • CAGED BY THE LYON   Chapter 67: Come Alone

"Absolutely not," Kael said the instant he read the message over my shoulder, voice sharp with immediate, protective fury. "You're not walking into an unknown location alone based on a message from someone who's spent weeks manipulating everyone around us from the shadows.""I don't think I have much of a choice," I said, though my own voice shook more than I wanted it to. "If this is really the person behind the True Convergence, ignoring them doesn't make the threat disappear. It just means we're reacting to whatever they do next instead of learning what we can now.""There's a difference between learning what we can and walking directly into a trap," Rowan said, already pulling up whatever information he could find on the address included in the message. "This location's isolated. Industrial district, mostly abandoned buildings, minimal witnesses, minimal easy escape routes if something goes wrong.""Which is exactly why we do this carefully instead of not at all," I said. "Tracker

"You need to give me everything," Rowan said, already pulling out his equipment, careful urgency replacing the earlier tension in his posture. "Every call log, every message, every detail about how they first reached you, even if it seems insignificant. If there's any way to trace back to whoever's actually behind this voice, it starts with what you can give us."Dorian nodded, exhausted but resolved, and spent the next hour walking Rowan through everything he could remember, dates, times, the careful, untraceable methods the voice had always insisted on using, small details that felt insignificant individually but might, pieced together, offer something useful.I sat through most of it in tense silence, Kael's arm steady around my shoulders, processing everything Dorian had revealed, grief and understanding and lingering hurt all tangled together into something I hadn't fully worked through yet."You should have trusted me," I said finally, quiet, once Rowan had moved into another ro

I don't remember the drive to Dorian's apartment. I remember Kael's hand steady on my knee the entire way, grounding me against a panic I couldn't fully name, betrayal and disbelief and desperate hope all tangled together into something that made it hard to breathe properly. He opened the door before we even knocked, and the moment I saw his face, pale and already resigned, I understood, with a sinking certainty, that whatever explanation waited for us wasn't going to be simple."You already know," I said, the words coming out flatter than I intended."I felt it the moment Rowan's trace would have found the pattern," Dorian said quietly, stepping back to let us in. "I've been waiting for this conversation since the moment I sent that first message."My chest tightened, betrayal sharpening into something closer to physical pain. "You sent it. You're the one who's been coordinating against us this entire time.""Not against you," Dorian said quickly, desperately. "Never against you, Mir
