THE THIRD ATTEMPT

~CÉSAR POV~

The call came at three in the morning while I was lying awake in the guest room listening to the house settle, my phone vibrating on the nightstand with Iñigo's name lit up on the screen.

I answered before the second ring.

"Talk."

"We intercepted another team," Iñigo said, his voice tight. "Four men. Diaz cartel. They had the house layout, schedules, photos of Anya and Marcello. They were planning to move tomorrow night during the school run."

My blood went cold.

THE HOMECOMING~ANYA POV~The drive from Marbella to Mijas took less than an hour but felt like crossing between two different worlds, the polished wealth of the coast giving way to whitewashed villages clinging to hillsides, narrow streets barely wide enough for our armored SUV, and with every kilometer closer to my childhood home. I felt myself becoming smaller, younger, the version of myself that existed before César Navarro saw me at that alley and decided I was his.Marcello was pressed against the window watching the landscape change, pointing out things that caught his attention...a donkey in a field, colorful flowers spilling from balconies, old men playing cards in the shade...and César sat beside me with his hand on my thigh, silent but present, while two more SUVs followed behind us carrying enough security to invade a small country."That's excessive," I had said when I saw the convoy forming."That's necessary," César had corrected. "Your family lives in the open. No wal

THE RETURN~ANYA POV~I knew we were getting close when the landscape started looking familiar in ways that made my stomach turn, olive groves giving way to manicured estates. The Mediterranean glittered in the distance like broken glass, and every kilometer closer to Marbella felt like traveling backward through time to a version of myself I had tried desperately to bury.Marcello was asleep in his car seat, his head leaning at an angle that would give him a crick in his neck, completely unaware that we were driving toward the place where his mother had been broken piece by piece.César was quiet in the seat next to me, his hand resting on my thigh in a gesture that was probably meant to be comforting but just made me more aware of how tense I was, how my entire body had gone stiff the moment we had crossed into Andalusia."We can turn around," he said quietly, the first words either of us had spoken in an hour. "If this is too much, we can go back to Paris. I will make an excuse to

THE FAMILY~ANYA POV~Lucrecia showed up the next morning unannounced, stepping out of a black town car at ten AM like she owned the street, wearing a dove grey suit that probably cost more than my monthly expenses used to be.And I watched through the window as César went to greet his mother with the kind of warmth I rarely saw from him.I was still sore from last night.I could still feel César between my legs.I could still hear myself saying "yours" like it was a prayer instead of a surrender. And now his mother was here. The woman who had threatened to keep me in a coma. The woman who had made it clear four years ago that I was disposable as long as the baby survived.I smoothed down my dress and tried to prepare myself for whatever fresh hell this visit would bring."Anya, querida," Lucrecia said when she entered, her smile warm and terrifying. "You look radiant. Motherhood suits you."The mockery of her calling me radiant when she had once threatened to turn me into a sedated i

"Four men. Diaz cartel. They had the house layout, schedules, photos of Anya and Marcello. They were planning to move tomorrow night during the school run."My blood went cold."Where are they now?""Dead," Iñigo said. "All four. But César, this is the third attempt in six months. They're not stopping. They're getting closer each time. Better intel. Better timing. Eventually one of these teams is going to get lucky."I was already out of bed, already pulling on clothes."I'm coming to the site. Don't move the bodies yet.""Patrón....""I want to see them," I interrupted. "I want to see the faces of the men who thought they could take my family."I ended the call and sto

THE QUESTION~CÉSAR POV~Marcello asked the question on a Thursday evening while I was helping him build a tower out of blocks that was already taller than he was, his small hands carefully placing each piece while his tongue stuck out slightly in concentration the way it always did when he was focused."Papa, why does Mama sleep alone?"The question was innocent, simple, the kind of thing any three-year-old would ask when he noticed his parents going to separate rooms at night, but it landed in the quiet living room like a grenade.I looked up at Anya who was curled in the armchair by the window with a book she had been staring at for the last twenty minutes without turning a page.I watched her freeze, watched the tension lock into her shoulders, watched her search for an answer that would satisfy our son without revealing the complicated truth."Because Mama likes her own space," she said carefully, not looking at me."But you love each other, right?" Marcello asked, and the innoce

THE ADMISSION~ANYA POV~Dr. Moreau's office felt smaller than usual, the walls closing in while I sat in the chair with my back to the wall and my hands twisted in my lap.I hadn't spoken for the first ten minutes of the session because I didn't know how to say out loud what had happened, what I had done, what I had let him do to me in the hallway three days ago."You're quieter than usual," Dr. Moreau observed gently. "Do you want to talk about what's on your mind?""I slept with him," I said, the words tumbling out before I could stop them. "With César. Against the wall in our hallway while our son was in the next room."Dr. Moreau didn't look shocked or disgusted, just nodded like I had confirmed something she had already suspected."How do you feel about that?""I don't know," I said, which was a lie. "Confused. Angry at myself. Scared.""Scared of what?""That it's happening again," I said, my voice breaking slightly. "That I'm falling back into the same trap I fell into in Mar

THE TODDLER~ANYA POV~If you had told the twenty-year-old version of me—the one shivering in a silk wedding dress—that I would eventually find peace in a drafty attic smelling of lemon bleach and cheap diapers, I would have called you crazy. But here I am. Fifteen months of hiding. Fifteen months

THE EVACUATION~ANYA POV~I haven't slept. Honestly, I don't think I even blinked.I spent the entire night sitting on the floor by the window, the cold terracotta tiles bleeding into my skin. I kept the lights off because I didn't want to be a target. I just sat there, hugging a kitchen knife in

THE SLIP~ANYA POV~They say silence is golden, but they're wrong. Silence is a slow-growing poison. After two years of it—two years of being Maria, two years of whispering in the dark—the silence in my chest finally felt like it was going to shatter my ribs.I couldn't take it anymore. I needed t

THE CALL HOME~ANYA POV~The payphone smelled like piss and old cigarettes.I was three districts away from Beatriz's apartment, standing in a sketchy corner near the Santa Apolónia train station.
