Hamida: “Don’t tell me sorry. Give me noodles, or shawarma, or cakes, or money.” She nodded her head like a child seeking a reward.

Me: “Mmm, interesting. Talking about cakes, baby there are also cakes in the bag. Mind sharing with your baby friend?”

Hamida: “I’m not a baby. I’m a big girl. I just want cake.”

Ann: “Yeah, Hamida is actually a year older than me. She’s 21, and I’m just 20.”

Hamida: “Yes, yes, yes. Give me the cake.”

Ann: “But you know you need to stop acting babyish, right? Or some people will think you’re not okay?”

Hamida: “But you know I’m fine. It’s okay if you find me embarrassing.” She walked out of the sitting room.

Ann: “Baby, I’m sorry! Come and have some cake.”

Hamida: “I don’t want any.”

Ann: “Oh my God, this chocolate one is so nice. Baby, do you want some?”

Hamida: “Leave me alone.”

Ann: “It’s just one more left and even if you come back, you won’t get it because this is the last batch.”

Hamida: (Comes back to the sitting room with a sad face)

Ann: “I’m sorry, baby. Here it is. You’ll love it. There are other flavors inside, too. You can choose.”

Hamida: (Snatches the bag and sits down) “Thanks.”

Ann: “Stop sulking. You’re going to make me sad.” She turned to me. “Please help me talk to her.”

Me: “Hamida, don’t mind Ann. I’ll buy you plenty of chocolate cakes next time, and a carton of noodles, okay?”

Hamida: (Looks up with wide eyes) “Pinky promise?”

Me: “Yeah, pinky promise.”

Ann: “Do you forgive me now?”

Hamida: “Yes, yes, yes, I forgive you.” She hugged Ann, then paused. “Wait, I saw something online recently about you snatching someone’s boyfriend. What’s that about?”

Ann: “Well, it’s about Nath’s childhood friend. They used to live in the same city before she relocated. I think she’s had a crush on him for a long time. She came back recently, heard about us, and isn’t happy.”

Hamida: “Wait… so she was the one who… Okay, no, no, no. I don’t want to think about it. That girl is evil. How could she? Does she know the impact it would have on you? The emotional abuse? The trauma? Thank God you’re strong. So what happened next? Has she confronted you directly?”

Ann: “Not yet. Nath and I are waiting to see her next move. He says she’s persuasive, so we should beat her at her own game.”

Hamida: (Grabs my shirt at the chest) “Oh, so you knew? How dare you let your past affect my friend? How dare you not clean up your mess before getting involved with her?”

Ann: “Hamida, calm down. He didn’t know about the crush. You can’t blame him. Plus, he was the one who worked hard to clean up the mess.”

Hamida: “Really? You’re defending him? Girl, he’s a man. What if he’s lying?”

Ann: “He’s not. I live with him, so I know he’s not.”

Hamida: “If he’s not guilty, then why isn’t he talking?”

Me: “Hamida, the reason I’m keeping quiet is because I messed up. I shouldn’t have let Ann suffer any grievance. I feel sorry that’s why I’m letting you scold me. I’m sorry I let your best friend suffer.”

Ann: "No, baby, that's too impromptu. Hammy might have other plans. Maybe her husband is back, maybe"Me: "Hey, hey, hey, princess. If you don't want to go, it's fine. I understand. But I don't want you sleeping alone."Ann: "I can take care of myself." She said nonchalantly Me: "I know. But I won't rest. So here's what I'll do: I'll send my assistant to sleep over in the guest room, with two of my personal bodyguards."Ann: "Baby, that's really not necessary. It's okay. I know you'll be back first thing tomorrow, once Mommy's home."Me: "Princess, I can't compromise on your safety."Ann: (Accepts the situation) "Okay, baby."Me: "Good. What do you want for dinner?"Ann: "I don't know. I'm not hungry."Me: "Okay. I know what to do."Still on the call, I asked her to hold on, muted my line, and used my other phone to call my assistant. The phone I rarely used apart from work. He was probably sleeping, about to sleep, or having family time but I didn't care. I decided I'd give him a bo

Ann was still in a bad mood. That devil had made my baby's mood swing. Shit. I needed to fix it ASAP.I knew words of reassurance weren't enough, so for the first time since secondary school, I sought help from my mom. I drove home the next day, forgetting gifts entirely. I didn't even know how to start the conversation. I felt like I'd stress her, or inconvenience her. Honestly, I was uncomfortable asking for help, but it was my only choice. Nancy was a threat she definitely wouldn't stop.Apparently, there was no need for gifts. My dad was on a business trip, my sister on a school excursion, and my mom was home with the maids. Thank God she didn't play mahjong like other middle-aged women in China, but she was always on shopping sprees, mini vacations, or at her weekly spa appointments. My mom was a chiller. No that woman was living the life. She wasn't even home when I arrived. The butler said she'd gone to the nearest city to get a plant.Me: "A plant? Is Mommy a florist now?" I a

First of all, let me say this: In this life, once you’re born a man, you have suffered.First, they cut part of your penis as a child, all in the name of circumcision. Then you have to be strong enough to face school bullies and protect your younger siblings. You have to study hard, pass your exams, and be responsible enough to uphold your family’s reputation. And woe betide you if you’re the first son of a wealthy family, you’re groomed from a young age to be the heir, put through self-defense training, taught to lead. Then you grow into an adult and still have to find a girlfriend, fight mental and emotional battles you absolutely cannot lose. Because tell me who in hell are Mildred and Clora? Oh, it’s Clara, she said. Do they even exist? Or are they just mannequins from a boutique window? The messiest part is, God help me if I don’t play along with Hamida. I’m finished. How do I prove I’m worthy of Ann?Even Ann was shocked. We looked at each other before it clicked that Hamida was

Nancy. Yes, my childhood friend the one who lied about Ann and me.She looked different. There was something odd about her. I didn’t really know, and I didn’t want to figure it out. God, I felt like slapping her. Then I felt like asking her why. I mean, she wasn’t like that the last time we were friends. I wanted an explanation, but it wasn’t the priority. The priority was saving my relationship with Ann.Ann knew of her but didn’t know her face, so she was about to walk away. Then this stupid girl, as if sent from hell, shouted just as Ann and I took a step forward.Nancy: “Raun Shengan.” She pronounced it perfectly.Instinctively, I turned. She came closer. “Oh, you’re used to ‘Nath’ now.” She smiled so sweetly. if I hadn’t known what she did, I’d never guess she was a devil. “Hi. At first I was confused. That’s why I used your real name.” Then she looked at Ann. “Hi. Are you Raun’s coursemate? My name’s Nancy. I’m Raun’s childhood friend.”Ann: “Hi, dear. You look so mature… compa

Hamida: (Turns to face me) “At least you cleaned up the mess. I just want you to know that the only reason you have a chance with my best friend is because I’m not a man, and we’re not lesbians. I can take care of her myself if you’re incompetent.”Me: “Yeah, I understand. I’ll do my best.”Hamida: “Good. Nice doing business with you.” She shook my hand.God, I never expected the multiple versions of Hamida. cute and innocent one moment, possessive and fierce the next. Wait, was I still crushing on her? I don’t think so. She’s Ann’s best friend; I can’t be the reason they fight. I’ve channeled my feelings to see her more like a sister-in-law, because I know she’ll always be on Ann’s team. Yes, Hamida is a girl’s girl. Thank God I’m minimizing losses. Even if there’s still some subtle emotion left, I know it’ll die soon. I can’t crush on someone and uncrush on them in one day.It was getting late. Hamida wanted us to stay, but we had to go home and prepare for the next day.We didn’t c
