Ann: “Candid shots of us were posted. They’re saying we’re dating.”

Me: “That’s a good thing.”

Ann: “Yeah, now the whole school knows we’re an item. If you ever break my heart, you’ll be a scoundrel.”

Me: “Yes, yes, yes I, Nathan, will be a scoundrel.”

Ann: “All the girls are crying lemons. They’re saying a lot of them had crushes on you, but you never gave them face… and now you’re dating.”

Me: “Oh, about that, Ann I had no idea. Is it going to be a problem?”

Ann: “No, it’s not. I trust you.”

The next day in class, Ann had an empty period, so she went to the girls’ hostel to return her room key to the matron.

Matron: “Why are you leaving the hostel? Is there a problem with your room?”

Ann: “None at all, ma.”

Matron: “Okay, that’s fine. Where are you staying now?”

Ann: (Smiling) “I live in the estate close to the school.”

Matron: “Wow, you bought a house? Or are you living with family?”

Ann: “I’m living with my boyfriend, actually.”

Matron: “He must be a rich guy, then.”

Ann: (Just smiled) “I have to get going, ma. I need to grab some stuff.”

Matron: “Have a nice time. Stay safe.”

Ann: “Thanks, ma. You too. Bye!”

She went to the school gossip center to wait for me. On her way there, she kept seeing jealous faces. Others were whispering; when she came close, they stopped, and when she walked away, they pointed and laughed.

This went on for a week.

One day on our way home, I noticed her mood was off. I kept asking what was wrong, but she said nothing. I was confused, questioning if I’d done anything to let her down but I hadn’t.

We arrived home and she was still glum. She went straight to the room.

I wanted to talk to her, but I had an emergency meeting with a new client company on the verge of bankruptcy, so I stayed in the parlor to avoid disturbing her.

In the middle of the meeting, my PA called. He told me what was happening online.

Apparently, a blogger had posted our pictures and videos, claiming I came from a humble background and “snatched my buddy’s girlfriend” to inherit her parents’ company. The post also said I constantly abused Ann, that she was trying to leave but I threatened to kill her. There were pictures of Ann looking sad, suggesting I was the cause. It even claimed Ann never liked me and slept around with photos attached of her entering hotels with various men.

I was furious, completely enraged. No man stays cool after such explosive lies about his woman.

Me: “Who leaked this?”

PA: “I tried investigating. The blogger is working for someone but won’t say. I offered her money still refused.”

Me: “Find out what she holds most dear family, herself. Dig up dirt on her, too. You have two hours. My baby’s reputation is on the line.”

I returned to my meeting and wrapped it up quickly.

An hour later, my PA delivered a detailed report.

PA: “Sir, we found her. It’s your childhood friend, Miss Nancy. She’s friends with Miss Ann’s roommate. The roommate hasn’t resumed school yet she was active in the school group when she saw your picture with Ann. She was happy for Miss Ann and posted it on her status. That’s how Miss Nancy saw it and brainwashed her. The roommate felt it wasn’t fair to Miss Nancy, so she sent the material to the blogger and paid her to stay silent. We also found that the blogger has a family in the outskirts of the city a very sick mother who needs major financial help, and a brother who’s a gambling addict.”

The roommate continued.Roommate: “I was so angry. I’m a woman too, and putting myself in her shoes… I wouldn’t be happy at all. I might even do something stupid. Since she confided in me and she’s my friend, I decided to help her get justice. So I took matters into my own hands and sent the story to a blogger I knew. She posted it, and I paid her. That’s how you started trending.”Ann: “Why didn’t you call me to verify? We were roommates for two years. If I hadn’t moved out, we’d still be sharing a room. We never had any major misunderstandings.”Roommate: “Ann, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t thinking straight. I should have checked with you at least we weren’t fighting.”Ann: “But you didn’t! Do you have any idea how deep this cut? Do you know the emotional damage you caused? The impact on my relationship? Everywhere I went, people pointed fingers. They mocked me. Girls laughed at me. I felt like a clown. There was even a day I didn’t go to school because I couldn’t face them. And now you h

We bathed together and nothing too deep happened then Ann went to cook. She made Chinese dishes: dumplings and hot pot. When she brought them to me in the room, I cleared the plate and asked for more. I rarely let her cook, and when she did, I treasured it besides, the food was delicious. I don’t even know who taught her Chinese cuisine. When we finished, she took the plates to the kitchen, washed them, did our laundry, and cleaned the house. She was in such a good mood she even sang while she worked. After the chores, she came back to the room, and I gave her a full-body massage. During the massage, she fell asleep. The next morning, we woke up, did our routine, and went to school. As we were about to enter class, we saw Ann’s roommate standing by the door, clearly waiting for someone. She approached us immediately.Roommate: “Hey, Ann. Hey.” She waved at me.Ann: “Hey.” She smiled.Roommate: “Can I have two minutes of your time? I promise I won’t be long.”Ann: “Yeah, that’s fine.

The next day, we went to school as usual. Lectures went smoothly; the scandal was completely out of our minds. We had tests and assignments due that same day, so we hit the library to finish up. After submitting the soft copies to our lecturer’s email, we headed to the canteen for lunch. In the school canteen, people kept passing by, smiling, and saying hello. My other buddies were on campus that day because of the tests and assignments. Coincidentally, they were seated just a table away.Mike: “Guys, look over there. Isn’t that Nath?”I was placing an order with Ann when I heard my name. I turned and saw them.Me: “Hey, bro.” I excused myself from Ann. “What’s up, guys? Been a minute. How have you been?”Pat: “We’re cool, man. Just got back to school yesterday.”Dave: “We heard there was a test, so we had to pull up.”Alex: “And some crazy-ass assignment.”Mike: “Man, I honestly can’t wait to get this school thing over with.”Me: “Not that I’m not tired too, but we have to pull throu

I was ecstatic. At least tonight I could sleep beside Ann again have her back in my arms. I hurried to the kitchen and prepared some grilled turkey cream pasta and apple cider, showered quickly, then went to our master bedroom. Ann was still asleep. I gently woke her.Me: “Ann… Ann, wake up.”Ann: (Grumbling) “Mmmhhmm…”Me: “Wake up. It’s time to eat.”Ann: “Why are you talking to me? And why are you here?”Me: “Eat first, then we’ll talk.”Ann: “Leave me alone.”Me: “Baby, please. Princess, you need to wake up.”Ann: “What’s going on? If I’m hungry, I’ll eat by myself. I’m an adult.”Me: “Baby, I know you’re upset with me, but if you get up and eat, I promise I’ll tell you something very important.”Ann: (Sits up) “What’s so important that you can’t tell me now?”Me: “You’ll need energy to digest what I’m about to say.”Ann: “Fine. God help you if it’s bad news.” She eyed me suspiciously. She took the food and began to eat. My eyes stayed on her the whole time. God, I missed her face

Block the news from the blogger’s mother so she doesn’t go into shock.”PA: “Yes, sir. I’ll take care of it right away.”Me: “But Nancy isn’t even in town anymore. She’s schooling in F City. The last time I saw her was in junior secondary. Why would she do all this?”PA: (Smiling) “Sir, it’s obvious. It’s because she likes you.”Me: “Nancy likes me?”PA: “Yes, sir. From the story they concocted, it says you dumped your ex-girlfriend. Your ex definitely isn’t at your school, or she would’ve spoken up meaning Nancy is your alleged ex.”Me: “How come I never knew?”PA: “Apart from when you met Ann, you’ve always been a nonchalant person. You probably wouldn’t have cared even if she told you. I think she was waiting for you to take the initiative and ask her out.”Me: “But I don’t even like her.
