Rhea's Pov

I tried to laugh it off, waving my hand despite the sting in my stomach, “It’s nothing really. Just a scratch.” But my voice was weaker than I expected.

Fiona rushed to my side, panic written all over her face, “That’s not just a scratch! We need to…”

“I said it’s fine.” I forced a smile, taking one shaky step forward. But the world tilted, black spots danced across my vision, and before I could take another breath, my knees buckled as I fell to the ground.

Fiona’s scream echoed dimly in my ears, “Miss Rhea!”

Voices, too many of them actually, rushed around me. I could barely make them out, the sound muffled. My body felt unbearably heavy, and the warmth of blood was spreading fast, soaking my clothes.

Someone was shouting, “She’s losing blood!”

Another barked, “Get something to stop it!”

But it was all so distant, fading away. I tried to say something but my lips barely moved before the darkness swallowed me whole. When I came to, my body felt leaden. The air smelled fa

Alaric's Pov I raised the small recording device, waving it in the air. Everyone turned to stare, even Rhea. Her wide eyes were filled with shock and she walked towards me, placing her palms on my arm, the child still in her embrace. “You took a recording of what they said?” “Mhm.” I nodded, “I knew that you were coming here to investigate the human trafficking case so then admitting it would be hard. I was already planning on coming here to meet you in the first place but due to your injury, I came here earlier than expected. Since roads have been built, I brought a few men and told them to stay nearby, but at the same time, out of sight. I didn't want to to alarm them of what we were doing. However, I brought a few devices with me just in case. During my investigation, I saw that their movements were a bit suspicious so I had the device on me and sure enough, I fell unconscious after eating a ‘snack’ they gave to me. However, I wasn't sure if they would also do the same to you

Rhea's Pov “Untie us.” Alaric ordered with a calm voice as the four of us were untied. When they were done, Alaric walked towards me, holding my wrists carefully, “Your hands are red.” He muttered, his eyes fixed on the reddening skin. “I'm okay. It doesn't hurt.” And that was the truth, it actually did not hurt as much as I expected it to. I turned towards Neveah who was walking towards me, tears in her eyes. However, the middle aged woman moved faster than I thought she could, seizing Neveah by the arm and yanking her back against her chest. A sharp gasp escaped Neveah’s lips as the woman pressed a jagged glass shard against her neck.“Don’t move! Don’t you dare move!” The woman shrieked, her voice cracking with desperation. Her eyes darted wildly between Alaric, his men, and the guards in black, "If you want her alive, you’ll let us through.”My whole body trembled. Neveah’s frightened eyes locked on mine, brimming with tears, “Miss Rhea…” Her voice wavered.Alaric’s arm shot out

Rhea's Pov Her eyes widened, disbelief flickering through her tears, but I pressed on.“Even Alaric has killed people before.” I reminded her, my tone almost mocking, “And yet, here we are, standing on the same ground, breathing the same air. You and I, Fiona, we are birds of the same feather. Murderers, betrayers, avengers. Whatever name you want to give us, it’s the same blood that stains us. So who am I to judge what you have done?” She might have done wrong, but it was the villagers who were even more wrong. I wasn't trying to justify her but years of hatred and seeing the people who had tortured you in the worst way possible live their life to the fullest would ignite more hatred in you. Her lips parted soundlessly, as though she wanted to deny it but couldn’t find the words. Her chest rose and fell, ragged, as the weight of my laughter lingered between us.I leaned closer, my eyes boring into hers, “So don’t speak to me like you’re doomed, like you’re beyond redemption, as if

Rhea's Pov “Fiona, what are you saying??” I muttered under my breath. Fiona laughed, tears gathering at the corner of her eyes, “Yes. After Ava, it was you. In the first place, I came to work in the company because I was targeting you. After I went back to the city, and I found Coleman Truce, I told him that apart from the Laurent's, there was someone else who had been hidden all these while. People who were the most involved in everything that had happened and yet, pretended to be good people. It was the Thorne's. Your father, Howard Thorne was the person who decided to venture into something like this, and he roped other people in with him. Howard was the only person who was in contact personally with the head of other traffickers and he was also the man who had Norman Truce killed. He laid low all these years and somehow, destroyed all evidence that led to him. So I planned with Coleman to let Ava recommend me to work with you first and afterwards, he can take Ava away. During t

Rhea's Pov The moment the words left my mouth, Fiona’s head snapped toward me. Her smile stretched, wide and crooked, eyes gleaming with a strange light that made my stomach twist. “Yes.” She whispered, “I enjoyed it. Every single second of it.” Her laughter bubbled up, sharp and uneven, echoing against the stone walls. It wasn’t the laughter of relief or joy, it was the laughter of someone who had shattered long ago and pieced themselves back together with hatred. “I thought the guilt would eat me alive.” She continued, her tone shifting suddenly, softening as if she were confiding in me, a friend, “But no… What I hated most was that I could finally understand them. I could understand the satisfaction of watching someone else’s suffering. I could understand why they smiled as they sold us. And that…” Her voice cracked, her hands clawing at her own chest, “That terrified me more than the blood on my hands.” The middle-aged woman trembled where she stood. The old man shifted his

Rhea's Pov “Connected?” Fiona repeated, her voice weak. She sounded like someone had repeatedly puffed out all the fire in her. She looked tired, tired of the world, tired of everything. Slowly, she raised her head to meet the eyes of the three people in front of us. “Day after day after day, I struggled to keep my heart in bay. I forced myself to watch each and every one of you rejoice on the blood and sacrifice that you have built. I made myself force the hatred that I felt for you down my throat just so that the day where I would see all of you cry and beg for mercy would come.” Fiona's voice got louder with every sentence she uttered, the corner of her eyes had turned red, veins protruding from her neck and forehead. “I watched as you drowned two innocent people who wanted to save children just for their purity. I watched as you all laughed and feasted after their death. I watched as you counted the money you made from selling your children to human traffickers with smiles and
