Rhea's POV

“Who are you? What do you want with me? Who sent you here?” I fired the questions out like bullets, my voice low but sharp. I kept my posture still, but my fingers curled against the cold metal of the wheelchair, needing something to anchor myself to.

The man behind me chuckled, dark and lazy, like this was all just some amusing little game to him, “Tch. I thought you'd fall to the ground crying. Maybe crawl into the corner and beg me not to hurt you. But instead…” He paused, and I felt the shift in his presence, like he tilted his head to inspect me, “You’re standing. Asking questions. No trembling. Brave little Rhea.”

I swallowed hard, trying to keep my voice from cracking, “Bravery has nothing to do with it. You have a gun to my back. That makes you a coward.”

Another laugh. This one deeper, “Oh, I like you. I see why he does too.” He let out a soft sigh, one that pricked my skin, “As for who sent me… you’ll know soon enough. Very soon.”
