Sophie remained aloof and silent throughout the day, but with all the bruises, all the scars she bore, none of it hurt as much as this ache in her heart. She kept her back straight, her gaze unyielding, her lips pressed into a thin line as the war room buzzed around her. The barracks were alive with chatter, maps sprawled across tables, drones and explosives being checked, and positions of the hunters confirmed.

Jax’s voice rang out, precise and controlled. “The Wolf King is unlike any pack leader we’ve faced. He is ruthless, cunning, and far stronger than any wolf we’ve encountered. His castle is fortified, his personal guard elite—on par with us. Every angle, every approach, every squad placement must be flawless. The attack must be a complete surprise. Explosives on the perimeter, choppers dropping squads inside, hunters hitting from all sides simultaneously. The Kingdom will fall because we’ve planned it perfectly.”

Sophie astutely avoided Jax’s gaze and studied the maps, notin

  • CHASING MONSTERS   Chapter 57 — The King’s Return to the Council Chamber

The chamber was still and heavy, the kind of stillness that came only when the voices of Veronica and Arnold were absent. No perfume, no smug remarks — only stone, torchlight, and Ronan waiting across the long table. The King let the silence breathe a moment before he spoke. “At least we can speak plainly,” he said.Ronan inclined his head, ever steady. “As it should be, Majesty.”The King leaned back in his chair, the weight of weeks pressing on his shoulders. “Fill me in. Everything I’ve missed while I’ve been paraded through taverns and halls.”Ronan began with the packs — defenses, border patrols, disputes smoothed over, soldiers shifted where they were needed most. Then came whispers of the mages.“They’ve seen something,” Ronan said carefully, “though as always they speak in riddles. A one-eyed woman in a swamp. They would not say if she is friend or foe. Only that she watches. That she matters.”The King’s eyes narrowed. “The mages toy with us. They throw bones into the fire an

  • CHASING MONSTERS   Chapter 56 — Veronica’s Triumph

The castle smelled of polish and lavender again, not damp road dust and horse sweat. Veronica breathed it in like perfume, like proof that she was home, that she belonged. A queen’s perfume. Straightening her skirts, she swept into the solar, her ladies trailing behind like jeweled shadows.A ball. That was what the court needed. That was what she needed. She paced the chamber with measured grace, jeweled fingers brushing the velvet drapes, head held high. “Something grand,” she declared. “Something dazzling. The halls glittering, the music endless, the nobles in awe. I want chandeliers dripping with light until the dawn itself grows jealous. The King has returned to his castle, and we will remind the court who reigns beside him.”Her ladies tittered and murmured, nodding like dolls wound to agree. Veronica savored it — that chorus of worship disguised as laughter. But one, timid little Clara, had the nerve to ask, “What of the prisoner, my lady? Some whisper she still lives.”Veronic

  • CHASING MONSTERS   Chapter 55— The King's Return

The carriage jolted over the cobbled road as the spires of the castle loomed on the horizon, pale gold in the late afternoon light. Home. The King sat back in his seat, broad shoulders filling the corner, eyes half-hooded as he watched the countryside roll past the window. He had enjoyed the tour of the packs — the feasts, the simple laughter, the calloused hands that clasped his with loyalty and trust. It reminded him of a time before crowns and thrones, when he had been hidden with the mages, living like an ordinary wolf cub. Life had been simple then. Honest. Hard, but real. And yet, even surrounded by his people these past weeks, he had felt… homesick. For what, he couldn’t say. A hunger that had nothing to do with food or duty.Beside him, Veronica’s voice swelled again, tugging him out of his reverie.“…and of course when we return, the court will expect a proper reception. A ball, perhaps. I could wear the emerald silk — no, the crimson — the one that makes the ladies squirm wi

  • CHASING MONSTERS   Chapter 54 — The Drone Archives

The room smelled faintly of ozone and stale smoke, Ryder’s scent woven into the machinery itself. Racks of humming servers lined the walls, their tiny green lights blinking like watchful eyes. Wires tangled underfoot, a nest of snakes waiting to trip the careless. Shiloh’s boots scuffed quietly as she slipped inside. The door clicked shut behind her. For a moment, she just stood there, heart hammering. This was stupid. Dangerous. But she couldn’t stop. She crossed to the central console, its glow painting her face blue. The interface opened at her touch, Ryder’s endless web of files sprawling across the screen. Some were coded, some hidden. She dug deeper, clicking through directories, fingers flying as if the truth might slip away if she wasn’t fast enough.Log feeds. Battle reports. Archived footage. Her throat tightened as she opened one marked Springriver. The screen flickered to life with images she wished she could forget: wolves scattering, their eyes wild in terror; fire explo

  • CHASING MONSTERS   Chapter 53 — Fractures at Base

Base used to hum with energy. Boots thudding in the yard, sparring matches breaking into laughter, the kind of camaraderie that made you forget for a moment that our work was blood and shadows. Now it felt hollow. Training schedules went through the motions. Guns were cleaned, blades sharpened, but the spark was gone. And Lucian—Lucian’s madness seeped into everything like smoke you couldn’t scrub out.I walked in, the echo of prison walls still clinging to me, and stopped short. The air was so thick it felt like pushing through fog.Jax and Lucian were locked in a meeting, their voices muffled but sharp. Jax’s obsession with Sophie made him restless, twitching like a hound on a too-tight chain. Lucian’s obsession was worse. He wanted bloodlines. He wanted to twist fate itself. At one of the battered tables, Kofi sat smoking, Gideon slouched beside him, a couple of the other hunters gathered like strays around a fire.“So you went to the swamps,” one of the rookies said. “What’d you f

  • CHASING MONSTERS   Chapter 52 — Shiloh’s Prison Visit

The prison smelled like rust and despair. Stone corridors stretched endlessly, lined with iron bars that hummed with the weight of old secrets. Water dripped somewhere in the dark, steady as a heartbeat.Shiloh followed the guard down the narrow passage, her boots clinking against the floor. Each step echoed too loudly, like the prison itself wanted her to turn back. But she didn’t. She couldn’t.She’d told herself this was pointless. That he wasn’t worth the pain. But the truth was, she’d carried questions in her chest for too long, heavy as stones. They had to be dropped. One way or another. The guard halted, pulling a ring of keys from his belt. “You’re sure?” he asked, voice low. “He’s… not right in the head.”“I know,” Shiloh replied, her jaw tight. “Open it.”The lock groaned as the door swung back, and there he was.Her father. He looked like a ruin. Hair tangled in greasy ropes, beard wild, eyes bright and empty all at once. He sat hunched on the cot, scratching the wall with
