Lieutenant Theron Whitmore looked immaculate.

His dress uniform was pristine, his brass buttons gleamed, and his dark brown hair was styled with crisp, military precision.

He wasn't wearing a spare uniform. He was wearing his primary service dress, looking entirely unbothered, as if the panic-stricken phone call he'd made to her over two hours ago had never happened.

He didn't look relieved to see her. He looked apoplectic.

"Delphine." Theron hissed, stepping into the alcove and grabbing her upper arm, pulling her deeper into the shadows away from the main hallway.

His grip was tight enough to bruise. "What in God's name are you doing here?"

Della blinked, staring at his pristine chest. "Theron... your uniform. You called me this morning. You told me you forgot it in your room at the main house, that you were going to be disciplined if you didn't have it for the Admiral's inspection..."

"I found a spare in my locker at the officer's quarters hours ago!" Theron snapped. "I tried calling the guest house to tell you, but you'd already left!"

Della felt the blood drain from her face. "I took the bus to Ironshore, Theron. It was pouring. The guard at the gate wouldn't let me in..."

"I know the guard didn't let you in!" Theron cut her off, his eyes darting nervously toward the hallway. "And instead of going home like a sensible woman, you made a scene at the gate! Do you have any idea what you've done?"

His eyes raked over her figure, registering the massive wool coat draped over her shoulders and the trimmed umbrella resting by her leg.

Theron's face twisted in disgust. "Where'd you get that coat?"

"It belongs to Admiral Cavendish." Della’s voice dropped, a cold knot tightening in her stomach. "I was standing in the downpour. He pulled up to the gate and offered me a ride to the headquarters..."

"You took a ride in the Fleet Admiral's personal vehicle?" Theron's jaw worked furiously, a muscle pulsing violently in his cheek. "Are you out of your mind, Delphine? Do you know how that looks? My wife, showing up at my base looking like a drowned rat, parading around in another man's jacket?"

"I was soaked because I was trying to save your reputation!" Della's quiet voice sharpened. "I spent two hours on a bus in freezing rain because you panicked on the phone! I didn't come here to embarrass you, Theron. I came because you asked me to!"

"I asked you to have my mother bring it tonight if she was coming toward the base!" Theron snarled, stepping closer, towering over her with overwhelming menace. "I didn't tell you to play the martyr! Look at you. Always trying to prove how useful you are, always trying to act like the long-suffering, devoted wife!"

He reached out and roughly seized the collar of Severin's jacket, yanking it off her shoulders.

The chill air of the corridor struck Della's damp skin, making her gasp. Beneath the coat, her white dress was still visibly damp and clinging.

Theron's eyes narrowed with venomous suspicion as he looked at her. "And you wore this? A white dress in a rainstorm? Did you deliberately try to look like a victim, Delphine? Were you hoping some high-ranking officer would take pity on the poor, broken, damaged girl?"

The words struck her with the force of a physical blow.

Della's breath hitched in her throat.

She looked at the man she'd been married to for two years. The man who'd held her hand while she learned to walk again after the crash, the man whose mother had taken her inheritance under the guise of "stewardship."

"Today's our anniversary, Theron." Her voice was barely audible over the hum of the building's ventilation. "Our second wedding anniversary."

Theron froze.

For a single fraction of a second, a shadow of awkwardness flickered across his sharp features.

His eyes darted away, dropping to the garment bag resting on the bench. He'd forgotten entirely.

But instead of an apology, his face hardened into bitter, defensive arrogance.

"Anniversary?" Theron scoffed, a cruel, humorless smile touching his lips. "You're bringing up anniversaries here? Pathetic, Delphine. We both know what this marriage is. Don't sit there and pretend this was ever some grand romance."

He leaned down, his voice dropping to an icy whisper that sliced straight to her core. "My mother and I took you in when you had nothing left. Your parents were dead, your body was shattered, and you couldn't even walk to the bathroom without help.

I married you to honor an old family promise and save you from being tossed into a care facility. You're living on Whitmore charity, Delphine. So don't lecture me about anniversaries!"

Della stood completely still.

In her mind, the years peeled back in an instant.

She remembered waking up in the intensive care unit five years ago, her body broken, crying for her parents. She remembered Mireille Whitmore standing over her hospital bed.

Not with the warm, maternal love she'd shown Della throughout her childhood, but with a cold, terrifying detachment.

You survived, Delphine. Mireille's voice echoed from the past. Gloria’s gone, but you survived. What a heavy debt you have to pay.

Della had spent five years paying that debt.

She'd accepted living alone in the drafty, isolated guest house on the Whitmore estate.

She'd accepted the humiliating job at Mireille's gynecology practice where she was paid barely above minimum wage to file patient charts and endure Mireille's constant criticism in front of the nursing staff.

She'd endured his refusal to consummate their marriage, convincing herself he was just being "respectful of her physical limitations."

She was top of her class in psychology. She'd written a thesis on the insidious mechanics of coercive control and emotional manipulation. Yet, blinded by grief and misplaced gratitude, she'd allowed herself to be caged by the very dynamic she knew how to diagnose.

Theron folded Severin's wool coat over his arm, his expression coldly triumphant.

"I'm going to take Admiral Cavendish's jacket back to his office and apologize for my wife's unseemly behavior." Theron adjusted his collar briskly. "You'll take the uniform bag, leave this base immediately, and take the bus back home."

Della looked at him, her hazel eyes terrifyingly clear, terrifyingly quiet. "When will you be home?”

"I'm staying at the main house tonight." Theron didn't even look at her as he checked his watch. "My mother and I have dinner arrangements with Dad’s colleagues. Go back to the guest house and stay there until I come by tomorrow to deal with this mess."

He turned on his heel and strode away down the corridor, carrying Severin's heavy coat with him, leaving Della standing alone in the cold marble hallway.

The garment bag sat on the wooden bench beside her. The useless uniform she'd suffered two hours in the storm to deliver.

Della didn't pick it up.

She let it sit there on the bench, cold and abandoned.

Instead, she reached down and picked up the black folded umbrella Admiral Cavendish had given her.

Della wrapped her fingers around its solid, polished handle, feeling the weight of it in her palm.

She walked slowly down the corridor, past the bowing guards and the whispering staff, out through the glass doors, and into the continuing rain.

Standing on the wide concrete steps of the Navy Headquarters, Della pressed the release button on the handle.

The dark canopy snapped open with a sharp, resonant sound, shielding her completely from the falling water.

She drew in a deep breath. The air inside the umbrella still carried the faint, undeniable scent of cedarwood and gunpowder.

Theron thought he'd stripped her of her dignity. He thought he'd reminded her of her place as a broken, dependent charity case.

But as Della looked out over the grey expanse of Seasmoke Bay, her chest rose, her spine straightened, and a cold, dangerous fire ignited deep within her soul.

The sharp buzz of Della's mobile phone cut through the stifling quiet of the annex just past one in the afternoon.Della didn't need to check the display. Only one person called with such rigid, demanding punctuality. It had been barely four hours since Mireille had delivered her cruel monologue in the kitchen and walked out."Hayes is bringing the car around to the annex." Mireille's voice came through the speaker before Della could even part her lips, smooth and entirely unbothered. "Be outside in ten minutes. That silk you ruined yesterday was bespoke, and it cost a small fortune. Now we have to waste an entire afternoon sourcing a gown for an anniversary dinner you threw a tantrum over."Della sat on the edge of the mattress, picking at a loose thread on her oversized shirt.Mireille made it sound so effortless, twisting the entire miserable event around until Della was the only villain in the room.Della stared at the red end-call button on the screen. The next morning broke clear and crisp, the storm having washed the Thornfield sky into a sharp, brilliant blue.Della was sitting at her small kitchen table, reviewing her university notes on cognitive behavioral therapy, when the back door of the guest house clicked open without a knock.Mireille Whitmore stepped inside.Even in the casual morning hours, Mireille was a vision of immaculate, aristocratic perfection. She wore a tailored cream cashmere suit, her blonde-streaked hair styled in an elegant chignon, her double-strand pearl necklace gleaming at her throat."Delphine." Mireille greeted her, her eyes instantly sweeping over the kitchen with subtle judgment. "You're still in loungewear? It's past nine o'clock.""Good morning, Mireille." Della replied calmly, not rising from her chair. "I don't have lectures until this afternoon. And no clinic shift today."Mireille sat opposite Della. She didn't offer a kiss on the cheek or ask how Della was feeling after yesterday's downpour.

The bus ride back to Thornfield was a slow, agonizing descent into hell.Della sat near the rear, squeezed into the corner seat by the fogged glass, clutching the Admiral's umbrella across her lap like a weapon. The radiator beneath her seat hissed violently, blowing dry, stale heat over her bare, waterlogged legs, but it did nothing to warm the ice settled deep inside her bones. Her thin white linen dress, still saturated and clinging like a cold second skin, left almost nothing to the imagination.Water dripped steadily from her hem, forming a puddle around her bare ankles. The fabric clung to every curve, every scar, every vulnerable inch of her body.Every eye on the crowded bus was fixed on her.The men stared with undisguised hunger, their eyes lingering over the translucent fabric plastered to her waist, her chest, and the faint outline of her undergarments. One man in a business suit didn't even bother hiding his interest, leaning forward in his seat, his tongue darting out to

The freezing deluge had long since turned Della’s white linen dress translucent, plastering the thin fabric to her ribs and the surgical scar winding down her right hip.The modest, high-collared piece chosen specifically to satisfy her mother-in-law Mireille's rigid standards for "appropriate naval spousal attire" was completely ruined. Her teeth clicked violently together.
