Five years ago, a car crash killed Delphine Ravelle's parents and left her broken in more ways than one. Now she's trapped in a nightmare arranged marriage to Theron Whitmore, the physical therapist who "saved" her, then married her out of pity to avoid a scandal. Theron doesn't love her. He makes that painfully clear every day. He sleeps in a different house, controls every cent she spends, and reminds her constantly that she should be grateful anyone wanted "damaged goods." His mother Mireille—once Della's beloved "second mom"—has turned into her worst enemy, stealing Della's inheritance while treating her like an embarrassing burden the family can't shake off. Then Della meets Theron's powerful and dangerously attractive boss. Where Theron sees a broken charity case, he sees a brilliant woman worth fighting for. His kindness cracks something open inside her…something she thought died with her parents. Their affair ignites a war. Theron and Mireille will destroy her rather than let her go. But Della's done being a victim. Freedom comes at a brutal cost, though. Her passionate pursuit of love brings new demons and his obsessive need to protect her. Sometimes the men who save you can also trap you. Can Della and her savior learn the difference between love and control before they destroy each other?

Chapter 1

CH.1

The freezing deluge had long since turned Della’s white linen dress translucent, plastering the thin fabric to her ribs and the surgical scar winding down her right hip.

The modest, high-collared piece chosen specifically to satisfy her mother-in-law Mireille's rigid standards for "appropriate naval spousal attire" was completely ruined.

Her teeth clicked violently together. Every breath felt like inhaling crushed glass, yet her numb, bloodless fingers refused to slacken their grip on the heavy canvas garment bag.

She hunched her shoulders, curving her spine to form a human canopy over the bag.

Not a single drop was allowed to touch his uniform, even as her own blood turned to slush.

"I've already told you, miss," the gate guard said from the dry warmth of his glass booth. "Civilians aren't permitted past the perimeter without prior clearance logged in the system. Recruits don't get visitors on non-visiting days."

He didn’t bother looking up from his terminal, though his eyes had already raked over her soaked, clinging silhouette twice. "No name on the manifest, no clearance. Step back from the barrier."

"He isn't a recruit." Della's voice trembled, slurred slightly by her chattering teeth.

A sharp spike of agony shot up her lower back that nearly drove her to her knees, but she caught herself on the ice-cold turnstile. "He’s Lieutenant Theron Whitmore. The senior inspection is in ten minutes… if he doesn't have this bag, he’ll be reprimanded—"

"Then he should have remembered his credentials. And your pass!" The guard slid the glass pane shut, muffling her pleas.

Della pressed her forehead against the freezing glass, her vision tunneling into grey static.

Two hours on a delayed commuter bus. A mile-long limp from the terminal in a gale-force downpour.

All for her husband. And yet, he hadn’t even bothered to type her name into the gate log.

To him, her arrival was an assumed convenience; her presence, an afterthought.

Standing exposed in the open storm, shivering uncontrollably while being openly eyed and dismissed, a bitter, familiar sting burned behind her eyelids.

But she clamped her jaw shut, lifting her chin high. She wouldn't cry in front of a gate guard.

Before she could speak again, a low, powerful thrum of a heavy engine reverberated through the wet asphalt.

The guard's impassive face instantly snapped to rigid attention as he pressed the barrier override, stepping out of the guardhouse into the rain with his right hand rising in a sharp salute.

A massive black car, bearing silver military flags on its front fenders, pulled up beside the barrier. Instead of driving through, the vehicle ground to a halt.

The driver's side window slid down smoothly, revealing a profile carved from marble and sharp angles.

A striking man leaned slightly toward the window.

He wore a dark military uniform with medals gleaming on indigo wool and silver stars glittering on his shoulder boards.

His dark hair was partially swept back, a few loose strands clinging to his temples in the damp air.

His eyes were completely hypnotic, strikingly mismatched: one a deep, velvet brown, the other a sharp, piercing winter blue.

"What's the delay here?" His deep baritone cut straight through the rush of the wind and rain.

"Sir!" The guard stammered, his posture board-straight. "A civilian attempting unauthorized entry, sir. She claims she's delivering a uniform for Lieutenant Whitmore. I was informing her of base clearance protocol."

The striking man didn't look at the soldier.

His mismatched eyes shifted directly to Della. He took in the sight of her in an instant: the trembling frame, the water dripping from her dark hair, the transparent dress clinging to her milky brown skin, and the stubborn, unbreakable tilt of her chin.

There was no terror in her hazel eyes. Only a quiet, burning dignity that seemed utterly at odds with her wretched state.

"Who are you?" he asked directly, locking his gaze onto hers with an intensity that felt physical.

Della held his gaze, a strange spark of defiance flaring in her chest. "I'm Delphine Ravelle—Delphine Whitmore. My husband forgot his uniform for today's inspection. I brought it."

The man's left eyebrow arched slightly. "Get in."

"Excuse me?" Della blinked, startled. "I... I can take the walk. I don't want to ruin your seats. I'm completely soaked."

"I'm not in the habit of repeating myself, little girl." His tone was dry. "The administrative wing is a mile past the parade grounds. You'll collapse before you reach it. Get in."

Della cast a quick, triumphant glance at the pale guard, whose jaw was practically resting on his boots, before sliding into the front passenger seat of the executive vehicle with the garment bag clutched tightly to her chest.

She pulled the heavy door shut, sealing out the roar of the storm.

The man immediately dialed the climate control to maximum heat. Warm air instantly enveloped her shivering legs.

Della couldn't help a small, breathless laugh from escaping her lips.

He glanced at her from the corner of his eye as he steered the heavy SUV through the base checkpoints. "Something amuses you?"

"I was just thinking," Della spoke softly, crossing her arms over the bag, "that you're much kinder than you look."

His brow furrowed as if being called kind was a personal insult to his military record. "Don't mistake basic military efficiency for charity. Civilians wandering a restricted defense installation are a security liability."

"Of course," she murmured, a gentle smile touching her lips. "Strict security."

They drove in a comfortable silence for a few minutes, passing grey barracks and massive dock cranes looming in the mist.

Della looked out the window, mesmerized by the sheer scale of the base.

"Do you know Theron?" she asked after a moment. "Are you two friends?"

He turned the wheel smoothly with one hand. "I know of Lieutenant Whitmore. Though I don't recall receiving an invitation to his wedding."

"We've been married for two years." Della held up her right hand to show the plain gold band resting on her ring finger. "It was a quiet affair."

His eyes flicked down to her small hand, then back to the road. "Two years. Yet you introduced yourself with your maiden name first."

"I didn't mean to." Della’s voice dropped slightly, an edge of quiet bitterness entering her tone. "Ravelle is my name. The Whitmores just... borrowed it."

He remained silent, but his grip on the leather steering wheel tightened noticeably.

Five minutes later, he parked the SUV beneath the grand portico of the twenty-story Mistral Navy Headquarters building.

Armed guards at the entrance immediately snapped to attention as he stepped out, holding an umbrella open for Della.

Della slid out of the passenger side, the garment bag resting over her forearm.

They entered the marble-floored lobby, where officers and staff halted in their tracks, saluting stiffly as they passed.

"Admiral Cavendish, sir!" A female captain hurried forward, saluting crisply.

"Captain," he replied without breaking his stride. "Have Lieutenant Theron Whitmore summoned to the second-floor administrative briefing room immediately."

Della froze dead in her tracks as the name echoed off the high marble walls.

Admiral Cavendish.

She stared at the man beside her.

At the stars glinting on his epaulets, at the regal, absolute deference paid to him by every officer in the building.

Her heart almost leaped out of her chest.

"You're... you're Admiral Severin Cavendish?" she whispered, shakingly. "The Commander of Ironclad Defense? The Fleet Admiral?"

Severin stopped, turning his head slightly to look down at her. "Did the stars on my shoulders confuse you?"

"I... I was rude to you in the car!" Della gasped, her face flushing bright crimson.

"I got your leather seats wet, I called you..." She cut herself off, horrified, before bowing ninety degrees in a desperate, formal apology. "I'm deeply sorry, Admiral Cavendish! Please... please don't hold my disrespect against Lieutenant Whitmore. He had no idea I was coming today!"

When she straightened up, she realized Severin wasn't looking at her face. His intense, mismatched eyes were fixed pointedly on her chest.

Della looked down.

In the bright lights of the lobby, her wet linen dress was entirely transparent.

The dark outline of her bra and the curves of her skin were starkly, undeniably visible to every passing soldier in the room.

Mortified, Della slammed her arms over her chest, stepping back with a choked gasp.

Severin looked away. He unbuttoned his heavy military overcoat and removed it from his broad shoulders.

Without a word, he draped it over Della, carefully pulling the edges closed over her chest to block her completely from the prying eyes of the personnel.

The unexpected weight and radiating warmth made Della's breath hitch.

The coat smelled rich, carrying notes of faint gunpowder and crisp autumn wool. It engulfed her small frame, reaching past her knees.

"Sit on that bench." Severin ordered, pointing to a plush leather settee tucked into a private alcove off the main hallway. "Wait there."

He reached behind his back and offered her his folded black umbrella. "Take this. The rain won't stop anytime soon, and you've got a long way home."

"Thank you, Admiral Cavendish," Della whispered, taking it carefully.

Severin didn’t reply. He turned and walked down the corridor, his boots clicking with measured precision on the marble.

Della slumped back onto the cushion, burying her face in her hands.

I'm a disgrace to the entire psychology department. The thought was bitter. I just spent five minutes bantering with the most powerful naval officer in the Mistral Federation.

A few minutes later, firm, rapid footsteps echoed down the hall.

Della stood up hastily, expecting Severin. Instead, she found herself face-to-face with her husband’s cold gaze.
