“I see you’re still keeping the towel tradition.”

I turned sharply, heart skipping, to find Asher standing right beside the closed bedroom door. I froze.

He was here. Again.

Twice in a row.

And I didn’t know how to take that, didn’t know what it meant after everything he’d said the last time we were in this room. After he told me to run.

I didn’t know whether I should be scared or relieved. Was this good? Was it bad? I didn’t know. All I knew was that I was on high alert, every part of me bracing for what he’d do next. I had no idea what to say in response to his words, so I just stood there silently, wondering how long it would take me to bolt back into the bathroom.

“You do know Luca’s not here,” he said, his voice low and unreadable. “So you didn’t have to keep the towel tradition still going.”

Luca?

I blinked, confused. “What does Luca have to do with this?”

“Nothing is going on between Luca and me,” I added quickly. “He told you himself—there was nothing.”

I was scared.Terrified of what Asher might do once he got to me. Would he break down the door? Did he have a spare key? Oh my God....did he have a spare key to the bathroom? What am I even thinking? What is this? What am I doing?Panic coils in my chest. I glance at the door....it’s wood. Thick, solid. I don’t think he can break it. But then again… what do I know? The fear doesn't leave. It just boils over, making it hard to breathe.I stay standing until my legs feel like jelly. Until my body’s too tired to hold itself up. So I sit.And that’s how I ended up spending the entire night in the bathroom. Curled up on the toilet seat. Cold. Alone. Waiting.Morning comes slowly, a soft light peeking under the door. My limbs ache. My neck is stiff. My heart still beats with caution as I gather the courage to stand and slowly, nervously, unlock the door.I open it.....and I’m greeted by silence. The bedroom is empty. No sign of Asher.I release the breath I hadn’t even realized I was holdin

I am tongue-tied.Surprised? Definitely. But more than that....I don’t even know what to say.Luca is the one who finally speaks, his hands raised in a calming gesture. “It’s not what it looks like. I was just leaving.”Asher’s voice slices through the air, laced with venom. “Yeah, I can see that. You were done with her, and now you’re leaving.”My eyes narrow. “What do you mean?” I ask, but his glare lands on me next, sharp and brutal.“Shut the hell up, you whore.”The words punch through me. I blink, stunned.“You think I don’t know what you’ve been doing?” he growls. “You think I don’t know what the two of you have been sneaking around doing behind my back?”“Hey, calm down, man,” Luca cuts in, voice firm but cautious. “I’m not doing anything with her.”“Oh my god,” I whisper, disbelief twisting in my gut. “I can’t believe you.”Asher’s hand jerks back toward me in warning.“I told you to shut the fuck up,” he spits. He turns back to Luca.“So this is what you’ve been doing all t

What Luca said made absolutely no sense to me—but by the time I opened my mouth to ask, he was already walking away.“Luca, wait! What does that even mean?” I called after him, brows furrowed, with confusion. He turned, letting out a sigh—long, exasperated like he was already worn down by all of this. His eyes met mine with that familiar mix of mischief.“I’m not gonna spell everything out for you, little Ari,” he said, shaking his head slightly. “You gotta put your big girl pants on.”Then he winked.“Alright, I’m off. Ciao.”And just like that, he kept walking. Gone before I could pull another word from my lips.I just sat there, frowning, arms crossed tightly over my chest.“What the hell does that even mean?” I muttered to myself. But the silence didn’t answer. And the worst part? A tiny part of me suspected I already knew. So that night, I made a decision.I was going to try and get Asher’s love back. Whatever remnants of it still lingered, whatever feeling I could pull from him,

That caught me off guard. “Afraid for him?” he said “Afraid for him?” I asked quietly. He nodded, that faraway look in his eyes again. “I’m afraid he’ll do something he can’t take back. Something he’ll regret for the rest of his life. Not just regret… something that will end him.”He looked right at me, dead in the eye, like he was begging me to understand. Like he was handing me something dangerous and delicate, and trusting me not to drop it.And I understood one thing clearly, my life was not just out of my hands. It was in danger. My eyes drifted toward the room we’d turned into Leon’s study space. And suddenly, I wasn’t just afraid for myself anymore.I had everything on the line.“Do you think he would do something to Leon?”I asked, my voice trembling. “He can’t do something to Leon. Please, Luca… he can’t. He’s not guilty of anything. If Asher wants to hurt someone, it should be me. I should be the one paying for it. So if he wants to do anything, if someone has to take th

Five Years LaterAsher had left… but not before he made sure I ate every single thing on that plate. Every bite. I was already full, but he wouldn’t let me stop. I had to finish it all. And when the door finally closed behind him, I was already crying, that’s when the sobbing started. Full-on, heaving sobs that racked through my chest until I couldn’t hold anything down.I vomited. Then I just sat there, slumped over the toilet bowl, my arms limp and my cheeks burning, wondering why is my life like this? Why me?It was still so hard to believe that the man I had loved all of my life, the man I had trusted, that this man I thought I was sacrificing everything for, was this man who hated me so much now. It was clear to see in his eyes how much he hated me. All those times that I would hold Leon in my arms and think of the three of us meeting, of him seeing his son, seeing me, the two of us forgiving each other. Him seeing all the sacrifices that I had to make for us, but when I look in

I go back into Dad’s office. Head straight for the safe. I kneel down, press the familiar numbers, and it clicks open.Same passcode. Same stacks.Still there. Not enough for four people. Maybe not even enough for three if we’re being smart. But for one? It’s more than enough. Now comes the hardest part. The body.I need a body in that room. Something to burn, something to leave behind.I need someone dead Or… already dead.My hands are shaking as I leave the house.I do everything I’m not supposed to know how to do. I get the burner phone. I get the wig, the cheap makeup, the cover identity. I make the calls. I ask the questions that you’re not allowed to ask unless you’ve seen too much of the world. And somehow I don’t even know how...I do it. I get what I need.An already cremated female body. Bagged. Heavy. Silent.By the time I return to the house, no one’s there.I carry the gym bag upstairs. Put it under my bed and start putting everything in motion. The escape. The fire. The

Dad continues, determined.“That way, even if they find out our death was staged, by then we’ll be so far gone, it won’t matter. It buys us time.”He’s already shuffling papers, his hands trembling slightly.“We’ll need money,” he mutters, half to himself. “Cash is already withdrawn. Quiet withdrawals. Small amounts. Just enough to go unnoticed. We have money in the safe—it’s enough. More than enough to disappear.”He’s thinking out loud now, unstoppable. A man with a plan. A desperate man, but a determined one.“Once we disappear, we change our names. Our looks. Start over. Jobs that don’t make people curious. Maybe in a place where the Italian Mafia has no reach, where they don’t talk to anyone.”I listen to every word, not interrupting. My heart beats faster.“And your mother and I can get jobs...,” he says.“And me,” I whisper. He glances up, eyes soft. “Yes. You too.”“We can make it work. We can give your child, my grandchild a good life. A real life. I promise you, I can take c

And now my mom was full-on crying, and I was lost as I just stood there. I wasn’t expecting this.“Why?” I asked carefully, slowly. I didn't believe her.“He doesn’t think you can do it. He doesn’t want you to do it. And he’s decided to put all our lives at stake,” she said, wiping her tears. “He’s in his office right now, making a plan, calling in every favour he can to get us out of here.”She wiped at her face again, more roughly this time.“Ariella, we won’t survive. We can’t. We won’t survive. Nobody escapes the Mafia.”She looked me dead in the eye, and something inside me shattered.“Listen to me, Ariella. Go talk to your dad. Nobody escapes the Mafia. Nobody gets away. And our death...it will be hard. It will be bad. We’ll be made an example of. A warning to everyone. Come for all.”She sniffled and tried to gather herself, or at least tried to look like she was gathering herself, as she added, “Think of yourself. Think of your baby.”Another swipe of her nose. Her face was pa
