I had loved him for more than ten years. I wanted to accompany him wherever he went. I wanted to be close to him, even if all I could get was a disapproving grunt from him.
After all, he was Qing Han. Who wouldn’t want a man like him for herself? He was the most handsome boy in the city. He was powerful even at a young age. So when his mom, Aunt Wu, approached me and asked me to marry him, I thought my dreams were finally coming true. My mom died, or rather, was killed when I was only fifteen years old. I watched it happen. But because my grandfather was too focused on preserving the family name and the legacy he had built over the years, I was forbidden from testifying against the culprit in court. And this was all because it was his precious daughter, my mom’s stepsister, who had committed the act. “Little Xiu, that was just an accident. Your aunt didn’t mean to do it. Why don’t you let this go, and Grandpa will see to it that she is well buried?” When he spoke, he sounded like he really cared. But I knew deep down in my heart that he was glad she was dead. And since I didn’t have anyone else to turn to, and with the fear of ending up on the street, I had to swallow my pain, my heartache, and back out from testifying. So I grew up in isolation and resentment, apart from the few times I was allowed to visit Aunt Wu. Aunt Wu was Qing Han’s mom. She and my mom were friends, so she often felt sorry for me. However, she wasn’t the reason I always begged to visit the Qing residence. Qing Han was. From the first time I saw him, my heart had never settled. I always told myself that if it wasn’t him, then I didn’t want anyone else. Despite the fact that he had never said a word to me all those years, I never gave up. I was satisfied even if it just meant catching a glimpse of him. He was rare. So being in the same house as him was enough to make me happy. To be honest, he was the only thing that kept me going after my mom’s death. I shouldn’t even talk about my dad, who was a deadbeat in every sense of the word. I was twenty-one when Aunt Wu approached me. Even though I was grown up, my crush on Qing Han hadn’t faded one bit. “I know you love him. I’ve seen the way you look at him. Marry him and give him a child. No one will bully you again if this happens,” Aunt Wu said, looking at me. She was a very good woman who treated me with love and adoration. She wasn’t like everyone else who looked down on me. When I heard her words, my heart couldn’t stop racing. But still, I looked at her and bit my lower lip. “But Auntie… Han doesn’t like me. He…” “Han doesn’t like anyone, sweetheart,” Aunt Wu said with a sigh. “He goes days without talking to me, and I’m his mom. It’s just his nature. With time, he’ll open up.” “But…” “I’ll pay for your medical school if you marry him. Isn’t that what you’ve always wanted? I want it to be you who marries my son. I trust you. Can you do this for Auntie?” I knew she was almost certain I wanted to say yes. However, it was like she was trying to help me save face. So I slowly nodded my head. “I will marry him, Auntie.” I was so excited that evening that I couldn’t even eat. What I didn’t know was that Han had told his family he would marry just anyone and give them an heir to get them off his back. He didn’t care if the woman he married was me or just someone picked up from the street. While I was so excited on our wedding day, he didn’t even glance at me. He only appeared for a few minutes to exchange vows before he left. That night, I waited for him until four o’clock in the morning. He showed up drunk, dragged me off his bed, and into the guest bedroom. “You have no right to go to my room, do you understand?” he said, disgust all over his face. “All you have to do is give me a son and stay the hell out of my sight.” He pinned me on the bed and, even without any foreplay, took me from behind. He didn’t even blink when I cried in pain as he took away my virginity. From that day onward, the guest room became my room. And for a few weeks, I barely saw him. I only heard from his assistant that he had either gone on a business trip or was working late at the office. Still, I tried to please him. I would wait for him to come home, sometimes the whole night. I would prepare meals and send someone to deliver them to him at work, even though I clearly knew he had never tasted them once. The only reason I didn’t go there myself was because he had made it clear that I couldn’t distract him at work. And since I was naive and in love, I tried to obey him, hoping that he would one day open up and love me back, just like his mom had promised. Then, that day came when I realized I was pregnant. At first, I had mixed feelings. Then, immediately, those feelings were replaced with joy and excitement. All Han ever wanted was an heir. That was the only reason he had married me. It wasn’t like he hadn’t reminded me of that often. So I thought that finally, because I had given him a child, his attitude toward me would change. How wrong I was! When I went back to the living room and told Tuan Tuan that Mo Xuan was gone, he looked at me with concern.“Isn't Big Xuan happy because of Daddy?” he asked. We all knew how the two didn't get along.I shook my head at him. “No, sweetheart. He just decided to give us some space. He will be back,” I said. But I realized that I was comforting myself more than I was trying to comfort him. For the last four years, all I ever knew was Mo Xuan.So thinking that I could have lost him because of my decision made me feel really low.“Can we still talk to him?” Tuan Tuan asked, his brows a bit furrowed.“Of course,” I said. “We can call him anytime we want.”When Qing Han finally came, he was carrying boxes of food. He had brought dinner for us.Tuan Tuan, who had been waiting for him anxiously, seemed to tense up a little. He looked at me before looking back at Qing Han.And since Qing Han never missed anything, he furrowed his brows a little. “Is everything okay?” he asked.I sighed deeply,
Tuan was in a good mood after learning that he had done well.I watched him sit by the window, looking outside from time to time as though he was waiting for someone. He was also drawing something in his book, but he refused to let me see it. “Mama, this is not for you today. You can't see it now,” he said.I pouted, looking at him like I was offended. “What do you mean?” I asked. “Everything you used to draw was always for Mommy.”Tuan Tuan looked a bit guilty. He put down his book and wrapped his arms around me. “I know, Mama. But… this one is for Daddy…”I could only sigh. I felt good that he was happy having a dad, but I began wondering if it was a bad idea because he was abandoning me.“Okay, sweetheart,” I said, kissing his cheeks. “Make sure to call him Daddy when he comes back.”Tuan Tuan pursed his lips. “Can I?”“Yes, of course. He is your dad. You can call him whatever you want,” I said. I knew that he would be uneasy at first, but I thought he would get used to it with tim
After I was released from the hospital, Qing Han brought us home. He kept us company for a while and then left for some important meeting.Tuan Tuan followed him to the door. He had grown even more attached to Qing Han after the time they had spent together.I could tell from the way he was looking at him that he didn't want Qing Han to leave.Qing Han must have noticed it too. He bent down to his level and looked at him softly. “I'll be back before you know it,” he said.Tuan Tuan held out his pinky to him. “Promise?” he asked.Qing Han smiled and made a pinky promise with him. “I promise. And I won't be long,” he said.Tuan Tuan nodded, a sigh of relief appearing on his little face. “Okay.”“Mmh,” Qing Han said and ruffled his hair. Then he stood up to leave.“See you, Uncle Qing,” Tuan Tuan said, waving at him.“See you, Buddy,” Qing Han said. He seemed a little hesitant before walking away.Even after he had gotten in his car and left, Tuan Tuan stood by the door and watched.I si
Qing Han didn't leave the hospital again that day. I knew he was worried something would happen once he was gone.Mo Xuan came back with supper, but he didn't stay long, probably because of Qing Han.I could only sigh. I still wished that the two of them got along soon. “I'll see you tomorrow,” he said, patting Tuan Tuan's head. After he left, I looked at Qing Han. “You should talk to him,” I said.Qing Han raised his brows. “If I talk to him, I will end up telling him that you belong to me. We might fight, and I'm scared you will take his side again.”I sighed deeply. “What? I apologized for that…”I felt helpless. It was like he was never going to forget that I took Mo Xuan's side the other night. He wanted to speak, but Tuan Tuan shouted, pointing at the screen. “Mama, see! The bad woman is on TV!”Both Qing Han and I turned to look at the screen on the wall. And truly, we saw Chen Ran.Her face was swollen and her one eye bandaged. Reporters were running after her.“Is it true tha
Xiao Yu woke up in the morning with slight pain all over her body. First, her mind went blank when she noticed the light in the room. Her eyes instinctively moved to the clock on the wall. It was nine o'clock in the morning. Her eyes opened wide in fear.It was Monday morning. She was supposed to be at work already. She reached for her alarm clock on the bedside table. She hadn't switched off the alarm. Why didn't she hear it?She wanted to get up, even though she knew clearly that she wouldn't make it to work on time. But then, she noticed herself. She was naked, and her body…She instinctively turned to look at the bed beside her. She remembered what had happened between her boss and her at night. But the space beside her in the bed was empty. The bathroom door was open, so she knew he wasn't there.“Sh*t!“ She cursed, holding her aching head. “How could I have been so stupid?“She had stayed for so long without ever giving herself to a man. She had always turned them down. And just
Huo Ting Xiao sighed deeply when he saw her reaction. “It's late at night, and I think it's just about to rain. Will it hurt if I spend the night?”Xiao Yu coughed awkwardly the moment he asked the question. And it was only after she had calmed down that she quickly shook her head. “No! You can't."Huo Ting Xiao didn't seem offended. He just stood up, and Xiao Yu sighed inwardly, thinking that he was finally leaving. But to her surprise, he took steps towards her.She remembered the encounter in his office the other day and shrank back in fear. “Hey…”“What? I thought we had enough fun the other day,” Huo Ting Xiao said, backing her into a corner. And when she finally had nowhere to run to, a small smile appeared on his lips. “Why do you keep running from me? I don't eat people…”He stopped and sighed. “But I wouldn't mind eating a girl as beautiful as you…”“Sir…” Xiao Yu said, her face blushing. “You can't say such words. You have to respect yourself."He pinned her against the wall
It was late by the time I got to Yu’s place. I had texted her earlier to pick Tuan Tuan up from daycare because I knew I wouldn’t make it on time.Tuan Tuan had a pout on his face when he saw me. “You promised to pick me up, Mama,” he said in his childish voice.I sighed deeply and pulled him into
A painful lump formed in my throat the moment Qing Han began speaking. Since he thought he couldn’t hurt me enough, he had decided to target my friends.First, I knew that if he really investigated, he would find out that the report was forged. Then he would find out about Tuan Tuan.He was going t
I called Mo Xuan, and he admitted that he had Tuan Tuan. However, he was still mad at me for ignoring his calls the previous day, so he only gave me an address before hanging up. I was a little mad at him too. He hadn’t even said anything about coming to the country. How could he take Tuan Tuan a
…While Chen Xiu and Mo Xuan were having fun, Qing Han was standing by the window of the house across the street. His brother, Qing An Xin, was playing on his phone, still not sure why his brother had, who never liked it visit him, shown up at his house and gone straight to the window.“What are yo
