CHAPTER 31
Hans cupped her chin in his hands and ever so gently lifted her head to meet her gaze. There were dark circles under her eyes, she had not been sleeping well. But to Hans, she was still the most beautiful girl he had laid eyes upon many years ago.
“Suzanne,” he tucked a lock of hair that had fallen over her eye behind her ears, “I have faith in you. The Suzanne Summers I know is a strong woman and she’s gonna kick some serious ass when the time comes.”
Suzanne rolled her eyes and gave him a dorky smile. Hans reached out for her hands and brought them to his face, her hands were icy cold against his warm skin and he gave them a rub to give them some warmth.
“Tom’s extremely lucky to have you,” Hans said, his voice soft and gentle. He then proceeded to pull out a long silver necklace from under his high collared sweater and slipped it over Suzanne’s head.

D-Day-6It was past midnight and a lone figure wrapped in black fog stood atop a hill overlooking a snow-capped village below. All around, a blizzard began to pick up speed and the fierce wind blew at blinding speed, smashing everything in its way. D-Day-5Suzanne stood in the shower, allowing the scalding hot water to blast her skin. As the steam rose from the bathroom floor, lacing around her body and over her head, Suzanne scrubbed furiously at her palm trying to rid herself of the mark. In a matter of hours, the black mark had spread like cancer all the way up to her elbow and her once pale pinkish arm now looked as if it had been dipped in black ink, with black looking roots snaking all the way up her arm.Refuse us and you will surely die, the figure had whispered deep into her mind the other day. A great feast laid at the table, stretching from the head to the end of the long rectangular table with enough food to feed at least fifty people. It was a fusion of east meets west with a delectable stuffed turkey in the middle of the table, a hot piping pepperoni pizza next to it, followed by an aromatic shepherd's pie, steak and kidney pie, spicy kimchi stew, samgyeopsal served with barbequed pork strips wrapped with lettuce, perilla leaves and raw garlic kimchi. Thomas was already at the table, helping himself to a big pot of chicken curry. The twins were tucking into their food as well, one polishing off a plate of chocolate fudge brownies and the other digging into a combination of steamed basmati rice and fries. “You know, this feels a lot like the last supper,” Thomas said between mouthfuls. D-Day 4There was tension at the Alma Mater Home for the Aged. The head nurse had fled back home to be with her child upon hearing that a neighbour had succumbed to the mist’s attack hours earlier, leaving no one to man the lobby. All the other nurses were walking on eggshells, fearing that the mist would come for them next. How were they to protect the elderly when they themselves had no idea how to protect themselves?Bob the security guard had to barricade the entry and abandon his post to help out inside the nursing home.At that moment, he sat alone at the front desk, holding tightly to his baton, his legs curled up on the swivel chair. D-Day-3There would be no grand wedding. But it was fine with Suzanne and Tom. They had in fact opposed to having one. It did not seem right for them to celebrate when countless lives were lost by the minute.But the twins and Thomas were adamant about having a celebration.“Everything’s so bleak now, we can at least look forward to a joyous occasion with your wedding!” Thomas had pleaded, blinking at them like a little doe through his glasses.So Suzanne and Tom relented. All around the world, the black mist retreated, slithering back into the shadows, putting an end to the overwhelming thunderstorms and blizzards that terrified everyone. The skies were clear once more, much to the joy of the people and soon, many came out of hiding, snapping pictures of the cloudless skies and taking selfies, posting them on social media to proclaim the good news.Everyone around the world was celebrating, except for the people of Seoul, Korea. For up in their skies, the black mist appeared, looming over the city, sending every last person who dared to venture out earlier scampering for shelter.A young man and his sister peeked out from their apartment window and snapped a photo of the mist as it headed for the Gangnam. In a matter of minutes, the photo went viral, sending a tremor of terror down the spines of all who saw it, for, within the mist, a shadowy face could be seen.It was the face of the devil himself.***The banging
