Zoe swallowed.

“That only looks ordinary among normal couples.”

Nathaniel’s laugh rang out even louder, “We are not a normal couple.”

Zoe nodded her head, “You are indeed right, but we intend to convince the public otherwise. Isn’t it just right for me to know so much about you?”

“Ha-ha! I guess this is why they call you the great Zoe Beckett.”

“You are the only one who calls me the great Zoe Beckett.” Zoe retorted.

“That does not make it wrong.”

Zoe hid her eye-roll.

“I ---”

  • CONTRACTED TO MY EX-HUSBAND’S ENEMY    I thought you liked me

Heavy silence settled in the living room. Eclipse's jaw shifted, her teeth clenching for a moment, some visible internal argument playing out behind her eyes. Her shoulders finally dropped, the fight draining slowly out of her posture."You're right, Mr. Quest" she said finally, the words coming out stiff, clearly costing her something. "I'm sorry. I've spent the last week fielding calls from every brand that ever touched Zoe's name, watching people who claimed to respect her drop her the instant it became inconvenient” She shook her head, a tired sigh leaving her lips.Zoe clenched her fists tightly, refusing to say a word.Eclipse look moved her.Huge dark circles stood proudly underneath her eyes, and now that the fight was out of her, the adrenaline holding her straight also seeped out quietly.Zoe felt moved to hold Eclipse and guide her to rest. But she hesitated.Eclipse had just insulted Nathaniel and allowing one of her own to insult an important ally would make it okay fo

  • CONTRACTED TO MY EX-HUSBAND’S ENEMY    Pick your Enemy

Eclipse had not actually left.Zoe realized this only after she hung up the phone, her hands still faintly trembling, and found her assistant standing frozen, her laptop bag half slung over one shoulder, watching her with the sharpened attention of a woman who had heard enough of one side of a phone call to create a concluding statement."You told me thank you for staying loyal to you," Eclipse said before Zoe could speak, setting her bag back down on the console table with quiet finality. "I'm not here for only the good times, Zoe""Eclipse. That's enough, I appreciate your loyalty but it's not enough to drag you through this."Eclipse shook her head, placing her laptop bag on the marble counter set to separate the living room from the other living spaces. It's marble color glistened in the light, the little black dots on it twinkling in the light.Eclipse snorted in annoyance. She palmed her face for one second."You went pale, Zoe. Actually pale, the kind of pale I have never once

  • CONTRACTED TO MY EX-HUSBAND’S ENEMY    Do not leave your house

"Not at all." Eclipse's answer came immediate and firm, no hesitation at all. " I am saying the world will punish you for reacting even when the reaction is completely justified, and I hate that""I am furious on your behalf, and I am also the person whose job it is to keep the lights on in your business while you figure out how to be a different kind of Zoe Beckett than the one Aurelle signed a contract with." She exhaled slowly, some of the fire draining out of her posture. "I'm not angry at you, Zoe. I'm angry at how fast and how cruelly all of this happened, and I don't have anywhere else to put that anger except into fixing what I can still fix."Zoe reached across the space between them and squeezed Eclipse's hand, an unfamiliar gesture between them, the two of them having spent years keeping their relationship strictly professional despite genuine mutual respect underneath it."Thank you for staying loyal through this," Zoe said quietly. "I know it would have been easier to

  • CONTRACTED TO MY EX-HUSBAND’S ENEMY    Aurelle

Eclipse arrived at the house without calling first, which was, in itself, the first sign that something had gone badly wrong.Zoe heard the car in the driveway before she heard the front door, and by the time she made it downstairs, Eclipse was already standing in the middle of the living room in yesterday's clothes, her laptop bag still slung across her body. Her expression was particularly flat and dull.Zoe sighed. It was how Eclipse looked whenever had rehearsed how to deliver bad news the entire drive over and still hadn't found a version that didn't sound catastrophic."Aurelle pulled out this morning ." Eclipse said, no greeting, no preamble, straight to the wound the way she always delivered things that mattered. "Their legal team sent the termination notice at eight, cc'ing me and their regional director both, which tells you exactly how little they cared about softening it."Zoe felt the floor tilt slightly beneath her.She kept her face carefully still, a habit worn smoot

  • CONTRACTED TO MY EX-HUSBAND’S ENEMY    Wars I didn’t register for

Zoe’s phone rang at exactly six fifteen the next morning, dragging her out of the shallow, restless doze she had finally drifted into."Miss Beckett." Joey Cox's voice was clipped and businesslike, the voice of a man who had learned early in his career that sympathy cost time he didn't have to spare. Zoe breathed, the restless sleep disappearing from her eyes quickly."I have information.”“I would hope so. That’s what I’m paying to get.” Zoe replied, sitting up in bed, her back against the bright wooden headboards.“Can I get the information, now?” Zoe asked, her patience considerably lower than her sleep.“You need to sit down.” Joey’s voice pierced through her phone.Zoe frowned.“Why?”“A couple of it is -- err -- less comfortable for a lady of your standing."Zoe chuckled, her chuckle dark and humorless like the blackout curtains blocking out the sunrise from illuminating her room.“You’d be surprised what ladies of my standing do, Mr. Cox. Now, are you going to give me the res

  • CONTRACTED TO MY EX-HUSBAND’S ENEMY    Unknown number

Zoe’s fingers shook, the phone slipping from her grasp and landing with a soft thud on her dresser. She picked her phone back, her eyes roving over the message, reading it and re-reading it, trying to tell her brain that it’s spam. Her brain did not co-operate.‘I know what you're planning.’She typed back, her fingers feeling heavy with each letter it touched, ‘who is this?’She deleted it. Zoe typed again‘what do you want?’She deleted that too. Every version felt like handing whoever was on the other end a small, useful piece of her, a reaction to study and a crack to widen to whoever was on the other end of the phone. In the end Zoe typed nothing at all.She set the phone down on her dresser, screen still glowing faintly in the dark room, and pressed both palms flat against her own face, breathing slowly through fingers that smelled faintly of Chloe's vanilla hand cream from the hug goodbye an hour earlier. Her first instinct was to call Nathaniel. Her second instinct, arrivin
