NOVA

I stare down at the heavy blue cover in my hands, the cold cardboard pressing through my shirt. My head is spinning, but I force a bitter breath out of my nose.

"You're overthinking this, Nova," I whisper under my breath, shaking my head as if to dislodge Caleb’s voice from my brain. "He probably just dropped it. Or he was carrying too many things. He doesn't give a shit about you. He hates you."

"Overthinking what?"

The deep voice cuts through the stillness of the kitchen.

My heart leaps into my throat, my eyes locking on the floor for a second before I slowly look up.

Enzo is leaning against the kitchen doorway, his massive frame blocking the entrance. His arms are crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on me.

I stare at him, not blinking, not moving. I just hold his gaze.

"What?" Enzo asks softly, tilting his head.

"You threw my book," I say. "You threw it right next to the trash."

"Did I?"

"Yes, you did!" I lift the heavy textbook, pointing to where it had been lying on the linoleum. "Which means you didn't actually need it. You just came upstairs under the pretext that you did."

Enzo’s face doesn't shift. There's not even a twitch. He just looks at the dark window behind me, then back to my face.

"Is he gone?" he asks.

I swallow hard, frustration rising in my chest. "Enzo, that's not what I asked! That's not what I said!"

He finally moves, taking a slow step into the kitchen. "And I asked if the jackass is gone."

"Yes! He's gone!" I yell, though I quickly drop my voice, darting a nervous glance toward the hallway leading to the living room. "He went out the back door. But stop dodging the question!"

Enzo stops a few feet away from me. He looks down at the blue textbook in my hands, then up into my eyes.

"You can seriously be asking me that question right now?" he asks. "After everything you've done?"

My jaw tightens. A sting flares behind my eyes, but I refuse to let him turn this around on me.

I turn around and slam the heavy textbook onto the granite counter behind me. I square my shoulders and turn back to face him, glaring up into his cold face.

"Don't bring that into this!" I snap. "Don't you dare bring that up right now! This is my textbook, Enzo! It's expensive, I need it for class, and I can't just get a new one that easily! You carried it all the way down the stairs just to throw it on the floor like it was trash!"

Enzo just shrugs, a nonchalant, infuriating lift of one broad shoulder.

"Accidents happen," he says.

"It wasn't an accident!" I step closer to him, my fists clenching at my sides. "You didn't come into my room because you needed to borrow my textbook, did you?"

He stares down at me, the silence stretching between us so long.

"No," Enzo says flatly. "I didn't."

"Then why did you come up there, Enzo? Why did you open my door?"

"I thought you were fucking Caleb."

I shudder. My forehead creases into a deep frown as I glare at him.

"There," Enzo sneers. "You wanted the truth, Nova? You heard it."

"Why does it even matter to you?!" I shout softly, as I gesticulate between us. "What does it matter to you if I fuck him?!"

"Because if you're gonna be a whore," he growls coldly, "then do it elsewhere. Not in this house. Not under your parent's roof, and certainly not while I'm here."

I wince. A burning heat rushes to my cheeks, but I force myself to stand my ground. I swallow down the humiliation, nodding slowly as I digest the venom in his voice.

"Right," I whisper. "Right. Of course."

I take a breath, looking up at him through my lashes. "Caleb said you were jealous."

Enzo pauses. Then, a sudden laugh erupts from his chest.

"What's so funny?" I demand, my cheeks burning hotter.

"You think I'm jealous?" Enzo asks, leaning down slightly so his face is inches from mine, his eyes gleaming. "You actually standing there, looking at me, thinking I'm jealous of you and Caleb?"

"I don't know what to think!" I shove at his chest, though he doesn't budge an inch. "You're acting crazy! You barged into my room, you threatened to tell Noah, you threw my book on the floor... I don't know what to think with you anymore!"

"Then let me make it painfully simple for you," Enzo whispers. "Just think that I hate your guts. Think that I despise the ground you walk on, and that I'm only tolerating your presence because I don't have a damn choice."

I stare at him, my heart breaking in quiet, jagged pieces inside my chest. I swallow hard, fighting back the sting of tears, and nod.

"Okay," I whisper softly. "Okay."

Enzo doesn't move away. He stays hovering over me, his gaze scanning my face, tracing the curve of my forehead, my nose, and finally settling on my mouth.

"Did you two kiss?" Enzo asks suddenly.

The question hangs in the air, unanswered.

I blink, caught completely off guard. "What?"

"You heard me," Enzo says, his eyes dropping to my lips again before snapping back up to meet my gaze. "Did you two kiss in that wardrobe?"

I grip the edge of the granite counter behind me, my knuckles turning white. "He... he tried to."

Enzo’s eyes narrow into slits. "And did you kiss him?"

I look up at him. "Yes..." I whisper.

"I said I'm not."He leans against the kitchen doorway, crossing his arms over his chest.I give him a look. "Okay, fine. Maybe I am a little mad at him.""Why?""You know why. NOVAI trace the grain of the wooden coffee table with the tip of my finger. The anger that flared in my chest a moment ago is slowly being replaced by a cold, sinking feeling."If she sends it," I say quietly, not looking up, "it won't just be between you and me, Enzo. If she sends it to Noah... or to my parents...""I know," he interrupts. "I've already thought about that. Believe me, it's all I've been thinking about since I walked out of that room.""And?" I finally look at him. "And I'll deal with it," he says, his jaw clenching. "If she sends it to your brother, I'll take whatever he has to dish out. I'll take a punch, I'll take a broken nose... hell, I'll take whatever he wants. But I am not going to let her ruin my promise to you. I am not going to let her dictate who I talk to, who I care about, or what I do with my life."Well, I should take his word. He does sound sincere. Oh God. It’s terrifying how easily he can make me believe him, even when I'm not supposed to, given t

ENZOI storm out of the living room before I do something I'll regret. Something like smashing every fucking thing in this house. My mother's laughter follows me to the stairs."Don't forget to thank me when you're playing in the NHL, Lorenzo!"I flip her off without turning around."Such a lovely gesture!" she calls after me.God, I fucking hate her. I make it halfway up the stairs before the realization of what just happened hit me. I squeeze my eyes shut.Okay... I'm not seriously worried about what her reaction would be right? That's fucking right. I'm worried about what her brother's reaction would be when he listens to that recording. I practically tore his sister apart with every disgusting word. But then... I'd said those things to protect her, right? To make my mother believe there was nothing between us. And now my mother has a recording. A fucking recording.I pull my phone from my pocket and open Nova's contact. My thumb hovers over the call button. What am I supposed to

ENZO“No, you listen to me, you miserable...”I bite my tongue hard, my chest heaving like I’ve just played three consecutive periods of brutal overtime. I can’t do this here. Not with her standing in the entryway looking at me like I’m a malfunctioning machine.I turn on my heel, shoving past her, and storm up the stairs two at a time, leaving her screeching complaints against the walls.Once I hit the second-floor landing, I pull my phone out of my pocket, my thumb swiping. I can still remember what I told Nova downstairs. What we were going to do before my mother arrived unannounced. I open a browser tab. How to be good to her?A bunch of sappy, useless relationship blog links pop up. I stare at the screen, let out a scoff at some generic advice about "active listening and emotional availability," and delete the search. I try again. How to be a boyfriend.I scroll through a few more articles until one headline actually makes me snort. Signs you're failing as a boyfriend. Yeah, well

ENZOWhat is she doing here? That's what I think first when I sight my mother glaring at Nova. It's nothing new. It's been established that she doesn't like Nova. She doesn't care much for Noah but Nova... we all know she dislikes the girl. Then after the recording stuff... her hatred for the girl grew.My mother’s eyes... icy, and sharp, takes in the scene. First, they land on me, holding Nova’s hand tightly in mine. Then her gaze drags over to Nova. She takes in her damp hair, and the plain black shirt swallowing her frame... my shirt.I feel Nova flinch beside me, as she tries to yank her fingers out of my grip. Panic. She’s terrified. I don't let go immediately she tries to get her hand off. I tighten my grip, letting her know I’ve got her, before letting my fingers slide away."Mom," I say, stepping between them. I square my shoulders, blocking Nova from my mother's line of sight. "You said you weren't coming back until Sunday.""Evidently, I came home early," she replies. She do

NOVA The sun is scorching, shimmering, but that is the last thing on my mind.My palms are slick with sweat. My stomach is doing dangerous, acrobatic flips. And my brain? My brain has left me completely, leaving behind a mess.Yeah, I'm a mess. I'm a panicking mess.We haven't spoken since last night. Not a text. Not a glance across the hall at school. Nothing.I wouldn't even be standing here right now if Noah hadn't literally cornered me against my locker during fourth period, pinning me with his protective older brother glare and telling me, “Go see Enzo after school.”Easy for him to say. He didn't make a life-altering, utterly terrifying deal with his best friend to pretend to be a couple while secretly harboring feelings.I stand on the front porch of Enzo’s house, staring at the brass doorbell as if it's a venomous snake. I've been standing here for approximately five full minutes, my inner monologue screaming every possible worst-case scenario. What if his parents are home? T
