Rhaena's POV

Our eyes met and I felt that familiar jolt of electricity run through me. He had changed into dark jeans and a fitted navy blue button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, showing off the muscles and the light dusting of dark hair on his arms. The top two buttons were undone, giving me a glimpse of his chest. His dark hair was still slightly damp from his shower and pushed back from his face. His green eyes caught the candlelight and seemed to glow.

He looked unfa

Rhaena's POVWithout a word he slid one arm under my knees and the other around my back, lifting me clean off the floor as if I weighed nothing. I wrapped my arms around his neck, heart pounding hard against his chest, as he carried me down the short hallway toward my bedroom. The apartment was quiet except for the sound of his steady footsteps and the soft rustle of my dress against his shirt. I could feel the heat of his body through the fabric. I could feel how tightly he was holding me, like he was afraid I might disappear if he loosened his grip even a little. He kicked the bedroom door open with his foot and laid me down on the bed. The mattress dipped under my weight. Before I could catch my breath he was already over me, mouth finding mine again in a deep, claiming kiss while his hands pushed my dress up over my hips. His tongue slid against mine, slow and thorough, tasting me like he had all the time in the world and intended to use every second of it.“Alessio—”“Shh.” His v

Rhaena's POVI reached over and rested my hand gently on his forearm. The muscle under my palm was rigid. “I didn’t ask him to sit with us. I didn’t ask him to give me his number again.”“I know.” Some of the tension finally eased from his shoulders as he turned to look at me. His eyes were dark, still stormy. “I know you didn’t. It’s not about you doing anything wrong. It’s watching another man touch you, kiss you, act like he has some kind of claim, and having to sit there and smile through it like it doesn’t matter. Like you’re not already mine.”I kept my hand on his arm, thumb stroking slowly along the tense muscle. “For what it’s worth, the only person’s touch I actually want is yours. You know that.”Something in his expression softened, but the intensity didn’t leave his eyes. He turned his hand over and laced his fingers through mine, holding on tighter than usual.“I do know,” he said, voice rougher now. “But knowing doesn’t make it easier when I have to watch it happen. Whe

Rhaena's POVI picked up my wine glass and took a slow sip, my heart pounding, already dreading - and if I was honest with myself, some small, treacherous part of me already anticipating - exactly how the rest of tonight was going to go once we were finally, blessedly alone.Dinner wound down gradually, the plates cleared away, the conversation settling into that easy, winding-down rhythm that comes near the end of a long meal. Massimo had rejoined the flow of the table effortlessly, charming Dove with stories about his family's vineyard, trading business anecdotes with Julian that revealed an unexpected overlap in some of their professional circles. He was, I had to admit despite everything, genuinely good company - the kind of man who made a table more fun just by being at it.Which made it that much harder to sit there feeling Alessio's tension radiating beside me for the better part of two hours. Finally, after the dessert plates had been cleared and the last of the wine finished,

Rhaena's POV"Fair enough," Julian said, holding up his hands in mock surrender, clearly deciding not to push further. "I respect a man who knows when to keep his cards close."I kept my eyes on my plate, focusing very intently on cutting a piece of fish that didn't particularly need cutting, aware of the way Dove's gaze had sharpened slightly at Alessio's answer, something curious and searching in her expression that I didn't love.I was saved from having to think too hard about it by the sound of footsteps approaching our table, and a voice - warm, accented, and instantly, jarringly familiar - saying both our names at once."Rhaena. Alessio."I looked up, and my fork actually clattered slightly against my plate in surprise.Massimo.He was standing at the edge of our table, dressed impeccably in a dark navy suit, his dark eyes bright with genuine delight at having spotted us. The last time I'd seen him had been at the wedding, at the rehearsal dinner, pressing yet another business c

Rhaena's POV"Figuring things out how?" I pressed gently, genuinely curious now, wanting to understand what exactly I was up against, what exactly Alessio's history with this woman still meant to her.Dove was quiet for a moment, turning her wine glass slowly by the stem, watching the liquid catch the candlelight."I had something once," she said finally, her voice softer now, more honest than the polished, easy tone she'd been using all evening. "Something really good, actually. And I let it slip away because I thought there'd always be time to figure it out later. That we could just keep circling back to each other whenever it was convenient, and eventually the timing would just... work itself out."Her eyes flicked to Alessio again, brief but unmistakable this time, and I felt my stomach tighten."But I think," she continued, "I'm still trying to let go of the idea that it might still happen. Even though I know, logically, that it probably won't. Some habits are just hard to break.

Rhaena's POVWe settled into an easy rhythm after the wine was poured, the conversation drifting comfortably between the four of us. Dove had a natural gift for hosting - even at someone else's table, in a restaurant none of us owned, she somehow made everyone feel included, drawing each person into the conversation in turn."So tell me about you," Dove said, turning her attention fully to me, propping her chin on her hand, genuinely curious. "Where did you grow up? I feel like I know almost nothing about you beyond finance and Ravelli Corp.""Right here in the city, actually," I said, twirling a strand of pasta onto my fork. "Just a different side of it than most people at this table are probably used to. My mom raised me mostly on her own after my dad passed, and money was tight for a long time. We moved around a lot within the same few neighborhoods, always chasing better rent.""I had no idea," Dove said, something genuinely warm crossing her face, no trace of pity in it, just int
