Rhaena’s POV

My stomach dropped. I froze. The anger that bubbled up inside me was immediate and fierce. His words weren’t just careless—they were cruel. My blood felt hot, my fists curled almost without me noticing.

I peeked through the doorway, my eyes narrowing as my stomach twisted. He was talking about my mum. About her. The words sank into me like icy water, cold and shocking, and my heart started to pound so hard I thought it might burst.

Alessio’s voice stayed calm, almost bored, like he

Rhaena’s POVSandro came closer to the bed. He looked older in the hospital light, but his voice was steady.“We could never hate you for choosing love,” he said. “And I could never hate you for loving my son.”I stared at him.“Even like this? Even with how it looks?”“It looks complicated,” he said. “That is true. You are not children. You did not grow up in the same house as brother and sister. You met as adults. What you feel is not a crime. What that man did to you was.”Mum wiped her face with the back of her hand.“I almost lost you today,” she said. “Do you understand that? I sat on a plane thinking I would have to bury my only child. I do not have room left to punish you for being alive and in love.”I started crying then. I could not help it. It was not loud. It just came, hot and helpless.Mum leaned in and kissed my forehead.“You have been carrying this by yourself,” she said. “You do not have to anymore.”Sandro put his hand on the rail of the bed.“Alessio is my son,” h

Rhaena’s POVAfter Alessio left to answer his phone, my mum sat by my side. She still looked scared. She could not stop touching me. My hair. My cheek. The edge of the blanket. Like if she stopped, I would disappear forever.I still could not believe I had made it out alive. The fire. The smoke. The chair. Jake’s smile when he said if he could not have me, no one else would. All of it felt close enough to touch and far enough that it might have been a nightmare.Alessio had found me in time.Even with the burns, even with the ache in my chest when I breathed, I was alive. That was the most important thing. I did not know if my mum would have been able to survive losing me. Looking at her now, I did not think she would have.My eyes went to Sandro. He stood near the window, still in travel clothes, his hands in his pockets like he did not know what to do with them. There was still fear in his eyes. Not as loud as my mother’s, but it was there. The kind of fear that stays after the wors

Alessio’s POVI shook my head, because the words still did not feel big enough for what was in my chest.“I would not have been able to live without you,” I said. “If you had not come back, I would have followed you. I mean that. I refuse to live in a world where you are gone.”Her weak fingers touched my face.“No, Alessio.”“It is the honest truth,” I said. “I spent years pretending I did not need anyone. Then you happened. I am not going back to that empty life. I refuse to live without you.”“Then stay,” she whispered. “Just stay. That is all I want.”“I am staying.”I kissed her hand again and held it against my cheek. For a few seconds there was no hospital, no fire, no Jake. There was only her voice in that quiet room, telling me she loved me.Then the door burst open.Moirraine came in first, still in travel clothes, her face pale and wet. My father was right behind her. They both stopped for half a second when they saw me so close to the bed, her hand in mine. Then Moirraine

Alessio’s POVIn the hallway, the air felt too cold. I took out my phone with hands that still had soot in the lines of my palms and texted my father. The doctor said she is stable. Smoke in her lungs. Burns not as bad as they first thought. She is sedated. I saw her. She is alive.I stared at the screen. No reply.I assumed they were landing soon.I found the doctor near the nurses’ station.“I want her moved,” I said. “The best room you have. Private. Quiet. Whatever she needs. The best care. I don’t care what it costs.”He looked at me for a moment.“She is already receiving excellent care.”“I believe you,” I said. “I still want her comfortable. Please.”Something in my face must have ended the argument. He nodded.“We’ll arrange it.”They moved her within the hour. The new room was larger, dimmer, with a window that looked out over the city and a chair that did not feel like a punishment. I followed the bed the whole way. When they settled her again, I sat down and took her hand

Alessio’s POVI don’t know how long I sat outside Rhaena’s room. Time had stopped meaning anything. The hallway lights stayed too bright. People walked past with coffee and clipboards like the world was still normal. My world was behind that door. When the doctor finally came toward me, I was on my feet before he finished saying my name.“How is she?” I asked. “Please. Just tell me.”He stopped in front of me. His face was tired, but not grim, and that was the first thing that let me breathe.“She inhaled a lot of smoke,” he said. “That was the most dangerous part. Her burns are not as severe as they first looked. We treated them. She is sedated right now so her body can rest. She is stable.”Stable.The word hit me so hard I had to put a hand on the wall.“She’s going to be all right?” I asked.“She has a fight ahead of her,” he said. “Smoke in the lungs is no small thing. But yes. She is going to recover. She was lucky someone got her out when they did.”I nodded, because if I tried

Alessio’s POVThey met me halfway. I did not hand her over until they had the stretcher ready. Even then my arms did not want to let go. Her weight had become the only thing keeping me standing.“Are you family?” one of them asked.“Yes,” I said. I did not care what kind. “I am going with her. Do not ask me to stay behind.”They put an oxygen mask on her face. Her lashes did not move. I climbed into the ambulance and sat where they told me, my hand around hers, soot on my shirt, the city flying past the small windows. Her fingers were cold. I rubbed my thumb over her knuckles like I could push heat back into her.“Stay with me,” I whispered. “You do not get to leave me. Do you understand? I just found you. I just told you the truth. You do not get to go. I waited my whole life to feel this, and I will not lose it in one morning.”The medic worked around me. He asked if I knew her name.“Rhaena,” I said. “Her name is Rhaena.”He asked how long she had been inside.“I don’t know. Too lo
