The Game Begins
Hadrian was feeling dejected when he went to his garden to tend to it. He looked around and he thought that the gardener did a good job. This should have made him happy, but his chest feels heavy that he could not even smile. Finding no motivation to do what he came to do, he just sat on the bench looking at the trees and then he stood up to walk. After a while he found himself in the fountain, he blinked and looked around wondering what he was doing there.
‘Ah, there you are.’ A familiar voice called out and Hadrian turned to see Albert approaching him. ‘I was delayed for a bit, sorry to have kept you waiting.’

Henrik paced back and forth waiting for news of Catherine’s whereabouts; agitated at his men’s slow response, he kept asking his butler of news from the search party, he gave orders after orders and after more than a half hour later, the soldiers that came and he received reports from soldiers who were scurrying in and out of the office. Valdemar pulled the trigger of the gun he grabbed from the guard, aiming intently at Catherine and as he shot, Hadrian went between him and Catherine and the bullet hit Hadrian’s left chest and he fell on the ground, he pointed the gun at Hadrian once more and shot him a second time, this time, hitting him in his left shoulder. The guards pinned Valdemar down and kicked the gun aside, Albert pulled out his sword and is about to lunge at the duke, but Ivan stopped him. ‘You cannot do anything rash; our position is already sensitive as it is.’ Ivan told Albert who’s fuming in anger. ‘Hadrian!’ Catherine shouted and kneeled beside Hadrian who is bleeding on the floor. She carefully cradled his head as the others scrambled to call for a doctor. ‘Hadrian, please wake up!’ Hadrian huffed and coughed. They looked closely at his chest and curiously there was not a drop of blood on his clothes. He winced at the pain on his shoulder and knew he was shot there.

Hadrian rode out to meet his uncle who has camped in the border of his own kingdom. The older King met his nephew with a smile and wide arms. King Wilhelm stands a head taller than Hadrian, a great man with a muscular build. ‘Hadrian, my boy!’ King Wilhelm greeted Hadrian smiling widely. ‘I was expecting you to send a messenger, but here you are! The emperor himself! I trust you bring news?’ ‘I have uncle, and hopefully we are to meet King Henrik tomorrow.’ Hadrian answered after dismounting his horse.

A guard opened the gates to the Amalienborg Palace to let the King of Prussia and his entourage in. Catherine rose to her feet upon the sight of the young emperor and rushed over to meet them. Hadrian stopped his horse with a grimace on his face, she immediately saw the red blotch on his shoulder. His wound has reopened due to the strain of the several hours long horse ride. A young boy ran through the halls of Schönbrunn Palace chased by a man wearing black. The boy shouted happily, playing as he goes. Henrik was pleased when he realized Catherine’s prowess in diplomacy, he knew that a kingdom such as theirs is much too small for her. He looked over at Hadrian and figured that she would be great in an Empire as vast as Austria. He was angry when she started to speak, but when Grand Chancellor Reventlow made him realize what the cost of his stubbornness is, he started to appreciate her more. Hadrian rushed back to Austria without waiting for the rest of his entourage. He stood on a vantage point over-looking Vienna, wearing commoner’s clothing at the behest of Albert. ‘Have you gotten word from Lady Csilla yet?’ Hadrian asked Albert who is standing beside him. ‘Nothing yet.’ The Archduke answered. ‘I have sent the message to her two days ago. We should have received her reply already.’ Hadrian clenches his fists tightly. He wanted to go there and look for his siblings himself. ‘Josef, Marianna…’ he thought, sighing heavily and casting his eyes at the sky. ‘Please be safe.’ Albert looked at his cousin and then at the city below. From the information he received, Vienna was sieged two days earlier and it was staged by some of the Hungarian officials aided by the Ottoman Turks. Five years earlier, Hadrian sat on his coffee table beside the gardens in Blauer Hof with a book in his hand. He carefully sipped the tea from his cup and cast his eyes left and right.
