Calmness in the Face of Death

"I'm so glad you love your sister so much, Winston. I'm proud to have a son like you." Mom held my hand affectionately as her eyes reddened. "You've always been sensible, and you know how to care for Evelyn. I'm so touched that you've even given up your new place for her so she can have a safe pregnancy."

Her rough fingers brushed against the back of my hand affectionately, but my blood ran cold.

Evelyn Black and I were fraternal twins. She was sweet and obedient, while I'd always been rebellious. Evelyn had married Chris Lane upon Mom's advice after graduating from high school.

I still remembered how, in my past life, Mom had pointed at me and called me a heartless ingrate. She'd also said I was a piece of trash who couldn't stand seeing other people being happier than me and that was why I couldn't find a wife.

If not for that, I probably would've continued to believe that she loved me. I would've willingly allowed my family to exploit me.

I pulled my hand away silently and excused myself to the kitchen, saying that I needed to cook Evelyn a nutritious meal. After putting the food into a container, Mom approached me. "You must be tired after all this cooking—I'll take the food to her.

"She's really picky now; your cooking is all she'll have. Thank you for putting in so much effort for her, sweetie. I'll give you a huge present once she's given birth."

I sneered to myself. A huge present, huh? I wouldn't dare accept. I didn't want to risk losing my life again.

There were five hours to go before Evelyn jumped off a building.

In my past life, when I'd hurried to her, I'd seen her lying spread-eagled on the grass outside the apartment. Blood had pooled around her.

Her husband, Chris Lane, had grabbed me by the collar and called me an devil who couldn't stand seeing others being happy. He said I was an inhumane monster who insulted and hit Evelyn daily.

He also said she'd told him that I'd brainwashed her, telling her she was nothing but a social parasite and a pig that could only pop out babies. She had to have been heartbroken and destroyed inside to have jumped off the building.

I'd been stunned upon seeing her broken body. That was when Mom had arrived. I'd thought we would throw our arms around each other and cry, but all I got was a hard slap from her. My head had spun from the force, and I'd tasted blood in my mouth.

"I can't believe you killed your sister! Did I raise you to be a murderer? How could you have turned out to be so inhumane? You acted like a good guy at home and cooked for Evelyn, yet you were secretly tormenting her every day. Did I do something in a past life for you to come after me like this in this lifetime?

"Kill me, then! Why did you kill your sister? She was pregnant, for heaven's sake! God, how do you expect me to continue living without her?"

Mom had fallen to the ground and shouted at the top of her lungs while sobbing. The crowd had pointed fingers at me.

Chris had grabbed me by the hair and dragged me to Evelyn's body, forcing me to get on my knees before her. Evelyn's lifeless gaze seemed to have been asking me why I'd killed her.

My heart was shattered, and I had nowhere to voice my grievances. I was the one who'd treated her like a princess, terrified that anything would happen to her while she was pregnant!

When the police arrived, I'd harbored a sliver of hope. However, the forensic doctor had determined that Evelyn had been physically abused prior to her death. There had been marks on her neck from being strangled, and she had bruises all over her body. There were even traces of an abortion pill in her stomach.

The crowd had gasped at this and started throwing nasty insults my way.

"God, is he even human? How could he strangle his own sister? Is he a sociopath?"

"Karma is going to get back at him for this. Would a normal human being force their sister to take an abortion pill? He must've done it out of jealousy! He's a freak!"

"Exactly! He killed his sister because he couldn't find a wife! Hurry up and arrest that inhumane monster, officers! Sentence him to death!"

The crowd had grown more agitated. Some of them had even grabbed the eggs and vegetables they had and thrown them at me. Even children had thrown rocks at me, calling me a murderer.
