Chapter 1

Scholarship Student

Jessica's POV

"Finally in Camblok," I yelled a little bit too loudly. The people around me turned their gaze to me, I lowered my head immediately, adjusting my dress. That was definitely so embarrassing but I was genuinely excited. A poor girl like me was finally blessed with a scholarship to the most expensive school in the city.

My mouth was wide open, as my eyes brushed through every building and everything. I felt ecstatic. Students flocked in and out like a herd of goats from every direction. They were all dressed exotically, this school wasn't my regular standard.

It was a university owned by one of the state's richest men. I got a free scholarship, so I had to keep a low head here. I heard rich kids bite hard if you crossed their path.

My attention was fixed on the massive glass buildings and aesthetic cafeteria that I didn't hear the roar of an engine behind me.

SCREECH!

A red black sports car swerved around me, slightly avoiding hitting me. The car halted to a stop just inches from my knees. I froze in an instant, my first day at school and I was already signing up for death? My heart felt like it was going to drop off from my body.

The car door swung open, and a guy stepped out, his eyes blood shot with anger. He was tall, with bold features. Broad chest and perfectly blue eyes, clear enough to even see it from a distance. His hair long enough to cover his eyes but never did.

He looked me from head to toe, like he was scanning me for faults. His lip curled into a smirk.

"I see, you are trying to get yourself killed," he barked. I cowered my head, clenching on the hem of my gown tightly. "From the way you are dressed, you are here for free studies. You truly look exceptionally ugly. Get out of the way."

I didn't say a word. He quickly got into his car and brushed past me, I held my bag tightly. Was it that obvious I was a scholarship student? I looked at my red long skirt and the green top my mum had bought for me. This was my best outfit, I stared back at the other kids like me. They were dressed way different and stylishly. I hope I don't get bullied on campus too, I really suffered a lot in high school.

I got to my room. It was a well-furnished room with two separate beds. I was grateful I had only one roommate, I looked at her expensive perfumes and makeup she had laid on her makeup table. Her whole space was radiating in purple, I guessed that was her favorite color. I hoped she was nice.

Immediately, I jumped on the bed sluggishly. "Jessica, just focus on one thing: your studies," I said to myself.

Suddenly, the door burst open. "Hey roomie," a tall, slender girl just like me smiled. Her short blonde hair was carefully permed in a bob style. She was dressed in a really tiny purple leather skirt and a see-through top, almost revealing her nipples.

Before I could even adjust my glasses, she lunged at me on the bed, squeezing me into a tight hug. Her face beamed with excitement, it felt like she had known me for ages.

It felt awkward, but I wrapped my arms around her, leaning in for a hug too.

She pulled back a second later. "Hey, I am Brenda, and you?"

"I... I am Jess... Jessica," I stammered.

"Aww, shy type, I get it. You will blend well with me, I am a social freak," she laughed out loud, heading for her mirror. She sat down in front of it, quickly wiping off her heavy make up. She looked like the perfect Barbie goth girl.

"There is a party tonight, do you wanna come?" she asked.

"No... no, I don't do parties. I have never been to one," I stuttered.

"Hmm, you are definitely coming with me. We are leaving in three hours."

A party? I had never partied before. I had read books all my life, even when the boys I had a crush on went to prom, I didn't go. The truth was I had never been invited to a party. I was that student who was always left behind on the fun things, but suddenly now, for the first time in my life, I was being invited to a party. A side of me leaped in joy, but I was honestly too nervous.

Does this mean I had finally been recognized? I mean, no one my age had ever given me a warm hug, and my roommate just did. I should forget about the mean jerk that almost killed me. I have a feeling my life was going to take a mind-blowing turn.

"You really want me to come with you?" I whispered. Brenda turned around again, her eyes scanning me from up to down.

"You are the scholarship girl, aren't you?" she asked.

I nodded my head gently. "You have probably read too much all through. I heard only one student was accepted for a scholarship. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so let's go."

She stood up from her seat, heading to my bed. Her eyes carefully searching through my clothes that I had strewn on the bed in an attempt to fold them.

"Nah... this won't do," she shook her head in disappointment. "I will give you something to wear. On this campus, it is eat or be eaten, and my friend, with these clothes, you are about to get chopped." She raised her hand, demonstrating how I would get chopped on the cutting table.

My heart almost dropped out of my body to the floor, I didn't think much about this while I was applying for a scholarship. Would I also be bullied here too? To top it all I was a skinny girl with ugly features who can't see without her dorky glasses.

Suddenly I recalled the memories of my high school life. I clenched the sheets of my bed tightly. My heart hammering against my ribs, as I recalled all the torture I had gone through.

I was always the girl who maintained a smiling face, because there was nothing I could do. I suffered through several trips down the stairs, food bath, physical and emotional abuse. If my high school life repeated itself here, I would definitely run back home, maybe join my mum in her local cafeteria.

Nah..no need to wait for the public disgrace. I should run back home now.
