We sat down to eat lunch together, and again I'd prepared us something. It was yet another attempt of mine to make myself seem worth keeping, and Icaan moaned in delight as soon as he tucked into the food.

"You can definitely handle food well," he replied. "Did you work in some kind of space cafe or something?"

"No. I waitressed on a planet for a while before I got into space, but I was never allowed near the kitchen. Always out front dealing with customers and taking food and drinks back and forth. One of those massive open area ones where they order at the table and everything is brought to them by a person dressed up."

He nodded as if he could picture what I meant, but I knew I didn't want to talk about me.
