Chapter 5

Author: Kaching
The crisp ringtone sounded unusually clear in the dead silence of the showroom. Everyone's eyes darted toward me at the same time.

Paul froze, staring at me in disbelief.

I pulled my phone out of my suit's inner pocket in a composed manner. The caller ID on the screen read, "Paul Roland".

I swiped my finger across the screen.

"Hello?" I answered the call, staring calmly at Paul, whose face had turned pale.

My voice traveled clearly through the phone and even echoed through the pin-drop silence in the showroom.

"Why, you—"

Paul's lips trembled, and his phone fell to the floor with a loud clank.

"You're… Mr. Boone?"

He finally recalled the vague silhouette glancing down at me from the second floor of the bank a few days ago. He had been so focused on begging for that loan that he hadn't dared to—or even thought to—properly look at the bank president, someone in such a high position.

Moreover, getting past the account manager was difficult enough, let alone meeting the bank

The "magic pen" the salesperson mentioned was probably the kind with special ink that would disappear automatically after a while. "Why did you bring it to me?" I asked. "I didn't know who to give it to either. I'm sure the cops must have already collected the evidence. I just felt like I should show this to you," he answered, rubbing his hands together."Also, I wanted to apologize to you in person, even though it won't change anything." He bowed slightly and turned around to leave. "Hold up," I called out to him. He froze in his tracks, his body going rigid. But he didn't dare look back."What are your plans for the future?" I asked. He turned around slowly, smiling bitterly and helplessly. "I probably won't be able to continue working in this industry. I'll see if I can find a job at a construction site or perhaps work as a deliveryman. I have to make a living either way." I gave him a quick glance and said, "You're still young, and you've got a long way to go. Rem

At this moment, the blank space on the contract looked glaringly ridiculous. "There's no need for that," I said, putting the contract back in the envelope."I'll take the car first. Tell your boss to be prepared. My lawyer will contact him about the contract dispute and compensation." The young salesperson nodded repeatedly, holding his breath in fear. I got in the driver's seat and closed the car door. The whole world fell silent. As I turned the ignition, a deep hum came from the engine. As I drove out of the gates, I could see the salesperson's face growing smaller in the rearview mirror. The streets were bustling with traffic, and upbeat music played on the radio. Everything seemed perfectly normal. Nevertheless, I knew that for Paul, his life and business were about to take a completely different turn from today onward. And it was all his own doing.A few days later, I saw the car dealership's name in a small circular for the industry's insiders. The owner's creditor h

A few of the burly men stepped forward immediately, scanning the luxury cars in the showroom with hostile expressions."Wait! Larry, please just give me a few more days. I'll think of a way!" Paul pleaded, crawling frantically to grab Larry's leg, only to be kicked aside. "You'll think of a way? And how will you do that? Just look at this useless place. What can you even get out of it now?" Larry scoffed and continued, "I reckon these cars are pretty decent. Let's take a few of them first to cover some of the interest!" When it seemed like the situation was getting out of control, I spoke up."Larry."He turned to me. Even though he still looked as vicious, his tone was much more polite. "What can I do for you, Mr. Boone? This brat isn't repaying his debt, so we're just going by the rules." "I have no right to interfere in your financial dispute. However, this is a public space. Legally speaking, the ownership of these cars can still be contested. Forcibly taking them could

"Larry and his men are the kind of people who would really take action…" As the whispers grew increasingly loud, the employees at the car dealership turned paler. At the same time, Larry and the burly men who had come with him crossed their arms over their chests, watching the internal strife unfold impassively. "Wow, Paul. Just, wow. You owe me a few million dollars, and you can't even pay your employees' salaries. Yet, you dared to put on airs and extort money from your clients? You really are shameless!" He strode up to Paul and stared down at him. "A loan, you said? Eight million dollars from Redward Bank, huh?"Larry scoffed. Without warning, he grabbed Paul by the collar and dragged him over to me, making him stumble in the process."Go on, Mr. Roland. Explain things properly in front of Mr. Boone once again and see if that eight-million-dollar loan of yours will still be approved." Paul turned pale. His knees gave way as he was dragged right up to me. "Go on!" Larr

"If the loan was approved, you swore you'd slave away so you could repay your debt on time and would never cause the bank any inconvenience," I said. With every word I spoke, Paul's face lost even more color. His body began to shiver uncontrollably. The details were too real, so much so that he couldn't deny any of it. "I was in the control room on the second floor at the time, so I happened to see you." I took a step forward and continued, "I saw how pitiful and desperate you looked. Considering the dozens of employees who were still waiting for their salaries, I relented. That's why I instructed the account manager to consider your application and proceed with the special approval process." The cold smirk on my face grew. "At the time, I thought I should just buy a car from your dealership since I had to buy one anyway. "That way, I could also help with adding some cash flow and supporting your business. I thought it would make your life a bit easier while you waited for y
