The heavy double doors of the private study clicked shut behind them, cutting off the vast, dark hallway of the estate. The room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a single brass desk lamp, casting long shadows across the floorboards.

Alex let go of her wrist, walking straight toward his desk. He pulled out her phone, staring at the dark screen with a lethal focus that made the room feel tight and airless.

"Alex, please," Cassie gasped, her voice shaking violently as she stepped closer to the desk. "You do not understand what you are doing. I need to handle this on my own. If my mother finds out about this, it will destroy her. She barely survived him the first time. I would rather deal with his threats every day for the rest of my life than let him ruin her peace here."

"You are not handling anything on your own," Alex said, his voice flat and stern. "You are being hunted by a criminal, Cassie."

"It is my mess!" she cried out, her chest heaving as tears finally spilled over her eyelashes in a hot, heavy stream. "I just wanted her to be happy! I wanted us to be safe!"

The sheer weight of the fear she had carried all day finally shattered her defenses completely. Her knees buckled under the weight of her grief, a loud, heartbroken sob ripping from her throat.

Before she could hit the floor, Alex moved.

He was across the room in a second, his large, solid frame catching her before she collapsed. He wrapped his long arms around her shoulders, pulling her trembling body flush against his chest. Cassie buried her face into the soft fabric of his shirt, her fingers clutching tightly at his waist as she wept uncontrollably.

Alex did not push her away. He held her tight against him, resting his cheek against the top of her head while one of his large hands began to gently pat her back. He rubbed steady, comforting circles against her spine, his warm breath fanning across her hair.

For the first time in years, the crushing weight on Cassie's chest began to loosen. Surrounded by his strong arms and the calm scent of cedar, a strange, quiet wave of relief washed over her exhausted body. She was not alone in the dark anymore.

While still holding her securely with one arm, Alex reached into his pocket with his free hand and pulled out his private phone. He brought it to his ear, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying command the moment the call connected.

"This is Alex," he said into the phone, his eyes fixed on the dark window. "We have a trespasser lingering near the main entrance gates. He is harassing a guest under this roof. Send three units to secure the perimeter right now. Find him, remove him from the property, and make sure he understands what happens if he ever steps foot in this city again. Do it quietly. No one in the main house hears a single sound."

He hung up the call and tossed his phone onto the side table, returning both of his arms around her frame to pull her closer.

Minutes passed in complete quiet, saved only by the sound of her soft, shuddering breaths. Cassie gradually stopped crying, her fast heart rate finally slowing down against the steady, rhythmic beat of his pulse. Alex stayed completely still, letting her catch her breath without rushing her or forcing her to move.

When her breathing finally evened out, Alex slowly loosened his grip, resting his hands lightly on her arms as he looked down into her tear stained face.

"Are you ready to tell me everything about him?" Alex asked gently, his tone low and careful. "Or do you want to get some rest?"

Cassie kept her eyes down, her throat too dry and tight to form proper words. She simply shook her head, unable to speak about the nightmare out loud just yet.

Alex did not push her. He stood there patiently in the warm lamplight, his dark eyes watching her with a quiet, watchful care, waiting to see what she wanted to do without putting any pressure on her fragile mind.

Cassie took a small step back, wiping her wet cheeks with her sleeve. "I... I should head back to my room now," she whispered softly.

Alex looked at her for a long moment, noticing how she kept glancing nervously toward the dark hallway outside the study doors. The fear was still lingering in her wide eyes.

"You do not have to sleep in your room tonight if you do not feel safe," Alex said, his tone casual and even. "My bedroom is right through that side door. You can take the bed, and I will take the couch."

Cassie hesitated, looking at the heavy wooden door leading into his personal living quarters. The thought of walking down the dark corridor to her own empty guest room made her stomach twist with fresh anxiety.

"Are you sure?" she asked softly.

"I am sure," Alex replied.

He stepped over to the side door and opened it, leading her into his large, dimly lit bedroom. A massive king size bed sat in the center of the room, made with dark, crisp sheets. On the far side of the room stood a long leather couch.

Cassie walked over to the bed, sliding off her shoes and slipping under the heavy comforter. She pulled the blanket up to her chin, her small frame curling into a tight ball against the white pillows.

Alex walked over to his closet, grabbing a thick spare blanket and a pillow. He began setting up the leather couch, smoothing out the fabric so he could lay down for the night.

Cassie watched him move through the quiet room, her heart beginning to flutter nervously as the silence stretched out. She squeezed her eyes shut, but every time she closed her eyes, the dark image of her stepfather at the front gates flashed behind her eyelids, making her body jump with a tiny shiver.

"Alex?" Cassie called out in a low, trembling voice.

Alex stopped what he was doing and turned around to look at the bed. "What is wrong?"

"I am... I am too scared to sleep alone tonight," she confessed, her voice barely louder than a breath. "Can you stay here?"

Alex stood still, looking at her with a gentle, hesitant expression. He wanted to make sure she was completely comfortable, not wanting to cross any boundaries while she was so vulnerable. "Cassie, I can stay right here on the couch. I am only a few feet away from you."

"Please," she repeated, her voice laced with a raw, desperate need for safety. "Just lay with me."

Alex stared at her for a few seconds before letting out a soft, quiet sigh. He set the extra pillow back onto the armchair and walked over to the edge of the mattress. He unbuttoned his heavy dark collar, kicked off his shoes, and quietly slid under the blankets on the opposite side of the large bed.

The moment his weight settled into the mattress, Cassie did not hesitate.

She turned onto her side and crumbled herself right against him, burying her face straight into his chest. She wrapped one arm over his waist, pressing her entire body into his warmth as if he were her only anchor in a storm.

Alex let out a slow breath, wrapping his long, strong arms tightly around her small frame. He pulled her flush against his broad chest, resting his chin on top of her head as he cradled her close, letting his warmth wrap around her like an unbreakable shield against the dark night.

  • Cassie’s Secret Deal   The Exposed Threat

Cassie pressed her back against the wooden back of the chair, her chest rising and falling in short, uneven breaths. She quickly brought her hands up to her face, using her long sleeves to scrub the wetness from her cheeks and under her eyes. She hated being caught like this. She hated feeling small, weak, and exposed, especially in front of him."I thought everyone was asleep," Cassie said, her voice rough and unsteady. She forced herself to stand up from the table, smoothing down her sweater and keeping her eyes fixed firmly on the dark floorboards between them. "I was just about to head upstairs."She tried to brush past him, taking a wide step toward the arched exit. But Alex moved with effortless, terrifying speed. He stepped directly into her path, his broad frame blocking the moonlight spilling from the hallway and casting a long shadow over her."Do not bother lying to me, Cassie," Alex said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble in the quiet room.Cassie stopped in her tracks, ref

  • Cassie’s Secret Deal   Midnight Shadows

Cassie woke up to a soft, rhythmic knock on her heavy bedroom door, the muffled sound pulling her out of a dark, dreamless sleep. She sat up slowly on the edge of the mattress, her body feeling heavy and exhausted. She had spent the entire late afternoon curled up in the dark, crying until her head throbbed and her eyes burned."Miss Cassie?" the polite voice of the estate chef called out from the hallway. "Dinner is served in the main dining room.""Thank you, I will be right down," Cassie called back, her voice sounding raspy and weak even to her own ears. She waited until the chef's footsteps faded down the hall before pulling herself up from the bed. She walked into the adjacent bathroom and stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her face was pale, her nose was slightly pink, and dark shadows rested under her eyes. She splashed icy water over her face three times, pressing a cool towel against her skin to reduce the swelling. She combed through her hair, pulled on a simple long s

Cassie broke eye contact instantly, dropping her gaze back down to her glass as her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. She felt completely exposed, sitting there in the warm afternoon light with her deepest denial crumbling apart. She tried to take a slow breath, forcing her shoulders to stay relaxed so no one at the table would notice the storm crashing inside her chest.Across the low glass table, Liam set his drink down with a loud clatter and leaned back against the wicker sofa cushions. A lazy grin spread across his face as he looked over at Alex, who was still sitting rigid and brooding in his chair."Look at him, Celeste," Liam said with a light chuckle, shaking his head. "The man looks like he is attending a high stakes business meeting instead of enjoying a quiet afternoon at home. I do not think I have seen him crack a real smile all week."Celeste giggled softly, leaning her weight against Alex's arm and resting her cheek right against his shoulder. Her long nails ligh

Morning sunlight poured into Cassie's guest room, pulling her out of a restless sleep. She sat up on the edge of the mattress and ran a hand through her hair. The memory of Alex pressing her against the hallway wall the night before rushed right back into her mind, making her pulse jump. She shook her head and pushed the thought away. Since she was currently on a school break with two years left before she finally graduated, she refused to sit around and waste her time. She stood up, opened her laptop, and laid out her sketchbooks on the small wooden desk by the window. If Alex wanted to play games and act like a ghost, she could focus entirely on her fashion designs and keep her mind occupied. The quiet stillness of the house broke when footsteps echoed down the hall. Cassie decided to head downstairs to grab a cup of coffee and clear her head. She walked into the bright and airy dining room where Veronica and Garrett sat together over morning coffee, talking quietly about upcoming p

Are you doing okay?""I am fine, Mom," Cassie said, giving a reassuring smile. "Just needed a minute to catch my breath."Garrett checked his watch and gave a warm nod. "It has been a long night, but a good one. I think it is time we head back."As they moved toward the front doors of the hotel, Alex rejoined the group. He walked with a quiet confidence, his dark suit making him stand out in the crowded lobby. His face was a cold mask, but when his eyes landed on Cassie, the heavy look in his eyes told her everything. The moment on the terrace was far from forgotten.Outside, the valets held open the doors to
