Morning sunlight poured into Cassie's guest room, pulling her out of a restless sleep. She sat up on the edge of the mattress and ran a hand through her hair. The memory of Alex pressing her against the hallway wall the night before rushed right back into her mind, making her pulse jump.

She shook her head and pushed the thought away. Since she was currently on a school break with two years left before she finally graduated, she refused to sit around and waste her time. She stood up, opened her laptop, and laid out her sketchbooks on the small wooden desk by the window. If Alex wanted to play games and act like a ghost, she could focus entirely on her fashion designs and keep her mind occupied.

The quiet stillness of the house broke when footsteps echoed down the hall. Cassie decided to head downstairs to grab a cup of coffee and clear her head.

She walked into the bright and airy dining room where Veronica and Garrett sat together over morning coffee, talking quietly about upcoming plans.

"Good morning, sweetie," Veronica said with a warm smile, looking up from her cup.

"Morning, Mom. Morning, Garrett," Cassie said, pouring herself a cup of coffee.

A moment later, the dining room doors swung open. Alex walked in, dressed sharply in a dark suit for work. His broad shoulders filled the doorway, his face locked into a mask of pure ice.

"Morning, Dad. Veronica," Alex said smoothly. He glanced toward Cassie, offering a brief and entirely nonchalant nod of acknowledgment before looking away instantly, treating her as if she were nothing more than a piece of furniture on the wall.

Cassie froze for a second, her fingers tightening around her coffee mug. That was it. No sharp remarks, no intense stares, and no cornering her in the hallway. Just total and freezing indifference.

Alex took a seat far down the opposite end of the long table, keeping his eyes glued to his phone and his coffee cup. Throughout breakfast, he answered Garrett in short sentences and acted completely as though Cassie did not exist in the room.

Cassie kept her chin high, refusing to let his sudden cold shoulder bother her. But the heavy silence stretching between them made every second feel like hours.

As soon as breakfast ended, Garrett excused himself to take a business call in his study, and Alex stood up immediately, walking out of the room without a single backward glance.

Left alone at the table for a moment, Veronica reached out and gently touched Cassie's hand, her eyes full of quiet worry. "Is everything alright between you and Alex, honey? He has been acting so distant since last night."

"Everything is fine, Mom," Cassie lied smoothly, giving her a reassuring smile. "He is just busy with work."

Veronica looked like she wanted to ask more, but she let it go with a soft nod.

Later in the afternoon, the heavy front doors of the estate swung open, echoing loudly through the grand foyer. Cassie was walking down the stairs with her design notebook when she heard laughter, bright and loud and entirely out of place in the quiet mansion.

Alex walked through the front doors, and he was not alone.

He had brought his best friend, Liam, and his glamorous girlfriend, Celeste, back with him from the city. The moment they stepped into the entryway, Celeste latched straight onto Alex. She looped her arm tightly through his bicep and pressed her body close to his, laughing at something Liam had called out from behind them.

"Ah, perfect timing," Veronica called out from the sunroom, stepping into the foyer with a bright smile. "We are just having some afternoon tea and light snacks. You all should join us."

Liam grinned and slid a casual hand into his jacket pocket. "We would love to, Mrs. Grey. Right, Celeste?"

"Absolutely," Celeste agreed, her voice smooth and polished as she tossed her long dark hair over her shoulder and leaned her head against Alex's shoulder.

Cassie stood frozen on the lower steps of the staircase, clutching her notebook tightly against her chest. She wanted to turn around and walk right back up to her room, but Veronica had already spotted her standing there.

"Cassie, come join us," Veronica urged kindly, giving her no room to escape.

With no polite way out, Cassie walked over to the sunroom and took a seat on the edge of the white wicker sofa, sitting directly across from them.

The next twenty minutes turned into a slow form of torture. Celeste refused to give Alex even an inch of personal space. She kept her hand resting possessively on his knee, leaned in close to whisper in his ear, and giggled loudly at every single thing he said. When a tray of pastries was passed around, she picked up a small cake and literally held it to his lips until he took a bite, making her clingy intentions crystal clear to everyone in the room.

Cassie stared down at her glass of water, trying hard to block them out. She kept her eyes fixed on the condensation dripping down the side of the glass, praying the heavy knot in her chest would just go away.

A hot and sharp wave of jealousy twisted violently inside her ribs. Her breath hitched, and panic rushed through her veins.

Her mind went into absolute overdrive, screaming excuses at her to shut the feeling down.

This is completely insane, she told herself fiercely. He is practically my stepbrother. He has a real girlfriend sitting right beside him, and I do not see him in that light at all. I am just annoyed by how loud and obnoxious she is being.

She kept repeating the lie in her head, desperate to convince herself that she did not care. But the tight grip of her fingers around her water glass told a completely different story.

Across the small glass table, the loud chatter suddenly dipped.

Cassie looked up just an inch, and her breath caught in her throat. Alex had stopped listening to Celeste entirely. His casual and relaxed posture vanished, replaced by a dark and heavy intensity. His eyes cut straight through the space between them, locking onto Cassie with a knowing look that showed he saw right through every single wall she was trying to build.

He knew. He saw the way her jaw was clenched. He saw the bitter spark in her eyes. And worse than that, he looked completely satisfied by it.

Cassie broke eye contact instantly, dropping her gaze back down to her glass as her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. She felt completely exposed, sitting there in the warm afternoon light with her deepest denial crumbling apart.

  • Cassie’s Secret Deal   Behind Closed Doors

The heavy double doors of the private study clicked shut behind them, cutting off the vast, dark hallway of the estate. The room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a single brass desk lamp, casting long shadows across the floorboards.Alex let go of her wrist, walking straight toward his desk. He pulled out her phone, staring at the dark screen with a lethal focus that made the room feel tight and airless."Alex, please," Cassie gasped, her voice shaking violently as she stepped closer to the desk. "You do not understand what you are doing. I need to handle this on my own. If my mother finds out about this, it will destroy her. She barely survived him the first time. I would rather deal with his threats every day for the rest of my life than let him ruin her peace here.""You are not handling anything on your own," Alex said, his voice flat and stern. "You are being hunted by a criminal, Cassie.""It is my mess!" she cried out, her chest heaving as tears finally spilled over her eye

  • Cassie’s Secret Deal   The Exposed Threat

Cassie pressed her back against the wooden back of the chair, her chest rising and falling in short, uneven breaths. She quickly brought her hands up to her face, using her long sleeves to scrub the wetness from her cheeks and under her eyes. She hated being caught like this. She hated feeling small, weak, and exposed, especially in front of him."I thought everyone was asleep," Cassie said, her voice rough and unsteady. She forced herself to stand up from the table, smoothing down her sweater and keeping her eyes fixed firmly on the dark floorboards between them. "I was just about to head upstairs."She tried to brush past him, taking a wide step toward the arched exit. But Alex moved with effortless, terrifying speed. He stepped directly into her path, his broad frame blocking the moonlight spilling from the hallway and casting a long shadow over her."Do not bother lying to me, Cassie," Alex said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble in the quiet room.Cassie stopped in her tracks, ref

Cassie woke up to a soft, rhythmic knock on her heavy bedroom door, the muffled sound pulling her out of a dark, dreamless sleep. She sat up slowly on the edge of the mattress, her body feeling heavy and exhausted. She had spent the entire late afternoon curled up in the dark, crying until her head throbbed and her eyes burned."Miss Cassie?" the polite voice of the estate chef called out from the hallway. "Dinner is served in the main dining room.""Thank you, I will be right down," Cassie called back, her voice sounding raspy and weak even to her own ears. She waited until the chef's footsteps faded down the hall before pulling herself up from the bed. She walked into the adjacent bathroom and stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her face was pale, her nose was slightly pink, and dark shadows rested under her eyes. She splashed icy water over her face three times, pressing a cool towel against her skin to reduce the swelling. She combed through her hair, pulled on a simple long s

She tried to take a slow breath, forcing her shoulders to stay relaxed so no one at the table would notice the storm crashing inside her chest.Across the low glass table, Liam set his drink down with a loud clatter and leaned back against the wicker sofa cushions. A lazy grin spread across his face as he looked over at Alex, who was still sitting rigid and brooding in his chair."Look at him, Celeste," Liam said with a light chuckle, shaking his head. "The man looks like he is attending a high stakes business meeting instead of enjoying a quiet afternoon at home. I do not think I have seen him crack a real smile all week."Celeste giggled softly, leaning her weight against Alex's arm and resting her cheek right against his shoulder. Her long nails ligh

Are you doing okay?""I am fine, Mom," Cassie said, giving a reassuring smile. "Just needed a minute to catch my breath."Garrett checked his watch and gave a warm nod.
