Cassie stepped back inside the brightly lit ballroom, taking a slow breath to calm her nerves. The cold air of the terrace was still fresh on her skin, but she smoothed down her dress and kept her head up. She found her mother standing near Garrett, talking to a small group of investors.

Veronica looked over, her face softening when she saw her daughter. "There you are, sweetie. Are you doing okay?"

"I am fine, Mom," Cassie said, giving a reassuring smile. "Just needed a minute to catch my breath."

Garrett checked his watch and gave a warm nod. "It has been a long night, but a good one. I think it is time we head back."

As they moved toward the front doors of the hotel, Alex rejoined the group. He walked with a quiet confidence, his dark suit making him stand out in the crowded lobby. His face was a cold mask, but when his eyes landed on Cassie, the heavy look in his eyes told her everything. The moment on the terrace was far from forgotten.

Outside, the valets held open the doors to the two luxury cars. Garrett guided Veronica into the front car, leaving Alex and Cassie to take the second car once again.

Cassie climbed into the back seat, sliding all the way to the far side near the door. Alex got in right after, his long legs taking up space as he settled beside her. The heavy car door shut with a soft thud, shutting out the noise of the flashing cameras and the city street.

The convoy pulled out onto the main road, the dark inside of the car quickly filling with a heavy silence.

Cassie kept her eyes glued to the dark window, watching the streetlights pass by in a yellow blur. She could feel the steady heat coming off Alex's body just inches away. Every second spent in the small space made her heart beat a little faster.

"You look like you are waiting for a fight," Alex said, his deep voice breaking the quiet hum of the engine.

Cassie did not look at him right away. "I am just tired, Alex."

"You were quick to run outside earlier," he continued, leaning his arm on the door, turning his head to look at her in the dim light. "You act like you do not care about anyone here, but you let every little thing get to you."

Cassie turned her head slowly, meeting his eyes without backing down. "I went outside because the room was loud, not because I was running from anyone. And I am not letting anything get to me. I know who I am and why I am here."

"Do you?" Alex’s voice dropped, carrying a quiet edge. "Because from where I am sitting, you are trying so hard to prove you do not need help that you are blinding yourself to how hard things can get."

"I have managed my own life just fine without a safety net," Cassie replied, her voice firm and steady. " never asked you for help and I definitely do not need your unwanted protection. The only person crossing lines here is you."

Alex stared at her, his jaw tightening as her words landed. He wanted to tell her she was being stubborn. He wanted to tell her that he was only looking out for the family name. But looking at the fire in her eyes, that lie felt weak even to him. He turned back toward his window, letting out a heavy breath into the quiet dark of the car.

Twenty minutes later, the convoy turned down the long driveway of the Grey estate. The massive stone house stood quiet under the night sky, lit up by soft lights on the lawn.

The car stopped near the front steps, and the driver opened the door. Cassie stepped out into the night without waiting for Alex. She walked straight through the  front doors into the foyer.

Garrett and Veronica were already heading up the stairs, speaking in low, tired voices.

"Goodnight, children," Garrett called down with a warm wave before turning toward the main bedroom wing. "Get some sleep."

"Goodnight," Veronica added softly, giving Cassie a sweet nod before following Garrett down the hall.

Cassie waited until their bedroom door clicked shut before turning to head toward her own guest room on the other side of the upper floor. But as she reached the bottom step of the main staircase, a broad shadow blocked her path.

Alex stepped right into her way, forcing her to stop.

"Excuse me, Alex," Cassie said, taking a small step back. "It is late."

"We are not finished," Alex said quietly. The hallway was dimly lit by a single light, throwing deep shadows across his face. He stepped closer, backing her up against the heavy wooden wall near the stairs.

Cassie felt the hard wood against her spine. She kept her head held high, looking right up into his dark eyes. "There is nothing left to talk about."

"You keep saying that," Alex murmured, his voice low and rough in the quiet house. He placed one large hand on the wall beside her head, trapping her in his space. The scent of his clean cologne filled her senses, making her breath catch in her throat. "You stand there and pretend you do not feel this. You pretend I do not get to you."

"Because you do not," Cassie lied, her voice shaking just a little bit despite her best efforts.

Alex leaned down, his face coming so close she could feel the warm air of his breath on her cheek. His eyes dropped to her lips before coming back up to meet her eyes. "You are a terrible liar, Cassie."

"Get out of my way," she said softly, her chest rising and falling fast as she held his gaze. "You told me from day one to stay away from you. You told me not to get comfortable. But every time we are alone, you are the one stepping closer."

Alex froze. Her words hit him like a cold shock. He stared at her, his fingers tightening against the wall as the reality of his own actions sank in. He was the one following her down hallways. He was the one chasing her out onto cold balconies. He was breaking every rule he had made, all because he could not stand the thought of her ignoring him.

With a slow breath, Alex pulled his hand back from the wall and took a step away. The sudden space between them felt freezing.

His face turned back into a cold mask, though his eyes stayed dark with frustration. "Go to your room, Cassie."

Cassie did not say another word. She walked past him quickly, her heels tapping softly against the floor as she made her way down the quiet hallway to her room.

She stepped inside, shut the heavy door, and turned the lock with a quick click. Leaning her back against the door, she let out the breath she had been holding, her heart pounding against her ribs like a drum.

He kept telling her to keep her distance. But as she stood alone in the dark room, Cassie knew the truth. The real danger in this house was not the big mansion or the rich crowd. It was Alex, and the way he was slowly pulling her in.

  • Cassie’s Secret Deal   Behind Closed Doors

The heavy double doors of the private study clicked shut behind them, cutting off the vast, dark hallway of the estate. The room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a single brass desk lamp, casting long shadows across the floorboards.Alex let go of her wrist, walking straight toward his desk. He pulled out her phone, staring at the dark screen with a lethal focus that made the room feel tight and airless."Alex, please," Cassie gasped, her voice shaking violently as she stepped closer to the desk. "You do not understand what you are doing. I need to handle this on my own. If my mother finds out about this, it will destroy her. She barely survived him the first time. I would rather deal with his threats every day for the rest of my life than let him ruin her peace here.""You are not handling anything on your own," Alex said, his voice flat and stern. "You are being hunted by a criminal, Cassie.""It is my mess!" she cried out, her chest heaving as tears finally spilled over her eye

  • Cassie’s Secret Deal   The Exposed Threat

Cassie pressed her back against the wooden back of the chair, her chest rising and falling in short, uneven breaths. She quickly brought her hands up to her face, using her long sleeves to scrub the wetness from her cheeks and under her eyes. She hated being caught like this. She hated feeling small, weak, and exposed, especially in front of him."I thought everyone was asleep," Cassie said, her voice rough and unsteady. She forced herself to stand up from the table, smoothing down her sweater and keeping her eyes fixed firmly on the dark floorboards between them. "I was just about to head upstairs."She tried to brush past him, taking a wide step toward the arched exit. But Alex moved with effortless, terrifying speed. He stepped directly into her path, his broad frame blocking the moonlight spilling from the hallway and casting a long shadow over her."Do not bother lying to me, Cassie," Alex said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble in the quiet room.Cassie stopped in her tracks, ref

  • Cassie’s Secret Deal   Midnight Shadows

Cassie woke up to a soft, rhythmic knock on her heavy bedroom door, the muffled sound pulling her out of a dark, dreamless sleep. She sat up slowly on the edge of the mattress, her body feeling heavy and exhausted. She had spent the entire late afternoon curled up in the dark, crying until her head throbbed and her eyes burned."Miss Cassie?" the polite voice of the estate chef called out from the hallway. "Dinner is served in the main dining room.""Thank you, I will be right down," Cassie called back, her voice sounding raspy and weak even to her own ears. She waited until the chef's footsteps faded down the hall before pulling herself up from the bed. She walked into the adjacent bathroom and stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her face was pale, her nose was slightly pink, and dark shadows rested under her eyes. She splashed icy water over her face three times, pressing a cool towel against her skin to reduce the swelling. She combed through her hair, pulled on a simple long s

  • Cassie’s Secret Deal   The Secret Terror

Cassie broke eye contact instantly, dropping her gaze back down to her glass as her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. She felt completely exposed, sitting there in the warm afternoon light with her deepest denial crumbling apart. She tried to take a slow breath, forcing her shoulders to stay relaxed so no one at the table would notice the storm crashing inside her chest.Across the low glass table, Liam set his drink down with a loud clatter and leaned back against the wicker sofa cushions. A lazy grin spread across his face as he looked over at Alex, who was still sitting rigid and brooding in his chair."Look at him, Celeste," Liam said with a light chuckle, shaking his head. "The man looks like he is attending a high stakes business meeting instead of enjoying a quiet afternoon at home. I do not think I have seen him crack a real smile all week."Celeste giggled softly, leaning her weight against Alex's arm and resting her cheek right against his shoulder. Her long nails ligh

  • Cassie’s Secret Deal   The Denial

Morning sunlight poured into Cassie's guest room, pulling her out of a restless sleep. She sat up on the edge of the mattress and ran a hand through her hair. The memory of Alex pressing her against the hallway wall the night before rushed right back into her mind, making her pulse jump. She shook her head and pushed the thought away. Since she was currently on a school break with two years left before she finally graduated, she refused to sit around and waste her time. She stood up, opened her laptop, and laid out her sketchbooks on the small wooden desk by the window. If Alex wanted to play games and act like a ghost, she could focus entirely on her fashion designs and keep her mind occupied. The quiet stillness of the house broke when footsteps echoed down the hall. Cassie decided to head downstairs to grab a cup of coffee and clear her head. She walked into the bright and airy dining room where Veronica and Garrett sat together over morning coffee, talking quietly about upcoming p
