Cassie pressed her back against the wooden back of the chair, her chest rising and falling in short, uneven breaths. She quickly brought her hands up to her face, using her long sleeves to scrub the wetness from her cheeks and under her eyes. She hated being caught like this. She hated feeling small, weak, and exposed, especially in front of him.

"I thought everyone was asleep," Cassie said, her voice rough and unsteady. She forced herself to stand up from the table, smoothing down her sweater and keeping her eyes fixed firmly on the dark floorboards between them. "I was just about to head upstairs."

She tried to brush past him, taking a wide step toward the arched exit. But Alex moved with effortless, terrifying speed. He stepped directly into her path, his broad frame blocking the moonlight spilling from the hallway and casting a long shadow over her.

"Do not bother lying to me, Cassie," Alex said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble in the quiet room.

Cassie stopped in her tracks, refusing to look up into his face. "I am not lying. I already said so at dinner, I just have a headache. I need to go to sleep."

"You did not eat a single bite of your food," Alex said quietly, taking one heavy step closer to her. The subtle scent of cedar and cold fresh air clung to him, wrapping around her senses. "You sat in the sunroom this afternoon looking like you were about to faint, you bolted out of the room like the house was on fire, and now you are sitting alone in the dark sobbing."

Cassie swallowed hard, the lump in her throat making it feel like she was choking. "It is nothing that concerns you, Alex. Please just let me pass."

"It concerns me when you are acting like a ghost under my roof," he replied, his tone firm, unyielding, and laced with an edge of quiet frustration. "Look at me."

Cassie kept her chin down, her jaw clenched tightly. "No. Let me go."

"Cassie," he repeated, his voice dropping an octave lower, carrying a command that made a shiver run down her spine. "Look at me."

Before she could fight the impulse, her eyes snapped up to meet his. In the dim moonlight, his dark eyes were intense, searching her face with a raw, penetrating focus that seemed to strip away every single layer of defense she had spent weeks building up.

"Who broke you down like this?" he asked softly, the sharp edge in his voice smoothing out into something far more dangerous. "Tell me."

"Nobody," Cassie whispered, her breath hitching as she tried to pull away from his overwhelming presence. "I am just stressed. That is all. You do not need to care. You spent the whole day ignoring me anyway, so why do you suddenly care now?"

Alex opened his mouth to answer, his dark eyes flashing with a sudden, dark ember, when a harsh, buzzing vibration clattered against the surface of the dining table behind her.

The sound cut through the tense quiet like a gunshot.

Cassie gasped, her eyes widening in pure panic as she spun around. Her phone screen was lit up brightly in the dark room, casting a pale blue glow against the polished wood. A new notification preview was sitting right on the lock screen, clear as day.

I am tired of waiting, Cassie. I see the lights going out in that big house. If you do not come down to the main gate in five minutes, I am ringing the intercom and telling your mother's rich new husband everything about what you did.

Cassie lunged forward to grab the device, her fingers reaching out in a frantic scramble to hide the screen before he could see it.

She was not fast enough.

Alex's hand shot out like a striking serpent. His fingers wrapped firmly around the body of the phone, lifting it off the table before her trembling hand could even touch the glass.

"Give that back to me!" Cassie cried out, her voice cracking as she reached for it. "Alex, give it to me! That is personal!"

Alex did not look at her. He lifted the screen, his dark eyes scanning the text line by line.

Cassie watched his face, her heart slamming against her ribs like a trapped bird. She expected him to ask questions. She expected him to demand explanations, or scoff at her messy past, or tell her to handle her own dirty laundry away from his family.

Instead, a terrifying, absolute silence settled over Alex.

The subtle tension in his posture shifted into a terrifying, rigid stillness. Cassie watched as the color in his dark eyes seemed to harden into pure obsidian. The muscle along his sharp jawline clenched so hard she could see it flex in the moonlight. The atmosphere in the room temperature seemed to drop instantly, turning icy and thick with an unspoken, lethal threat.

He did not raise his voice. He did not curse. He simply hit the side button on her phone, turning the screen black, and slid the device deep into the front pocket of his dark trousers.

"Alex, please," Cassie pleaded, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes as she clutched her own hands together to stop them from shaking. "Give me my phone back. You do not understand. I have to deal with him. If he comes to the house, he will destroy my mother's life. She worked so hard to escape him, she cannot go through this again. I will handle it, I promise you, just give it back—"

"Shut up, Cassie," Alex said softly.

The words were not spoken in anger or harshness, but with a quiet, undeniable authority that instantly cut her off.

Before she could utter another breath, Alex reached out and closed his large, warm hand around her wrist. His grip was firm, solid, and absolute, binding her to him without hurting her fragile skin. He did not ask for permission, nor did he offer her a choice.

He turned on his heel and began pulling her along with him out of the dining room, his long strides taking them down the dark, quiet corridor toward the private, secluded wing of the estate where his personal study lay.

Cassie stumbled slightly, her pulse hammering in her ears as she tried to keep pace with him. "Alex, where are we going? What are you doing?"

Alex did not slow down, his eyes fixed dead ahead on the heavy wooden doors at the end of the hall. His fingers tightened just a fraction around her wrist, steadying her, anchoring her to his side as if he had no intention of ever letting go again.

"We are going to my study," Alex said, his voice icy, flat, and chillingly calm. "And then I am going to make sure that man never speaks your name again."

The room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a single brass desk lamp, casting long shadows across the floorboards.Alex let go of her wrist, walking straight toward his desk. He pulled out her phone, staring at the dark screen with a lethal focus that made the room feel tight and airless."Alex, please," Cassie gasped, her voice shaking violently as she stepped closer to the desk. "You do not understand what you are doing. I need to handle this on my own. If my mother finds out about this, it will destroy her. She barely survived him the first time. I would rather deal with his threats every day for the rest of my life than let him ruin her peace here.""You are not handling anything on your own," Alex said, his voice flat and stern. "You are being hunted by a criminal, Cassie.""It is my mess!" she cried out, her chest heaving as tears finally spilled over her eye

Cassie woke up to a soft, rhythmic knock on her heavy bedroom door, the muffled sound pulling her out of a dark, dreamless sleep. She sat up slowly on the edge of the mattress, her body feeling heavy and exhausted. She had spent the entire late afternoon curled up in the dark, crying until her head throbbed and her eyes burned."Miss Cassie?" the polite voice of the estate chef called out from the hallway. "Dinner is served in the main dining room.""Thank you, I will be right down," Cassie called back, her voice sounding raspy and weak even to her own ears. She waited until the chef's footsteps faded down the hall before pulling herself up from the bed. She walked into the adjacent bathroom and stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her face was pale, her nose was slightly pink, and dark shadows rested under her eyes. She splashed icy water over her face three times, pressing a cool towel against her skin to reduce the swelling. She combed through her hair, pulled on a simple long s

Cassie broke eye contact instantly, dropping her gaze back down to her glass as her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. She felt completely exposed, sitting there in the warm afternoon light with her deepest denial crumbling apart. She tried to take a slow breath, forcing her shoulders to stay relaxed so no one at the table would notice the storm crashing inside her chest.Across the low glass table, Liam set his drink down with a loud clatter and leaned back against the wicker sofa cushions. A lazy grin spread across his face as he looked over at Alex, who was still sitting rigid and brooding in his chair."Look at him, Celeste," Liam said with a light chuckle, shaking his head. "The man looks like he is attending a high stakes business meeting instead of enjoying a quiet afternoon at home. I do not think I have seen him crack a real smile all week."Celeste giggled softly, leaning her weight against Alex's arm and resting her cheek right against his shoulder. Her long nails ligh

Morning sunlight poured into Cassie's guest room, pulling her out of a restless sleep. She sat up on the edge of the mattress and ran a hand through her hair. The memory of Alex pressing her against the hallway wall the night before rushed right back into her mind, making her pulse jump. She shook her head and pushed the thought away. Since she was currently on a school break with two years left before she finally graduated, she refused to sit around and waste her time. She stood up, opened her laptop, and laid out her sketchbooks on the small wooden desk by the window. If Alex wanted to play games and act like a ghost, she could focus entirely on her fashion designs and keep her mind occupied. The quiet stillness of the house broke when footsteps echoed down the hall. Are you doing okay?""I am fine, Mom," Cassie said, giving a reassuring smile. "Just needed a minute to catch my breath."Garrett checked his watch and gave a warm nod. "It has been a long night, but a good one. I think it is time we head back."As they moved toward the front doors of the hotel, Alex rejoined the group.
