Riley looked up at her mother’s portrait one more time.

Evelyn Whitmore at seventeen.

She looked nothing like the mother Riley remembered.

And yet there was no mistaking that face.

“...Mom never told me.”

Riley’s voice came out quieter than she meant it to.

“Not about this house. Not about you.”

“I didn’t expect that she would.”

Charles’s voice was calm.

“Evelyn intended to leave her entire past behind.”

“Didn’t you look for her?”

“I did.”

The answer came immediately.

“For years.”

Riley turned toward him.

Charles was still looking at the portrait.

“At first, I assumed she would come back. She had little money and few people she could rely on. I thought once she learned how difficult life outside this family could be, she’d return.”

“She didn’t.”

“No.”

“Yeah. Mom could be stubborn like that.”

“I know.”

Charles gave a bitter little smile.

“Eventually, I stopped caring whether she came home. I only wanted to know she was safe.”

But Evelyn had changed her name and moved from place to place.

Charles had never managed to find her.

And by the time he finally did—

it was already too late.

“I learned that your mother had died a few months ago.”

Riley said nothing.

“And while looking into what happened to her, I discovered that my daughter had a child.”

“Me.”

“Yes.”

Charles finally looked at her.

“I wanted to meet you.”

The simple honesty of it made Riley uncomfortable.

Being yelled at would have been easier.

Crying would have been worse.

So, as usual, she let her mouth handle the situation.

“And that required surrounding me with black cars?”

“I apologized for that.”

“I haven’t forgiven you yet.”

“Then I apologize again.”

“You don’t get double forgiveness for apologizing twice.”

“I see.”

Charles smiled faintly.

That only made Riley feel more off-balance.

“So.”

She folded her arms.

“You brought me all the way here. What exactly do you want?”

“I want you to live here.”

“...What?”

“I’d like you to live in this house.”

“I heard you. I just don’t understand you.”

“I mean exactly what I said.”

Riley looked around.

The endless hallway.

The expensive-looking paintings.

The expensive-looking vases.

The expensive-looking floor.

She couldn’t have guessed the price of a single thing in the place, but she was pretty sure all of it cost too much.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“Here?”

“Yes.”

“Live here?”

“That is what I’m proposing.”

Riley thought about that for a moment.

“Rent?”

“None.”

“Food?”

“Of course not.”

“Electricity?”

“You won’t be paying for it.”

“Water?”

“No.”

“Meals?”

“They’ll be provided.”

“Every day?”

“Every day.”

“...Seriously?”

Charles’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“Are you becoming interested?”

“No.”

“I see.”

“I’m just checking.”

“Of course you are.”

Riley frowned.

Annoying.

But free rent was powerful.

Extremely powerful.

“If you want to go home, I won’t stop you,” Charles continued.

Riley looked up, surprised.

“You won’t?”

“If I force you to stay here, I’ll only be making the same mistake all over again.”

That shut her up.

“All I’m asking is that you try living here for a while. If you hate it, we can decide what to do then.”

“...For how long?”

“As long as you want.”

“That’s vague.”

“A week. A year. Whatever you choose.”

“That’s a pretty huge range.”

At that exact moment, Riley’s stomach growled.

Loudly.

The sound echoed down the quiet hallway.

“...”

Charles looked at her.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“I was running. I’m hungry.”

“I see.”

“Don’t laugh.”

“I’m not laughing.”

“Your mouth is!”

Charles cleared his throat.

“Let’s get you something to eat.”

“What do you have?”

“Whatever you’d like, within reason.”

“Anything?”

“As long as it can be arranged.”

“A burger.”

Charles paused.

“...A hamburger?”

“And fries.”

“All right.”

“Coke.”

“All right.”

“A large.”

“You’re specifying the size too?”

“You said whatever I wanted.”

“Fair enough.”

Riley smiled just a little.

Maybe this wasn’t so bad.

At the very least, there was food.

Free food.

Maybe staying a few days wouldn’t hurt—

“Father!”

A sharp female voice rang out from the far end of the hallway.

Riley turned.

A woman was walking toward them with perfect posture.

Her dark brown hair was immaculate. So were her clothes. There wasn’t a single thing about her that seemed out of place.

Beside her walked a man in glasses and a tailored suit.

Both of them were staring at Riley.

More specifically—

at her ripped jeans.

Her dirty sneakers.

Her messy ponytail.

And the mud on one knee.

The woman’s eyebrows slowly rose.

“...That’s her?”

“Yes,” Charles said.

“This is Riley.”

The woman stared at Riley for a long moment.

Riley stared right back.

“What?”

The man beside her closed his eyes.

For some reason, he already looked tired.

Charles, apparently unconcerned, continued the introductions.

“Riley, this is Vivian. Your aunt.”

“Aunt.”

“And this is Grant. Your uncle.”

“Uncle.”

Riley looked from one to the other.

Then back at Charles.

“Are there more of you?”

Grant let out a quiet breath.

“...She really does take after Evelyn.”

Vivian’s eyebrows climbed even higher.

  • Catch Me, Maybe   Chapter 31: You Said We Were Just Taking Measurements, Right?

The next morning at ten, Riley stood in the middle of her room. With both arms stretched out.“...You said we were just taking measurements, right?”“That’s exactly what we’re doing,” Vivian replied calmly.“Then why are there so many people here?”Vivian stood in front of her.Beside her was a woman holding a measuring tape. And two more women after that.Fabric samples and shoe boxes covered the table. And—for some reason, there were already three dresses.“You said we were just taking measurements!”“I can hear you.”“Then what are those dresses doing back there?!”“They’re for reference.”“Your references are fully assembled!”The woman with the measuring tape tried not to laugh.Vivian introduced her.“This is Helen. She’s been handling our family’s wardrobe for years.”“Nice to meet you, Riley.”“Nice to meet you too... but we’re only mea

  • Catch Me, Maybe   Chapter 30: I’ll Stay a Little Longer

It was a little after three when Riley returned to the mansion.Today’s car was gray. She stepped out in front of the house and nodded approvingly.“This works.”“What does?” Dana asked.“The car. It’s normal.”“You’ve been very concerned about that since yesterday.”“It matters.”“I’ll let Hale know.”“Tell him I approve.”“And that he’s growing as a person?”“You can leave that part out.”Dana smiled slightly.“Did you just laugh?”“You imagined it.”“You’re completely turning into Marcus.”◇Riley stepped into the entrance hall.“I’m home!”This time, she didn’t freeze afterward. She didn’t panic over having said it either.Marcus, standing a short distance away, looked over.“Welcome home.”“...Now you’re saying it too.”“Do you mind?”“Not really.”Riley glanced down at her shoes.“Actually,

  • Catch Me, Maybe   Chapter 29: Maybe I’ll Know If I Go Back?

After breakfast, Riley lay sprawled across the bed in her room.“Stay.”She stared at the ceiling.“Go back.”She looked to the right.“Stay.”Then to the left.“Go back.”Back to the ceiling.“...HOW IS THIS SUPPOSED TO HELP?!”She sat up.The more she thought about it, the less she knew. The mansion was comfortable. And her family was nowhere near as bad as she’d expected at first.Actually—“Nope. Thinking about that just makes it harder.”Riley grabbed her phone.◇An hour later, Riley stood outside her apartment building. No black car today.Just an ordinary gray sedan.“See? You guys can do normal.”“Do what?” Dana asked.“Drive a normal car.”“Hale arranged it.”“Marcus is growing as a person.”“I’ll tell him you said that.”“You don’t have to.”Riley looked up at the building.

  • Catch Me, Maybe   Chapter 28: What Changes If I Stay?

The next morning.Riley tore off a piece of bread at breakfast and looked across the table at Charles.Once.Twice.Three times.“Riley.”“What?”“If there’s something you want to ask, ask.”“How did you know?”“I’ve had three days to learn your habits.”Grant took a sip of coffee.“That’s not even my line!”“At this point, I think it belongs to the whole family.”“I don’t want that!”Charles laughed.“Well?”“...Tomorrow makes a week.”The mood at the table settled slightly.“Yes.”“When I first got here, you said I could try this for one week.”“That’s right.”“And after that…”Riley set down her bread.“If I say I want to stay, what happens?”Vivian looked up.Grant turned his attention to Riley too, saying nothing.“What do you mean by ‘what happens’?” Charles asked.“Everything.”“Can

  • Catch Me, Maybe   Chapter 27: Did You Just Say “I’m Home”?

The walk from the gate to the mansion really was that long.“Are we there yet?”“Not yet.”“You said that before.”“We weren’t there before.”“We’re still not there!”Dana kept walking as if the distance meant nothing.Riley adjusted the bag on her shoulder.“Rich people are weird. It’s not enough for the house to be huge. Even the distance to the house has to be huge.”“Would you like to take a car next time?”“If it’s not black, I’ll consider it.”“I’ll let Hale know.”“A normal car!”“What qualifies as normal?”“Don’t ask. My definition and that family’s are definitely not the same.”At last, the mansion came into view.By the time they reached the front entrance, Riley was completely worn out.“The longest part of my commute was after I got off the bus...”“You made it.”“You’ve got way too much stamina, Dana.”“It’s my job.”“So all

  • Catch Me, Maybe   Chapter 26: When I Say I’m Going Home... Which Home?

Six o’clock.“Good work, everyone!”Riley took off her apron and came out from the back.“You’re in again at two the day after tomorrow,” Nora said.“Got it.”“And make sure we can actually reach you this time.”“I have a phone now. I’m good.”“Don’t lose this one.”“Probably won’t.”“That is where you’re supposed to say definitely.”Riley laughed and slung her bag over her shoulder. She looked around the diner. The seat by the window.Dana was gone.“...Did she leave?”“Who?”“My security person.”“She’s working. Why would she leave?”“But I can’t see her.”“Isn’t that what good security is supposed to look like?”“Sounds like something Marcus would say.”Nora smiled and shook her head.“All right. Get home safe.”“Yeah. I’m heading home.”Riley got that far, then stopp
