Artemis White's POV

"Today, we start from zero", Herrington said. He removed his jacket, revealing a short-sleeved shirt and arms covered in faded campaign tattoos. His skin was a story of every time he was deployed. Every battle, every comrade gained and lost. I could feel admiration and respect welling within me, more than I already had for him. "We build the body before we teach it how to fight", he explained. I listened carefully, nodding when he looked at me with eyes that asked if I was listening.

"I need to know what you're capable of already. At your core," he said, pulling a chalk from his pocket and drawing a table on a chalkboard that sat on the wall. I'd never seen it before, so it must have been something Herrington brought in. In each row were 'speed', 'strength' and 'stamina'. It seemed as though he was going to grade my basic abilities first, before deciding on his method of building my body. "Let's warm up. Copy me," he said, placing the chalk down.

  • Caution to the wind   Training: Part One

Artemis White's POVI stood in the garden, Khione, Major Herrington, Miguel, Maria, Sebastian and the team behind me. They were silent, as was I.Ayame Rivers stood in front of me, her eyes observing me carefully. "The first test is a Trial of Will", she said slowly. "Walk the firewalk. Show me that you can endure the pain, push through at all costs. Only those with a strong will can face their future properly," she continued. Then, she raised a hand and swiftly, in one fluid motion, jagged and uneven rocks catching fire, coal burning on them, under them and between them. It definitely looked painful. But so was having my back slowly shredded by a rusty, blunt dagger. "Arte, this is insane, you can't-" Khione said frantically. I turned to her and smiled, "I can do it, Khi. You don't trust me?" I asked. Khione looked at me, stunned. "I-I trust you, but...You're going to get hurt, Arte. You just came out of the hospital, not even two hours ago!" I turned my head to Ayame, "No need to

  • Caution to the wind   Returning home

Third-person POVArtemis' eyes fluttered. She winced, even against the pale splash of colour. The world was no longer a void. Colour had returned, but there was still a residual blur. Her fingers brushed against the crisp edge of a blanket, and she realised: she could see it. A thin sliver of sky peeked through frosted glass, paling from ink-blue to soft lavender.A medical chart rested on the bedside table - Dr. Stone’s scrawl of eye-test results. Artemis propped herself on one elbow, blinking to clear the hospital-grade sterility. The muted hum of monitors became visible ribbons of light dancing on their screens.Heart pounding, she flexed her toes inside the sterile black socks. Shapes took form around her: a framed sketch of the White crest, a bouquet of pale roses in a glass vase, the faint glow of an emergency lamp in the corner. Her sight felt fragile, as though she were peering through the thinnest pane of crystal. Then came sound: soft footsteps in the corridor, the measured

Third-person POVAlec stood leaning against the wall, staring at Artemis, who was still deep asleep. It was just shy of 6 am.Killian sat in the chair beside her bed, going through paperwork, and Helios was still curled protectively around his sister, the two of them snoozing peacefully. Alec's phone pinged, drawing the attention of both Alec and Killian. He quickly checked it and received an ETA for the team: 5 minutes out. He straightened up and walked over to Killian, whispering that he needed to go and pick his team up from the entrance. Killian gave a sharp nod and went back to his paperwork, his eyes narrowed at it as if he wanted to pummel it. Alec walked out of the room and down the hall to the elevator...But he paused outside a room with a blank name slate. The door was closed, but he couldn't stop his curiosity. Quietly, he opened the door and cautiously walked in. Lying there was Apollo. He was beautiful, so much like his mother. Alec frowned at how thin he was, thanks t

Alec Rivers POVI'd be lying if I said this entire plan of Arte's didn't set me on edge. She was playing a dangerous game. Even so, someone in her position could afford to play games, even if they were life-threatening. In fact, I'd even go as far as to say that playing games would forever be part of her life. From what I understood during the debriefing, 'Arte Jones' is...Quite typical. For her status, I mean. If you look at it from an outside point of view, she's a regular sixteen-year-old girl who has a wonderful family that adores her, she tries hard at school, and she's popular. It's no surprise. Despite her cold demeanour at school, she very much likes to help everyone she can. And, quite a few of her classmates, when interviewed, said that she always gave good advice, was great at listening, and often went out of her way, even for strangers. Does that sound like an Heiress to the biggest, most ruthless underworld family in Europe? The White family themselves downplay their

  • Caution to the wind   The game is afoot

Artemis White's POVI sat quietly at a polished oak table in the private room of the restaurant I promised to take Cole to. I'd been waiting for thirty minutes, and the hidden reporters had captured it all. In my earpiece, I could hear Ace snorting as he watched the live reports. Given how I looked and my previously reported injuries, the media were painting me as a pitiful and dedicated girlfriend. It's exactly what I wanted. But in that silence, I couldn't help but think about the recent events of my life. It felt like everything was falling apart - Cole cheating, my kidnapping and torture, my injuries and blindness. It was...Enough to break me. But I couldn't let it. Not now. Not yet. I had too much to do. I know for a fact I looked the picture of innocence and elegance. Ace had done a wonderful job, and my posture and expression only fueled the fire. I sat quietly, looking anxious that he wouldn't arrive, my hands resting in my lap as my fingertips delicately traced the fabric o
