FAITH

Nova smiled at me, and I could see that she was hiding something, but I didn’t push her on it. Her secrets could remain her own, just as mine could.

Still, at least one person knew more about my secrets than I did, and I needed to find them and get more information.

“I’m going to go talk to Juliana. I’ll catch up with you later.” I said to Nova, and she looked over her shoulder at the pack house just as Kaiden stepped out. He didn’t have anything with him, but as Jackson followed on his heels, listening to every word Kaiden said closely, I knew he was getting ready to leave.

I didn’t know what my place was in this and whether or not I should just wave or actually say goodbye face to face. I wasn’t even sure if he wanted me to.

He didn’t look uncomfortable as his eyes landed on me. In fact, he smiled, but I was still tense.

I had already been heading back toward the pack house, so I couldn’t just stop or turn around and walk back to Nova without making it obvious that I was a

FAITHI paused in front of the bathroom mirror, my naked body on display as the water warmed. It wasn’t the worst I had looked, but it also wasn’t the best. The burns I had suffered were mostly gone, but there were red splotches over my body where they had once been. They were fading slowly but surely, but as they moved down my body, they got worse. It looked as if the pack doctor or Nova had paid extra attention to applying the medicine to my face and neck because they were the least noticeable there but grew darker once they reached my chest where the amulet was.The metal was dull, faded almost, and I turned away from the mirror to avoid looking at it. I didn’t want to leave anymore, not just because I had nowhere else to go, but because I was growing to trust the people here. Still, I also didn’t want to continue feeling like a prisoner, and for as long as the chain was wrapped around my neck, that was precisely what I felt like. I stepped into the shower slowly, expecting t

FAITHI blinked slowly awake as the ceiling fan above me started to come into focus. My body felt so stiff and sore that I didn’t need the memories to come back to me. I knew exactly what was happening. I had felt this once before, and nothing had changed. It was as awful then as it is now. “Remind me to smash that T.V. later,” I said and felt someone shift on the bed beside me. “Faith! You’re awake.” Nova’s voice was thick with sleep, and I wanted to take a pillow and smother her with it for sleeping with the television on.If she hadn’t, I might have still been sleeping myself. “How long has it been?” I asked, knowing it had taken several days last time, and this one wasn’t nearly as bad as the first time. The first time, I hadn’t wanted to stop. I had just wanted to be free and had been determined to get the amulet off or die trying, and I almost did. “About a week, but your morning breath says two.” She answered, flopping onto her back again, and I rolled my eyes, tempted to

KAIDENEvery few seconds, I had to pause to scan my surroundings before my eyes went right back down to the ground to avoid the runes and traps that had been planted. They had added several since my last visit, and I wasn’t willing to risk being blown up when thousands of people were counting on me back at home. I tried to feel for Faith, needing to ensure she was okay. For the most part, I trusted Nova and had no doubt she wouldn’t betray me again by trying to hand Faith over, but I still needed confirmation that everything was okay. “If you’re trying to use your pack bond, your mind link won’t work here.” A woman called out, and I looked up to see the tip of a tree branch shaking around fifty paces ahead while the others around it remained still. After moving closer and around the few trees blocking my path, I could see the stranger leaning up against the trunk, with her side to me and her legs crossed on the branch beneath her. “I thought I still had about two hundred yards be

NOVA“I’ve never seen anything like that,” I said, walking around Faith to get a look at the side of her head where my foot had connected, but her hair was covering her face, preventing me from seeing what damage I may have caused.I was just grateful that her chest was rising and falling evenly. At least she wasn’t having a panic attack and hurting herself anymore.“I have,” Juliana whispered, but she didn’t sound in awe like she usually would have after seeing something extraordinary. She sounded horrified. "But I've seen it only once.” “Only once?” I asked, knowing she had lived with the witches for a long time before choosing our side in the war. Surely, she would have seen other witches use magic like that during her time with them. She had been an enforcer, after all. There hadn’t been many that had switched, but those that had were fiercely protected by their packs. They were usually hunted down and killed if anyone found out about them. “It was a long time ago.” She said, s

FAITHI tried my hardest to respect Juliana's privacy and not look around. Still, she had so many magical trinkets around the room that I couldn’t help but give in to my curiosity and look around until she gestured for us to sit at a little dining table. “How can I help you?” She asked. “You said when I knocked Sable off Kaiden to save him that it hadn’t been your magic impacting her. It had been mine.” I clarified, wanting to bring Nova up to speed so she understood why I had been trying to use my magic on her father. “That’s what I said.” “How would it be possible for me to have used magic without Kaiden controlling it? I tried. I couldn’t use it on my own.” It was embarrassing to admit I had failed.“He was in danger. Perhaps even unconscious Kaiden knew he was in danger and channeled your magic.” Juliana explained, but it still didn’t make sense. “But I wasn’t touching her, and if I had done it, I would have to be touching her.” “That I’m not familiar with. I do not have the
