Nikolas repeatedly read the note that Brooklyn left for him. His eyes were glued to the words,

“If you're mine, why did you leave me, Brooklyn?” He whispered, his voice cracking with the effort it took him to speak. His heart was heavy as lead, his throat choked with unshed tears and he had no idea why he felt so heartbroken. It felt as if his heart had been wrenched away and taken to San Francisco.
