MasukNEXT MORNING
As Grayson walked into the kitchen, the scent of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the air. Lena sat by the counter, gripping her mug tightly. She was dressed in a brown sweater and a white skirt with some flower prints on it, and her hair was tied in a tight bun.
"Good morning." Grayson greeted softly, sitting down on a chair beside where she stood. He stared up at her face, studying her carefully, his eyes clouded with concern.
"Morning." Lena replied slowly without bothering to glance at him, her voice cold.
Grayson leaned forward, as he drummed his fingers against the table.
"We didn't exactly finish our conversation last night." Grayson stated.
Lena took a sip of her coffee with an unreasonable expression on her face. "There is nothing to talk about." She replied.
"There is everything to talk about." He countered, his voice steady and firm.
"You're shutting me out these days, Lena. I can feel it, I just don't know why. What did I do wrong?" He asked calmly, his eyes fixed on her.
Lena let out a heavy sigh as she placed the mug down a little louder and harder than she intended.
"Grayson, not now. Please."
“Not now?” He frowned, frustration creeping into his tone. “That’s all you’ve been saying for weeks. I’m your husband, Lena. I deserve to know what’s going on.”
Her hand curled into a fist at her side, but she forced herself to remain calm. “Can’t you just let it go? For once?”
Grayson’s lips pressed into a thin line, and he looked away, clearly hurt by her words and actions.
EVENING
Lena sat on the edge of the bed, staring blankly at the floor, as she gave second thoughts to the choice she was about to make.
The door opened and Grayson stepped inside, a warm hopeful smile plastered across his face. He carried a very small neatly wrapped box in his hands which Lena failed to notice.
“Hey,” he said gently, approaching her.
Lena glanced up, her expression guarded. “What is it?”
Grayson sat beside her, holding out the box. “I wanted to show you something. It’s for our anniversary in two weeks.”
Lena stiffened. “Anniversary?” She asked.
“Yeah,” he said, his voice laced with a quietly.
“Three years. I thought we could do something special. Maybe go back to the place where we had our first date? Or...” He trailed off, watching her closely.
“Grayson,” Lena interrupted, her tone cold and detached.
He blinked, surprised by the sharpness in her voice. “What?”
“I’m not interested,” she said bluntly, standing and turning away from him.
His heart sank. “Not interested? Lena, it’s our anniversary. We’ve always celebrated it.” He stated.
She crossed her arms, refusing to meet his gaze. “Not this year. I have too much going on.”
Grayson’s shoulders sagged, the small box in his hand feeling heavier than before. “Lena, is this about us? About something I did?”
“It’s not about you,” she said flatly, walking toward the closet. “I just don’t want to celebrate, okay?”
His grip tightened around the box. “You don’t even care anymore, do you?”
She froze for a moment but didn’t respond. Instead, she turned back to face him, her expression hard. “We have a business dinner tonight with a client. Be ready by seven.”
Grayson stood, his frustration bubbling to the surface. “That’s it? A business dinner? No explanation, no conversation, just another cold dismissal?” He asked.
Lena looked at him, her eyes unreadable. “You said you wanted to talk? Fine. Let’s talk later. But tonight, we focus on the client.”
“Right,” he said bitterly, slipping the box into his pocket. “Because that’s what we do best, isn’t it? Focus on business and ignore everything else.”
She didn’t reply, instead walking past him toward the bathroom. Grayson stared after her, his heart heavy with questions he wasn’t sure he wanted the answers to anymore.
NIGHT: BLUE VIEW RESTAURANT
"Thank you, it's a pleasure working with you Mr. James." Lena said as she shook hands with the middle aged man.
"You too." He nodded.
"Bye Lena, bye Grayson." Mrs James said as she stood up from her chair to leave with her husband.
"That went well." Lena said as soon as they left, a genuine smile plastered across her face.
Grayson glanced at her without saying a word. He wasn't surprised that her business made her so happy, after all that was one of the main reasons she got married to him; to be able to claim her family's business.
"I'm going to the rest room." Lena said, getting up from where she sat beside Grayson.
"Alright. I'll be waiting here." Grayson muttered as he watched her leave.
When Lena was done in the rest room, she washed her hands then proceeded to leave, just as she pushed the door open, she came face to face with a man and she immediately froze on her spot as she dared not to look him in the eye.
Grayson glanced at the time on his wrist watch, Lena was staying longer than she normally did in the restroom. Just as he stood up to go look for her, he saw her approaching him with a hard look, but she quickly smiled as soon as she saw him, and Grayson did not fail to notice that.
"I was just about to come find you." He said as she stood before him.
Lena replied with a small nod, but her next actions shocked Grayson as he wasn't expecting it.
She kissed him quickly on his lips before engulfing him in a hug. Grayson froze for a moment, but relaxed and hugged her back.
Grayson held her tightly, as though sensing her desire to leave, Lena bit her lip to suppress a sob. This was the last time she’d let herself feel this close to him. Tonight, it would all be over.
Lena sat in the backyard, a soft breeze playing with her hair as she rubbed her belly. She was now seven months pregnant, and the baby kicked more often these days. It was a reminder that soon, she and Grayson would have a little one to hold in their arms.Grayson had been extra careful with her lately, making sure she didn’t lift a finger. He barely let her do anything on her own, which sometimes made her laugh.Just this morning, she had tried to carry a small box, and he had rushed over like she was about to lift a mountain.“Lena, stop,” he had said, taking the box from her hands. “I told you, no lifting.”“It’s just a box of baby clothes, Grayson.”“I don’t care. You sit. I’ll do it.”She had rolled her eyes but smiled as he carefully placed the box down, arranging everything as if the clothes were made of glass. Now, as she sat outside, she could hear him in the kitchen, talking to someone on the phone. Probably about work. He still ran Blackwood Empire, but lately, he had been
ONE MONTH LATERLena sat in her office, staring at the framed award on her desk. The golden plaque gleamed under the soft light, reflecting the name she had worked so hard to build, Carter’s Enterprises: Most Influential Company of the Year. She traced her fingers over the engraved letters, still in disbelief. A few months ago, she had only hoped to make it to the Top 100 companies in the country. Now, Carter’s Enterprises was in the Top 20. It felt unreal, but the numbers didn’t lie. Their sales had skyrocketed, their influence had spread, and investors were eager to work with them. They had made it.The collaboration with Blackwood Empire had been a turning point. Working alongside Grayson and his company had not only boosted their reputation but had also made them stronger in the industry. The success of their joint launch had been beyond anyone’s expectations. Because of that, they had won multiple awards:* Most Influential Company of the Year* Most Influential Collaboration (Bl
Lena sat on the couch for a long time, staring at the empty plate in front of her. She had eaten, she had rested, but she still felt heavy inside. Maybe it was the silence. Maybe it was the weight of everything that had happened. She let out a deep breath and stood up, stretching her arms above her head. Staying indoors all day wasn’t helping. She needed to clear her mind.A walk. Yes, that’s what she needed.Lena grabbed her black pants and pulled them on before slipping into a white hoodie. It was simple, comfortable. She tied her hair into a loose ponytail and checked herself in the mirror. Her eyes still looked tired, but at least the fresh air might help. She picked up her phone and sent a quick message to Grayson.Lena: Going for a walk. Don’t worry, I won’t do anything stressful. She didn’t wait for his reply before slipping her phone into her pocket and heading out.The moment she stepped outside, a cool breeze brushed against her skin. The city was busy as usual, cars honking
The morning light streamed through the curtains, painting the room in soft gold. Lena stirred in bed, blinking slowly as the memories of last night rushed back in. Her chest tightened. The pain wasn’t as painful as before, but it was still there, sitting heavy in her heart.Grayson sat beside her on the edge of the bed, already dressed for work. His hand rested on her belly, his thumb moving in slow, gentle circles."You sure you'll be okay?" he asked, searching her face.Lena forced a small smile. "I’ll be fine. You should go."He didn’t look convinced."I mean it," she added, squeezing his hand. "Don't worry about me. Just focus on work."Grayson sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I just don’t want you stressing yourself.""I won’t," she promised.Still, he hesitated before finally leaning down to kiss her forehead. "I’ll be back early," he murmured. "Call me if you need anything."She nodded, watching as he grabbed his keys and headed for the door. The moment it closed behin
Lena’s eyes fluttered open, the harsh hospital lights making her squint. A dull ache sat at the back of her head, her body felt heavy, and for a moment, she struggled to remember where she was. Then it all came rushing back, Ayla, the fire, Kael’s broken voice, the moment everything had shattered. She swallowed hard, her throat dry. As she shifted slightly, she felt warmth against her hand. Turning her head, she found Grayson sitting beside her, his head resting on his arm. His fingers were curled gently around hers, as if afraid to let go.His suit was wrinkled, his tie loose, dark circles beneath his eyes showing just how long he’d been there. She tried to move her fingers, and immediately, he stirred. His eyes blinked open, slightly unfocused, before locking onto her face.“You’re awake,” he breathed, sitting up quickly. Relief washed over his tired features.Lena swallowed, trying to push past the lump in her throat. “How long have I been out?”Grayson reached for a cup of water o
HALLWAYLena wiped at her swollen eyes, her face pale and streaked with tears. She hugged herself, her body trembling. Kael, on the other hand, looked like a shadow of himself, hollow, detached, his gaze unfocused as he stared at the ground. His phone buzzed in his pocket.Kael ignored it at first, the vibration barely registering in his fogged mind. But it persisted, relentless. With a tired sigh, he fished the phone out, glancing at the screen. It was his secretary. He almost declined the call, but something in his gut told him not to.“This is Kael,” he answered, voice rough and broken.“Sir,” his secretary’s voice trembled on the other end. “I’m sorry to call you like this... but I thought you should know right away.”Kael rubbed his temple, his head pounding. “What is it?” he muttered, his patience fraying.“It’s your brother,” she said, her voice laced with caution. “He was in a serious accident tonight. A collision. He’s in a coma.”Kael stiffened, the words slamming into him l
