Serena's POV

The moment we crept through the back door, my heart was pounding hard in my chest.

Damien was ahead of us, his steps were silent, and I followed behind him closely, my hand clung to Sophia's cloth, to make sure we were together.

Earlier, the armed men had broken through the front door, and shot rapidly hoping for a kill.

We ran through another street, it was quiet, like people knew what was going on and hid in their apartments.

We ran until we reached a small building at the far end of the street.

Sophia banged on the door with shaky hands.

Within moments, an old man answered and opened it.

“Uncle Charles,” she called as she tried to catch her breath, “Please, let us in.”

The man’s eyes widened when he saw us, "Sophia? Please come in," he said.

Without delay, he opened the door wider and we went in.

We went straight to his living room, our body still trembling from the traumatic near death experience we just had.

Sophia explained everything to her uncle.

Serena's POVI wrapped my arms around him reflexively, my face against his chest. His heart was slow and strong. For one second, there was only that, the two of us, the hard beat that made the world not quite so crazy."Don't tell me," I whispered, my voice buried in the cloth of his shirt, "that you're going to leave me alone to handle all of this."He braced, then pulled away just far enough to look down at me. His expression was tranquil, but his eyes were sharp. "You don't need me anymore, Serena."The words stung like a small punch. Not because they weren't true, I had grown stronger, more deadly, but because they carried the tone of a verdict, a shutting of the book on something I wasn't ready to finish.I had opened my mouth to protest, to explain to him that I did need him, that I wanted him present, but he got there first."I'm not saying I won't be here," he told me in a rush, catching the flash of terror on my face. "I'll be here. But you're not that helpless woman you used

Serena's POVWe followed Paula down a long corridor lined with glass offices. Every employee who saw us paused for a moment, then looked down or nodded respectfully. The mood changed around us, the soft hum of conversation clearing to silence and nervous shuffling.I could practically feel the tension filling the floor. The heir of Diamond City walking through their hallway wasn't an everyday occurrence. The living room was spacious, dark, comfortable-appearing chairs, a table overflowing with magazines, and a massive window overlooking the skyline. Paula pointed to it restlessly."Do please make yourselves at home, ma'am. Would you like something to drink? Coffee, tea—""Water is fine," I said."At once."She bobbed slightly and hurried off.The moment the door closed, I exhaled. Damien reclined on the couch, looking at me with that inscrutable half-smile of his."You're plotting something," he remarked."Clearly," I replied, sitting opposite him. "I told Alexa I'd speak to the MD. I

Serena's POVShe appeared surprised for a moment before smiling graciously. "Hello.""Work here?" I inquired."Yes," she said. "I'm part of the administrative staff. Why are you asking?""Simply curious." I tilted my head to one side. "What's your name?""Alexa," she said curtly."Alexa…," I drew out, the name slipping easily from my mouth. "Pretty name. You don't mind me asking, but how long have you been working here?""Around six years now," she smiled faintly. "It's. difficult sometimes." She then gazed at me inquiringly. "Do you work here as well?""Sort of," I answered bluntly. "Name's Serena.""Oh," she smiled politely. "Nice meeting you, Serena."She was already heading away, but my eyes were drawn to something on the paper in her hand, a name in uppercase at the top: Calloway Company. Before she could take another step ahead, I hurried. "Wait, what's that file?"She faced me, eyebrows knitted in slight frowns. "This?""Yes," I gestured to it. "Calloway Company. What's going o

Serena's POVA chill of unease traveled along my chest. "You think he could be in cahoots with Vincent?"Damien gave me a fast glance before refocusing on the road. "Maybe. Or maybe he is in cahoots with someone who is. Either way, keep an eye on him. Don't play down the people around you, Serena. Most times betrayal isn't from the bad guy, it's from the person smiling in your face."I sighed, staring out the window as buildings blurred past. “I’m tired of betrayal, Damien. I’ve had enough to last me a lifetime.”He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he reached over and lowered the volume of the radio. That's exactly why you have to outsmart all of them. Vincent is only one of your issues. Diamond Company's board will also test you. Fifty percent of them still think that you don't deserve where you are."I smiled weakly. "Then I'll enjoy proving them wrong."."Good," he replied, showing a flash of a smile. "Because once Vincent makes that exchange with Diamond City, it will give him

Serena's POVElla pulled out her tablet and opened it. "We wait for twelve hours or something. I've left a trace on one of my contacts. By evening, we'll have her name, her communication records, and possibly an address of the last time she saw Vincent's goons."Sophia whistled softly. "You act fast."Ella smiled weakly. "I don't like wasting time. Especially when the game is for a man like Vincent."I gazed at her for a long time. Her confidence was reassuring and disquieting.I had known she was smart, but this Ella, unattached, focused, streamlined, was a stranger to me. It was as if having a stranger look out of a face that was known.Damien leaned forward, his forearms braced on the table. "Good job. With that name, we'll handle the rest."Ella nodded.Sophia's curiosity got the best of her. "Wait… so all this time you've been working together with the CIA and all, why didn't you say anything?"Ella smiled. "Would I have believed you then? And all those times, I didn't even know

Serena's POVHe smiled, the line of his mouth trembling. "I'll take that as a compliment."Sophia got to her feet, stacking the plates. "Okay, planner and avenger, scheming later. Breakfast is officially over."Ella giggled and moved to assist her. I lingered another moment, watching them stand up and clear the table, their laughter drifting gently. For one brief moment, I wanted to be like them. I had once laughed like them, before betrayal became my shadow.Damien got up from his chair and inserted his hands deep into the pockets of his jeans. "We'll talk more later," he whispered. "After Ella brings the papers."I nodded. "Fine. Just get her out of there without being seen."He grinned at me. "You worry too much.""I've earned that right," I growled. He smiled quietly and headed for the door. "Then perhaps let me bear some of that burden for you."I said nothing. He disappeared, his footsteps receding down the corridor, leaving me to my own thoughts.Sophia looked at me from the co
