Serena's POV

As I was about to turn the corner, I could hear footsteps, and then Sophia came around, her eyes a bit wide, face flushed as if she had just had an odd experience.

"There you are," I said in an attempt to sound relaxed. "What took so long?"

Sophia gazed up at me, attempting a smile. "Oh, uh, he was still getting dressed. Took him long enough."

I shot her an eyebrow just a fraction. "And?"

"And what?"

"Nothing," I said, swiveling back to face the table. "Let's eat."

We had dinner at the dinner table and I did not take my eyes off her. I kept staring at her for any indication, or sign of what actually held her in Damien's bedroom for such a long time but she looked as innocent as a dove.

Just as I and Sophia were getting into the seafood, Damien appeared, fresh-dressed, with a whiff of top-shelf cologne and an unreadable expression on his face. Cool, calm, unreadable, stereotypical Damien.

"Something definitely smells incredible," he remarked, gliding into the chair across

Alexender's POV I massaged my temple and breathed in a slow manner, attempting to ground myself. Pristine sat next to me, silently at first, her legs crossed prettily, her eyes set on her phone as the vehicle traveled.I stood before her. "I forgot to ask, why did you attend court yesterday without consulting me?"She would not lift her eyes. "Is it a crime to attend court on impulse now?"I took a deep breath. "You know that is not what I mean. You could have just let me know. We could have gone together. As colleagues."She still didn't look at me, her expression unreadable. "I was having a better time alone," she said to me in a flat tone. "Especially after that stunt you pulled in there."She cut deep. I adjusted my tie even though it didn't require it. "You're upset, then? You said you weren't."Pristine smiled faintly, too calmly. "Not upset. Like I said, you're predictable.""I'm glad it's over now," I told her. "At least she did get what she wanted. Even if she denied mine."

Serena's POV"I, uh…" I began, then promptly dropped the phone onto the table like it was a hot coal. "I knocked. You didn't answer. I was worried."He raised an eyebrow and stepped further into the room. "So going through my phone was the next logical thing to do?"I wished I could disappear. The floor would just be so pleasant and gulp me down."I didn't mean to… I just noticed the message come through. From Pristine."He took the phone, examined it, then shrugged. "Nothing bad. We're working on a project.""You're working on a project with her?" I asked before I could stop myself. He picked up on the sharpness in my tone. I did too."You appear upset," he said, steadying his hair with a towel.I spun around, faking interest in the wall. "I'm not. Why would I be? It's your phone. Your business."He smiled humorously. "You say it, but your expression says otherwise."I clenched my fists at my sides. Why was he always so calm? Why did he never react the way that I did?"Fine, I just d

Serena's POVI stretched myself on the bed, the soft bedsheet still covering me, as I blinked to the morning sun shining through the big window. Everywhere just felt calm, like all the troubles from yesterday had disappeared while I was sleeping. My body felt light, and I was happy. I didn't even know why.I'd had no time to contemplate any further on that before Sophia's voice cut into the room."Well, well, someone was smiling in her sleep this morning."I turned and noticed her lying along the couch, folded-up legs tucked under her, a mischievous smile creasing her face."Who?" I asked, feigning confusion."You, of course," she giggled. "Serena Everly was smiling like a schoolgirl expecting her first kiss."I rolled my eyes, laughing. "I don't even remember dreaming about anything.""Liar," she teased, grabbing a pillow to hug. "I tried to wake you up last night to eat, but you were dead to the world."“I was drained," I complained, stretching my arms over my head. "I think all of

Serena's POV"I'm sorry, what?" She went on the defensive for a moment, biting down hard on her bottom lip. "I mean, I know you and Damien have something going on. Or had something going on. I'm not even sure what the deal is with you two anymore, but I've been giving it some thought and-""Do you want to date Damien?" I break in, still in shock by the words. She nodded slowly. "Not date, really. Just, maybe see where things are going. He's been a good thing to me, Serena. He's protective, kind. And with everything that's been going on lately, I find myself, feeling things."I wanted to say no. I wanted to tell her that she couldn't. That it wasn't right. But what right did I have?Damien was not mine. I had spent the last few days pushing him away. He could be with whom he wanted. Even if that were my best friend."Are you serious about him?" I asked.Sophia shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe. That's why I asked you. I don't want to tread on your toes. If there is something still going

  • Chasing Back The Woman He Destroyed   Chapter 74

Serena's POVMy breath hitched. A burning wave of disbelief washed over me. "What?" I managed, my voice barely above a whisper. "I never said that.""You admitted to faking it," he replied, his voice cool, almost detached."I admitted to pretending not to be scared," I retorted, defensively. "That is not admitting that I still love Alexander."He had no ready reply. His eyes dropped to the floor as though pondering my statement. As if giving me a chance to correct myself. But I had nothing to correct. Finally, he lifted his gaze and said, "Then answer the damn question."My throat tightened again. There was a prolonged silence between us. I tore my gaze from his eyes, unable to hold his, but his voice did not waver."Why would you think I still loved Alexander?" I challenged, more defensively than I'd meant to. "Is that what this is? Is that why you brought him here? To see if I still had feelings for him?"He didn't answer. He just leaned back and sipped his wine again, as though he
