Brent POV

The first thing I noticed was the woodsmoke and smell of wet earth and something that smelled like an animal underneath it.

The second thing I noticed was the pain in my wrists. The cuffs they had on me weren’t metal, it was a rope but it burned like metal. Every time I moved, they tightened.

When I opened my eyes, I realized I wasn't back in the van, or anywhere in the city.

I was in a room made of stone and timber, with one barred window high up and no door I could see. The air was cold and my shirt was gone. My jeans were torn and my confidence? That was gone too.

I’m Brent Carter. I run three clubs. I know people. I have money. I don’t get scared but at this moment, I was scared because this man standing over me didn't look human.

The one in front had his chest covered in old marks that looked like claw marks. He watched me the way you watch a dog that might bite.

“Brent Carter,” he said in a sharp tone that didn't sound like human cadence. “You’ve been looking for Helena.”

My mouth was dry. “Who are you?”

He didn’t answer. He just crouched, so we were eye level.

“We are not human,” he said, like he was telling me the weather. “And you will tell us everything you know about The Marked One.”

The Marked One. That’s what the guys at the warehouse called her.

I laughed, my voice coming out shaky. “You’re crazy. She’s just a girl. She works at—”

The wolf moved instantly, one second he was crouching. The next his hand was around my throat, lifting me off the cot. My feet kicked the air, the rope on my wrists searing.

“Do not lie to me,” he said. “We smelled you on her. In her car. At the crash. You were there.”

I choked. “Jarrett— Jarrett did it. He’s a freak. Not her.”

“Jarrett,” the wolf repeated. Like he was tasting the name. “And Helena. What do you know about her?”

Everything. I knew everything about her so I told him everything I knew including the scar she had on her wrist.

The moment I said “scar,” the wolf’s grip loosened.

“A scar,” he said. “On her wrist.”

“Yeah her left wrist. Why—”

He dropped me. I hit the floor hard, gasping.

The wolf stood and turned to the shadows in the corner of the room, where two other wolves had been standing silently the whole time.

“She’s marked,” he said. “It’s her.”

One of them bowed his head. “Alpha.”

Alpha. Oh my god!

I started shaking. I couldn’t stop. “Please. I don’t know anything else. Jarrett’s protecting her. He’s— he’s one of you, isn’t he? That’s why he—”

The Alpha didn’t look at me again. “Put him in the lower cells. Feed him. He may be useful later.”

Two wolves grabbed me. I tried to fight. I’m 6’1. I go to the gym three times a week but it doesn't matter here. They moved me like I weighed nothing.

As they dragged me out, I heard the Alpha say one last thing.

“Find out who’s forcing the awakening. And find the other one. Jarrett.”

The door — a slab of iron I hadn’t seen before — slid shut and everywhere was covered with darkness.

Helena POV

“I saw your claws.”

The words came out flat. Because if I let any emotion into them I’d scream.

Jarrett was standing by the broken window with his back to me.

The penthouse was still a huge mess with broken glass scattered across the floor and blood spilling from two dead men on the floor.

“Helena—”

“Don’t.” I cut him off. “Don’t lie. Don’t ‘it’s not what it looks like.’ I saw your eyes. I saw your hands. I saw what happened when that man touched me.”

He turned slowly. His eyes were still glowing gold faintly like the light hadn’t fully left them.

“I’m a werewolf,” he said.

Just like that. Not even a preamble or softening it.

The air left my lungs.

“A werewolf,” I repeated. “Like in movies. Full moon. Howling and people dying!.”

“Not like that,” he said quickly. “Not all of it. We don’t lose control if we’re trained. Not if we—”

“Stop.” I held up my hand. The one with the mark. It was still tender, and still warm. “You let me think you were human. You let me ride in your car. You let me sleep in your apartment.”

“I was trying to protect you,” he said. “From them. From this.”

“Protect me?” My voice broke. “By lying?”

“By keeping you safe until the time was right.”

“And when was the right time, Jarrett? When I’m 30? When I’m dead?”

He flinched.

I walked to the door. My legs felt like water but I made them move. I couldn’t stay here. Not with him. Not with the smell of blood and the way my wrist was buzzing under my sleeve.

“Where are you going?” he asked.

“Away from you.”

“You can’t. They know you’re awake now. The rogues. The Alpha. If you leave, they’ll take you.”

I stopped with my hand on the doorknob. “Then let them. Because right now you’re the scariest thing in this room.”

I didn’t look back when I walked out. He called after me but I paid him no mind as I walked out quickly, fighting back the tears that threatened to cascade down my cheeks.

Jarrett's povI was sitting in the chair next to Helena's bed because I hadn't slept and I wasn't about to, not when her breathing kept catching like she was drowning on dry land, and then she woke up screaming like something was tearing her apart from the inside out and I didn't know how to stop it. Her skin was splitting along her ribs and shoulders, thin red lines opening up where fur tried to push through. I could see it, I could see the white of bone and then the dark of blood and then something else underneath, something that wasn't human. She was burning up, 104 and climbing, the thermometer kept beeping and the nurses kept looking at me like I did it. "Get her to St Mercy," I said, and my voice came out wrong, too rough, "now". St Mercy was a human hospital, white tiles and that fake lemon smell that made me sick. The Council law said no humans for wolf injuries but Council law wasn't going to keep her breathing, so I carried her, and wrapped her in a blanket because sh

Helena's pov The air down here tasted like rust and antiseptic.I shouldn't have been behind that glass. Council protocol said family is a liability. But Jarrett pulled rank. Or maybe he broke it. With him, the difference had always been thin.In the room below, Vanessa sat at a steel table. Silver cuffs locked her wrists to the bolts. They were already working. Her skin was red and blistered where the metal touched her. Blood ran in thin lines down her forearms and dripped onto the concrete. She looked small and nothing like the woman who had smiled at my baby shower and told me the cramps were normal.“Start talking,” the Elder said. His voice was flat. He wasn’t asking.Vanessa’s eyes darted to the camera. To me. She knew I was there. “I can’t—”“You can,” Jarrett said beside me. His voice didn’t shake. That was worse. “Or we let the silver do the rest.”A sob broke out of her. It was ugly. Real. “Okay! Okay, please. Take them off.”The Elder didn’t move. “Talk.”And she did. Word

Helena's POV I was in the ice rink alone at 2am when it happened. It was just me, the Zamboni lines and the sounds of my skates carving circles because I couldn’t sleep. My phone lit up. When I picked it up, I didn't realize there was forty seven texts waiting for me all from people I hadn’t talked to in a year. I couldn't help notice Mara's text message asking if I was truly okay. Of course I wasn't. But as I scrolled through the text messages, I realized she wasn't just asking about my well being. It had something to do with Vanessa. I clicked on the message from an unknown number and that was when I saw it. Vanessa was standing there with a cream dress and a hand on her stomach with Brent’s hands on her shoulders like he owned her. I read the text below. They were expecting a child together, they had lost one before and this one was a miracle. The rink went silent. Even the hum of the lights sounded loud.I pressed my palm to my own stomach. The thin, white scar was still t

Vanessa's POVI picked the dress on purpose because it had cream silk and an empire waist. It had the kind of cut that whispered instead of scream. It was tight enough that the cameras would ask questions in the comments, and loose enough that I could still say “oh this old thing” and laugh like it was nothing. My hair was down, combed straight and glossy. I spent 40 minutes on it. I applied a bright red lipstick on my lips before putting on the diamond studs that Brent bought me last Christmas when he was still pretending he loved me more than the headlines and the brand deals. The balcony of the Langley penthouse was perfect. The golden hour bled across the city skyline behind me. You could see the river and the stadium lights in the distance. A ring light was hidden in the potted ficus so I wouldn’t look washed out. I’d told the housekeeper to leave it there. She did without asking why.Brent stood behind the camera with his phone in his hand. He hated doing this. He said it fel

Helena’s POVThe buzzer hit and the world went white. Not literally, but the noise, the lights, the confetti cannons from the rafters all slammed into me at once. I stood behind the bench with my clipboard still in my hand like an idiot, because for three periods I’d been timing line changes and trying not to throw up from nerves. Now the clipboard was useless. The game was over. We won.The team poured onto the ice. Their helmets were off, they threw their gloves, grown men were screaming like kids. Jarrett was in the middle of it, his jersey was soaked, his hair was plastered to his forehead, and that grin breaking across his face that I’d seen in practice but never like this. A reporter shoved a mic in my face. “Ms. Helena! As team manager, how does it feel?” I opened my mouth and nothing came out. Then I laughed. “It feels like we earned it. Every single person in that room earned it.”They let me go. I was supposed to stay professional, stay on the sidelines. Be the executiv

Helena’s POVThe first thing I noticed when I stepped into the studio was the smell of cold coffee, hairspray, and that faint plastic scent of studio lights that had been on too long. It smelled like every interview I’d ever done, except this one felt different. This one felt like a trap.“Helena, we’re so excited to have you,” the producer said, touching my elbow like we were old friends. “Just a quick chat that'll be light and fun. We’ll talk about the reforms, the new policies, and… you know… Jarrett’s run.”She said his name and my jaw ticked. I smiled anyway. I had gotten very good at smiling when I wanted to flip a table.“Of course,” I said. “Whatever you want.”That was a lie. Three months earlier the league had been on fire. Emails had been leaked, executives were fired, and players were caught in contracts that shouldn’t have existed. I was the one who walked into the boardroom with a 200-page report and didn’t blink when half the room tried to call me emotional. I was th
