Chapter 2

مؤلف: Cutie Kitty
I waited at the restaurant we'd agreed on for two hours. All I got at the end of it was a phone call from Andrew apologizing for not showing up.

So at first, I didn't believe him when he said the trip would be different. But in the days before the holiday, Andrew packed his suitcase, booked the flights, and planned the whole itinerary. I let myself trust him one more time.

Of course, he let me down again.

This time, though, I wasn't angry. I walked past all my coworkers and their barely contained grins, straight into HR's office, and handed over the resignation letter I'd printed out a month ago.

The HR manager, Diana Cole, blinked. "You're leaving?"

I nodded.

"I'll need to let Mr. Hartwell know."

She reached for her phone to send a message, and I stopped her. "Call him."

Chloe was witty and fun. She kept Andrew entertained, so when he was with her, he never bothered checking his messages. Whenever I texted him, I'd usually have to wait until the next day for a reply.

I was done waiting.

Diana didn't love the idea, but given my position, she dialed Andrew's number. "Mr. Hartwell, Ms. Lloyd wants to—"

He cut her off before she could finish, his voice cold. "Whatever she wants, just handle it. That's literally your job. Do I really need to explain how HR works to the HR department?"

Clearly, he was still mad at me over the comment situation.

Diana didn't dare say another word.

Andrew added, "And like I've said before, if it's not urgent, just text. Don't call."

Then he hung up without hesitation. But in that split second before the line went dead, I caught Chloe's voice in the background. "Andrew, you sound so upset. Was that Wendy calling?"

Diana's expression was sour after the scolding, but she kept her tone civil. "You heard what he said. Why don't you just take the resignation back? I'll pretend I never saw it, and I won't mention it to anyone."

She clearly didn't think I'd actually leave. She assumed this was what I always did when Andrew upset me, just another threat to get his attention.

And honestly, who could blame her? Andrew and I had been married for eight years. We'd built this company together after the wedding.

We'd even named the company after the two of us. Nobody believed I'd actually walk away.

I shook my head. "Then let's do it by the book."

She tried to talk me out of it a couple more times, but when she saw my mind was made up, she stamped the approval on my resignation and started the handover process.

Word spread through the company fast. People were surprised, sure, but the consensus was that I'd tried to bluff Andrew with a resignation and accidentally called my own bluff.

I didn't bother explaining. I packed my things and walked out.

I'd barely made it to the front entrance when Diana came running after me, phone in hand.

"Wait! Mr. Hartwell's on the line. He says he needs to talk to you."

A murmur rippled through the lobby.

Someone laughed. "Well, I'll be damned. The whole playing-hard-to-get thing actually worked. He really fell for it."

"I mean, eight years of marriage. At that point, you'd be attached to a houseplant."

I paused for a moment, then took the phone.

It was on the speaker. Andrew's voice carried across the lobby, and the first thing out of his mouth was an accusation.

"Wendy, why aren't you picking up when I call? What if something important came up and you missed it? Are you going to answer for that?"

As if to make a point, Kieran squeezed my hand and flashed me a bright smile.Andrew was coming apart. "Is this some kind of joke?"He pointed at Kieran, practically unhinged. "Did you put ideas in her head? Is that why she went through with the divorce? You piece of shit. If you're so confident, why don't you compete with me fair and square?"Kieran laughed and held up our intertwined hands. "I don't think you're getting this. We're already together. Why would I need to compete with you?"Besides, I met Wendy once, and I've already won over the guy who had eight years with her. Even if we were competing, do you honestly think you'd stand a chance?"Andrew choked on whatever he was about to say. He just stood there, frozen. It looked like he was finally feeling what I'd lived with for years, the helplessness and pain of realizing that eight years together meant nothing. He opened his mouth to speak again, but his phone rang. It was his secretary. He picked up. Before the other

"I don't hate you."Before the hope could reach his eyes, I doused it. "But I don't love you either. To be honest, you're just a familiar stranger to me now."How miserable you are, how much you regret it, how much you love me, none of that has anything to do with me anymore."Andrew, stop contacting me."He shook his head, desperate. "I don't believe you could be this cold to me."He was clearly gearing up to wear me down. I didn't bother explaining further. "I have a boyfriend. So whether you believe me or not, stop. I don't want him getting the wrong idea."The words hit him like a bolt of lightning. He froze. His lips trembled, and he forced out a pale smile. "That's not possible. You're lying, right? We were together for eight years. I haven't moved on. How could you have?"I don't believe it. Wendy, I know you're just saying this to hurt me. You want to see me suffer.""Well, here. I'm suffering. I know I was wrong. I can't focus on anything anymore. I've put everything

Grant passed out again before he could hand the phone back. I didn't know whether to laugh or shake my head. I took it from his hand and put it away.Andrew and I had nothing to do with each other anymore. I should've deleted his number a long time ago, but the new job had kept me too busy. Now was as good a time as any.I figured he'd be too angry to call again, but I was wrong. By the time I'd dropped Grant off and gotten home to shower, Andrew had called from a different number. There were multiple missed calls and a string of messages waiting for me.He must have known he'd gone too far, because he didn't demand to know why I'd blocked him. His tone was the opposite."Wendy, I know I was wrong. I don't know what I was thinking, treating you the way I did. Can you please forgive me?"Come back. I really miss you. I love you."If you come back, I'll do whatever you say this time. I swear nothing like this will ever happen again."I found out about everything Chloe did. I know

"You dragged me all over the city looking for another place. I was exhausted. I told you I'd sleep on the couch, and I even promised you. And you still said no without a second thought."You told me that a gentleman doesn't put himself in compromising positions. That until we'd decided to get married, you'd make sure nothing crossed the line."So why are you putting yourself in that position now? Do you think the line doesn't apply to you anymore? Or did you already know it was never a line at all, because you'd already decided she was yours?"I said all of it calmly, steadily, and by the end, Andrew looked like he'd been drained of blood. There wasn't a trace of sympathy left in my eyes. "What else did you want to talk about? I'm all ears."Andrew had nothing. He clenched his jaw. "Wendy, if you're determined to see it that way, then there's nothing I can do."He turned and stormed off."Hold on," I said.A flicker of hope crossed his face. He was about to speak when I pointed

Besides, I'd burned myself plenty of times back when I was learning to cook for Andrew. I knew how to handle it.Kieran hesitated at the door to my room, then glanced around to make sure no one was listening. "I probably shouldn't get involved in your personal business, but there are some things I think you should know."I saw everything just now, the argument. And I handed you that decree on purpose."Your husband and that young woman, I've seen them around a lot these past few days. They're always together, coming and going. They've been sharing a room. And I overheard them talking about waiting until the company goes public before divorcing you."That explained everything. No wonder Andrew had reacted the way he did when he found out I'd already filed.I thanked Kieran, went back to my room, cleaned and dressed the burn, and started packing.I knew Andrew would come find me. I just didn't expect it to be so soon. I was getting ready for bed when someone knocked.I assumed it

Andrew's face went white. He looked toward the front desk attendant. "What?"The guy, Kieran Walsh, wasn't talking to him. He'd gotten to know me over the past couple of days, and when he saw me on the ground, he rushed over to help me up. He even asked if I needed to see a doctor.I shook my head and took the divorce decree from his hands. He looked a little sheepish. "You said to let you know the second it arrived, but I called and couldn't get through. My shift's about to end, and I didn't want you to miss it today, so I came out to find you."Your foot looks really bad, though. Let me take you to the clinic. It's close by."Kieran helped me to my feet. We'd barely taken two steps before Andrew blocked our path."What divorce decree?"Kieran let out a short laugh. "What else would a divorce decree be? It's a decree of divorce. There's only the one kind."I couldn't tell if I was imagining it, but there was an edge to his voice.Andrew didn't pick up on it. His eyes locked o
