Chapter 5

مؤلف: Cutie Kitty
On my second day, I stopped at the Skyridge Monastery.

Andrew was terrified of altitude sickness and always refused to go. I begged him for years, eventually working myself into the ground, closing 20 projects in a single year just to earn the trip.

He finally agreed. But right before we were supposed to leave, Chloe got sick. Andrew said she didn't have any friends here, that, as her boss, he needed to look after her.

So, the trip was canceled.

I kept heading north. On the last day of my vacation, I reached the final stop, the one Andrew and I had originally planned together, Lake Serenity.

Standing there, it hit me. The places I'd spent three years dreaming about, the ones that kept getting pushed back for one reason or another, only took seven days to see.

I changed my return flight to two days later and called the county clerk's office to have one copy of the divorce decree mailed to the guesthouse where I was staying.

The vacation was over. I was ready to start my new life and not look back. I wasn't planning on seeing Andrew one last time, either.

But life had other ideas. That evening, I walked out of the guesthouse to check out a local bonfire gathering, and there they were, Andrew and Chloe.

The two of them were sitting around the fire, eating barbecue. Andrew was all smiles, feeding Chloe a piece of meat fresh off the grill.

The same man who was so particular about cleanliness took the cup she'd been drinking from without a second thought and finished her mulled cider.

Even during our honeymoon, Andrew insisted on serving spoons at every meal. He never shared a cup with me. He said it was a hygiene thing, that sharing utensils killed his appetite.

But here he was, eating without a care in the world.

I knew I should've just turned around and left. But these bonfire gatherings only happened once a month, and I wasn't going to let them ruin my plans.

I started looking for a spot far away from them.

Andrew saw me first. He got up and walked over, already annoyed. "What are you doing here? I told you I'd bring you next time."

I didn't answer. My eyes went to the beaded bracelets on his and Chloe's wrists, the kind the local shops sold as souvenirs.

A long time ago, I'd told him that if we ever made it out here, I wanted to buy a matching pair and have our names carved into the beads.

Now I could see the one on his wrist. One of the beads had Chloe's initials on it. Chloe noticed me looking and gave her wrist a deliberate little twist, showing off the bead carved with Andrew's.

I almost laughed. None of this surprised me anymore.

Andrew must have caught where I was looking, because he tucked his hand behind his back and glanced away. "Chloe and I were on a work trip and happened to pass through. I remembered you always wanted to come here, so I figured I'd scout it out for you.

"Anyway, since you're here, sit down and eat something."

Then he turned to Chloe. "Change tomorrow's flight. Push it back two days."

A flicker of irritation crossed Chloe's face, but she covered it with a playful tone. "Wendy, your timing is something else. Showing up right on the last day of vacation.

"But Andrew, I really need to get back to work. Just change one ticket. You stay here and show Wendy around."

She pulled out her phone.

Andrew frowned slightly, and sure enough, he said exactly what she wanted him to say. "Forget it. Don't change anything. Work comes first."

As if to make a point, Kieran squeezed my hand and flashed me a bright smile.Andrew was coming apart. "Is this some kind of joke?"He pointed at Kieran, practically unhinged. "Did you put ideas in her head? Is that why she went through with the divorce? You piece of shit. If you're so confident, why don't you compete with me fair and square?"Kieran laughed and held up our intertwined hands. "I don't think you're getting this. We're already together. Why would I need to compete with you?"Besides, I met Wendy once, and I've already won over the guy who had eight years with her. Even if we were competing, do you honestly think you'd stand a chance?"Andrew choked on whatever he was about to say. He just stood there, frozen. It looked like he was finally feeling what I'd lived with for years, the helplessness and pain of realizing that eight years together meant nothing. He opened his mouth to speak again, but his phone rang. It was his secretary. He picked up. Before the other

"I don't hate you."Before the hope could reach his eyes, I doused it. "But I don't love you either. To be honest, you're just a familiar stranger to me now."How miserable you are, how much you regret it, how much you love me, none of that has anything to do with me anymore."Andrew, stop contacting me."He shook his head, desperate. "I don't believe you could be this cold to me."He was clearly gearing up to wear me down. I didn't bother explaining further. "I have a boyfriend. So whether you believe me or not, stop. I don't want him getting the wrong idea."The words hit him like a bolt of lightning. He froze. His lips trembled, and he forced out a pale smile. "That's not possible. You're lying, right? We were together for eight years. I haven't moved on. How could you have?"I don't believe it. Wendy, I know you're just saying this to hurt me. You want to see me suffer.""Well, here. I'm suffering. I know I was wrong. I can't focus on anything anymore. I've put everything

Grant passed out again before he could hand the phone back. I didn't know whether to laugh or shake my head. I took it from his hand and put it away.Andrew and I had nothing to do with each other anymore. I should've deleted his number a long time ago, but the new job had kept me too busy. Now was as good a time as any.I figured he'd be too angry to call again, but I was wrong. By the time I'd dropped Grant off and gotten home to shower, Andrew had called from a different number. There were multiple missed calls and a string of messages waiting for me.He must have known he'd gone too far, because he didn't demand to know why I'd blocked him. His tone was the opposite."Wendy, I know I was wrong. I don't know what I was thinking, treating you the way I did. Can you please forgive me?"Come back. I really miss you. I love you."If you come back, I'll do whatever you say this time. I swear nothing like this will ever happen again."I found out about everything Chloe did. I know

"You dragged me all over the city looking for another place. I was exhausted. I told you I'd sleep on the couch, and I even promised you. And you still said no without a second thought."You told me that a gentleman doesn't put himself in compromising positions. That until we'd decided to get married, you'd make sure nothing crossed the line."So why are you putting yourself in that position now? Do you think the line doesn't apply to you anymore? Or did you already know it was never a line at all, because you'd already decided she was yours?"I said all of it calmly, steadily, and by the end, Andrew looked like he'd been drained of blood. There wasn't a trace of sympathy left in my eyes. "What else did you want to talk about? I'm all ears."Andrew had nothing. He clenched his jaw. "Wendy, if you're determined to see it that way, then there's nothing I can do."He turned and stormed off."Hold on," I said.A flicker of hope crossed his face. He was about to speak when I pointed

Besides, I'd burned myself plenty of times back when I was learning to cook for Andrew. I knew how to handle it.Kieran hesitated at the door to my room, then glanced around to make sure no one was listening. "I probably shouldn't get involved in your personal business, but there are some things I think you should know."I saw everything just now, the argument. And I handed you that decree on purpose."Your husband and that young woman, I've seen them around a lot these past few days. They're always together, coming and going. They've been sharing a room. And I overheard them talking about waiting until the company goes public before divorcing you."That explained everything. No wonder Andrew had reacted the way he did when he found out I'd already filed.I thanked Kieran, went back to my room, cleaned and dressed the burn, and started packing.I knew Andrew would come find me. I just didn't expect it to be so soon. I was getting ready for bed when someone knocked.I assumed it

Andrew's face went white. He looked toward the front desk attendant. "What?"The guy, Kieran Walsh, wasn't talking to him. He'd gotten to know me over the past couple of days, and when he saw me on the ground, he rushed over to help me up. He even asked if I needed to see a doctor.I shook my head and took the divorce decree from his hands. He looked a little sheepish. "You said to let you know the second it arrived, but I called and couldn't get through. My shift's about to end, and I didn't want you to miss it today, so I came out to find you."Your foot looks really bad, though. Let me take you to the clinic. It's close by."Kieran helped me to my feet. We'd barely taken two steps before Andrew blocked our path."What divorce decree?"Kieran let out a short laugh. "What else would a divorce decree be? It's a decree of divorce. There's only the one kind."I couldn't tell if I was imagining it, but there was an edge to his voice.Andrew didn't pick up on it. His eyes locked o
