Chapter 3

مؤلف: Cutie Kitty
"Go to Chloe's desk right now. There's a file that needs to be delivered to a client. Take care of it, and hurry. They're waiting."

The lobby went quiet for a beat, then filled with muffled laughter. I stood there holding the phone, and even though I already knew Andrew had stopped taking me seriously a long time ago, it still stung.

Not long before this, he'd promoted Chloe to the same level as me so she could boss me around more easily. He framed it as "helping each other out," but in practice, every tedious task on Chloe's plate got dumped onto mine.

By now, the news of my resignation should've already reached him. And he was still sending me on errands for her.

I scoffed. For once, I didn't swallow my pride to keep the peace. "Chloe's work is Chloe's responsibility. Why would that fall on me?"

He wasn't expecting that. There was a pause on the other end.

Before he could recover, I kept going. "And I don't have the time. Her files, her delivery."

I hung up, handed the phone back to Diana, and walked straight out of the building while everyone stared. A few steps past the front entrance, I stopped and looked back at the office building I'd spent eight years in.

Through the glass windows of Andrew's office, I could see the orchid I'd given him years ago sitting on the windowsill, wilted and brown. Right next to it, the succulent Chloe had given him was thriving.

I smiled to myself, took out my phone, and made a call.

"That project you mentioned before. I've made my decision.

"I'm in."

Andrew and I met through a blind date. We hit it off right away, and within two months, we were married.

Shortly after the wedding, he told me about his dream of starting a company. I believed in him completely. I quit my six-figure job, brought my expertise and every dollar I'd saved, and helped him build it from scratch.

To keep the pressure off him, I kept my own salary low. Even now, with the company on the verge of going public, I'd only ever gotten one raise, and it was barely a thousand dollars.

Other companies had come knocking over the years, offering five times what Andrew paid me. I turned them all down.

It wasn't just because the company felt like something I'd raised from nothing. Years ago, when I got sick and needed surgery, Andrew went to everyone he knew, begging for money to cover the cost.

He practically got on his knees in front of the surgeon. That meant something to me. I truly believed what he always said, that we were partners, that we were in this together, that there was no yours and mine.

Then Chloe showed up, and everything changed.

He humiliated me in front of colleagues to take her side. He'd never once cared about splitting a dinner check, but suddenly he wanted to go halves with me on everything.

A little while back, my car broke down. I'd been driving it for ten years. At the shop, I didn't have enough cash on me, so I transferred a thousand dollars out of our joint account to cover the repair.

Andrew was furious. He went on and on about me spending recklessly, and then changed the account password without even telling me.

"Wendy, I know some of that money is yours, but we've got a long road ahead. There'll be plenty of expenses coming. You can't just keep dipping into savings whenever you feel like it.

"What happened to you? You used to have so much drive. I miss that version of you."

He loved talking about how he had no respect for women who depended on men. But then I found out he'd bought Chloe a fully loaded new car for her birthday. When I confronted him, he had the nerve to call it a "performance bonus."

As if to make a point, Kieran squeezed my hand and flashed me a bright smile.Andrew was coming apart. "Is this some kind of joke?"He pointed at Kieran, practically unhinged. "Did you put ideas in her head? Is that why she went through with the divorce? You piece of shit. If you're so confident, why don't you compete with me fair and square?"Kieran laughed and held up our intertwined hands. "I don't think you're getting this. We're already together. Why would I need to compete with you?"Besides, I met Wendy once, and I've already won over the guy who had eight years with her. Even if we were competing, do you honestly think you'd stand a chance?"Andrew choked on whatever he was about to say. He just stood there, frozen. It looked like he was finally feeling what I'd lived with for years, the helplessness and pain of realizing that eight years together meant nothing. He opened his mouth to speak again, but his phone rang. It was his secretary. He picked up. Before the other

"I don't hate you."Before the hope could reach his eyes, I doused it. "But I don't love you either. To be honest, you're just a familiar stranger to me now."How miserable you are, how much you regret it, how much you love me, none of that has anything to do with me anymore."Andrew, stop contacting me."He shook his head, desperate. "I don't believe you could be this cold to me."He was clearly gearing up to wear me down. I didn't bother explaining further. "I have a boyfriend. So whether you believe me or not, stop. I don't want him getting the wrong idea."The words hit him like a bolt of lightning. He froze. His lips trembled, and he forced out a pale smile. "That's not possible. You're lying, right? We were together for eight years. I haven't moved on. How could you have?"I don't believe it. Wendy, I know you're just saying this to hurt me. You want to see me suffer.""Well, here. I'm suffering. I know I was wrong. I can't focus on anything anymore. I've put everything

Grant passed out again before he could hand the phone back. I didn't know whether to laugh or shake my head. I took it from his hand and put it away.Andrew and I had nothing to do with each other anymore. I should've deleted his number a long time ago, but the new job had kept me too busy. Now was as good a time as any.I figured he'd be too angry to call again, but I was wrong. By the time I'd dropped Grant off and gotten home to shower, Andrew had called from a different number. There were multiple missed calls and a string of messages waiting for me.He must have known he'd gone too far, because he didn't demand to know why I'd blocked him. His tone was the opposite."Wendy, I know I was wrong. I don't know what I was thinking, treating you the way I did. Can you please forgive me?"Come back. I really miss you. I love you."If you come back, I'll do whatever you say this time. I swear nothing like this will ever happen again."I found out about everything Chloe did. I know

"You dragged me all over the city looking for another place. I was exhausted. I told you I'd sleep on the couch, and I even promised you. And you still said no without a second thought."You told me that a gentleman doesn't put himself in compromising positions. That until we'd decided to get married, you'd make sure nothing crossed the line."So why are you putting yourself in that position now? Do you think the line doesn't apply to you anymore? Or did you already know it was never a line at all, because you'd already decided she was yours?"I said all of it calmly, steadily, and by the end, Andrew looked like he'd been drained of blood. There wasn't a trace of sympathy left in my eyes. "What else did you want to talk about? I'm all ears."Andrew had nothing. He clenched his jaw. "Wendy, if you're determined to see it that way, then there's nothing I can do."He turned and stormed off."Hold on," I said.A flicker of hope crossed his face. He was about to speak when I pointed

Besides, I'd burned myself plenty of times back when I was learning to cook for Andrew. I knew how to handle it.Kieran hesitated at the door to my room, then glanced around to make sure no one was listening. "I probably shouldn't get involved in your personal business, but there are some things I think you should know."I saw everything just now, the argument. And I handed you that decree on purpose."Your husband and that young woman, I've seen them around a lot these past few days. They're always together, coming and going. They've been sharing a room. And I overheard them talking about waiting until the company goes public before divorcing you."That explained everything. No wonder Andrew had reacted the way he did when he found out I'd already filed.I thanked Kieran, went back to my room, cleaned and dressed the burn, and started packing.I knew Andrew would come find me. I just didn't expect it to be so soon. I was getting ready for bed when someone knocked.I assumed it

Andrew's face went white. He looked toward the front desk attendant. "What?"The guy, Kieran Walsh, wasn't talking to him. He'd gotten to know me over the past couple of days, and when he saw me on the ground, he rushed over to help me up. He even asked if I needed to see a doctor.I shook my head and took the divorce decree from his hands. He looked a little sheepish. "You said to let you know the second it arrived, but I called and couldn't get through. My shift's about to end, and I didn't want you to miss it today, so I came out to find you."Your foot looks really bad, though. Let me take you to the clinic. It's close by."Kieran helped me to my feet. We'd barely taken two steps before Andrew blocked our path."What divorce decree?"Kieran let out a short laugh. "What else would a divorce decree be? It's a decree of divorce. There's only the one kind."I couldn't tell if I was imagining it, but there was an edge to his voice.Andrew didn't pick up on it. His eyes locked o
