Chapter 4

مؤلف: Cutie Kitty
But when I pulled three consecutive all-nighters chasing a difficult high-value client and brought in tens of millions in profit for the company, all Andrew gave me was a pat on the back.

What kind of "performance bonus" costs half a million dollars?

I was finally done with Andrew. I'd wanted to end things amicably, use the trip to tell him face to face that I was leaving, and give our eight-year marriage a proper ending.

Instead...

I laughed at myself.

On the other end of the phone, the man was thrilled to hear I'd accepted. He sent the contract over immediately and even wanted me to fly out that day so I could start the next morning.

They weren't shy about their enthusiasm. "Our CEO has tried to recruit you over a dozen times. He's very serious about bringing you on board."

I thanked him but pushed the start date to after my vacation.

I loved traveling, loved mountains and open water. Andrew used to love going with me. But after Chloe came along, we never went anywhere again. Every plan fell through.

Andrew broke his promise. But I wasn't going to break mine to myself. The trip would go on, with or without him.

Right after I hung up, a message came in from Chloe.

"Sorry to bother you, Wendy. I know you and Andrew are about to finalize the divorce, so I probably shouldn't be getting in the middle of things. But he's the one who suggested this trip, and I didn't want to let him down.

"Oh, by the way, your divorce papers should be ready soon, right? Andrew's birthday is coming up. You could give him the decree as a gift. I'm sure he'd love that, since he never really loved you anyway."

Then she sent a photo. Andrew and her on a beach, posing in wedding outfits. He was lifting her into the air, smiling wider than the sun behind them.

I knew what Chloe was doing. She was trying to get a rise out of me.

She knew about the divorce. In fact, she was the one who'd handed Andrew the papers to sign.

She'd found the agreement on my desk and came to me with that smug look on her face. "Wendy, you're really going through with the divorce? Want me to take these to Andrew for you? I'd hate for you to have to watch him sign them and start crying right there."

She'd meant it as a taunt, hoping I'd snap.

I just nodded. "Sure. Go ahead."

Andrew didn't trust me. He'd scrutinize every document I put in front of him like he was looking for a trap.

But Chloe was different. He trusted her completely. When she handed him the papers, he signed without even reading them.

The divorce went smoother than our marriage ever did.

I didn't know whether Andrew had ever loved me. But Chloe had been needling me for months, marking her territory right in front of my face, and I was sure he knew exactly what was going on.

If that was how things were, then this marriage had no reason to exist anymore.

I didn't reply to her message. I called the county clerk's office instead and found out the decree would be ready in a week. That was right when my vacation ended.

I went home and tore down the photo wall. I threw out everything that had anything to do with us. Then I grabbed my suitcase, booked a flight, and left on my own.

On my first day, I went to Clearwater Bay.

This was the trip Andrew and I had planned three years ago, back when Chloe had just started and the company was booming. Andrew said we couldn't afford to take our foot off the gas, so we shelved it. We never brought it up again.

As if to make a point, Kieran squeezed my hand and flashed me a bright smile.Andrew was coming apart. "Is this some kind of joke?"He pointed at Kieran, practically unhinged. "Did you put ideas in her head? Is that why she went through with the divorce? You piece of shit. If you're so confident, why don't you compete with me fair and square?"Kieran laughed and held up our intertwined hands. "I don't think you're getting this. We're already together. Why would I need to compete with you?"Besides, I met Wendy once, and I've already won over the guy who had eight years with her. Even if we were competing, do you honestly think you'd stand a chance?"Andrew choked on whatever he was about to say. He just stood there, frozen. It looked like he was finally feeling what I'd lived with for years, the helplessness and pain of realizing that eight years together meant nothing. He opened his mouth to speak again, but his phone rang. It was his secretary. He picked up. Before the other

"I don't hate you."Before the hope could reach his eyes, I doused it. "But I don't love you either. To be honest, you're just a familiar stranger to me now."How miserable you are, how much you regret it, how much you love me, none of that has anything to do with me anymore."Andrew, stop contacting me."He shook his head, desperate. "I don't believe you could be this cold to me."He was clearly gearing up to wear me down. I didn't bother explaining further. "I have a boyfriend. So whether you believe me or not, stop. I don't want him getting the wrong idea."The words hit him like a bolt of lightning. He froze. His lips trembled, and he forced out a pale smile. "That's not possible. You're lying, right? We were together for eight years. I haven't moved on. How could you have?"I don't believe it. Wendy, I know you're just saying this to hurt me. You want to see me suffer.""Well, here. I'm suffering. I know I was wrong. I can't focus on anything anymore. I've put everything

Grant passed out again before he could hand the phone back. I didn't know whether to laugh or shake my head. I took it from his hand and put it away.Andrew and I had nothing to do with each other anymore. I should've deleted his number a long time ago, but the new job had kept me too busy. Now was as good a time as any.I figured he'd be too angry to call again, but I was wrong. By the time I'd dropped Grant off and gotten home to shower, Andrew had called from a different number. There were multiple missed calls and a string of messages waiting for me.He must have known he'd gone too far, because he didn't demand to know why I'd blocked him. His tone was the opposite."Wendy, I know I was wrong. I don't know what I was thinking, treating you the way I did. Can you please forgive me?"Come back. I really miss you. I love you."If you come back, I'll do whatever you say this time. I swear nothing like this will ever happen again."I found out about everything Chloe did. I know

"You dragged me all over the city looking for another place. I was exhausted. I told you I'd sleep on the couch, and I even promised you. And you still said no without a second thought."You told me that a gentleman doesn't put himself in compromising positions. That until we'd decided to get married, you'd make sure nothing crossed the line."So why are you putting yourself in that position now? Do you think the line doesn't apply to you anymore? Or did you already know it was never a line at all, because you'd already decided she was yours?"I said all of it calmly, steadily, and by the end, Andrew looked like he'd been drained of blood. There wasn't a trace of sympathy left in my eyes. "What else did you want to talk about? I'm all ears."Andrew had nothing. He clenched his jaw. "Wendy, if you're determined to see it that way, then there's nothing I can do."He turned and stormed off."Hold on," I said.A flicker of hope crossed his face. He was about to speak when I pointed

Besides, I'd burned myself plenty of times back when I was learning to cook for Andrew. I knew how to handle it.Kieran hesitated at the door to my room, then glanced around to make sure no one was listening. "I probably shouldn't get involved in your personal business, but there are some things I think you should know."I saw everything just now, the argument. And I handed you that decree on purpose."Your husband and that young woman, I've seen them around a lot these past few days. They're always together, coming and going. They've been sharing a room. And I overheard them talking about waiting until the company goes public before divorcing you."That explained everything. No wonder Andrew had reacted the way he did when he found out I'd already filed.I thanked Kieran, went back to my room, cleaned and dressed the burn, and started packing.I knew Andrew would come find me. I just didn't expect it to be so soon. I was getting ready for bed when someone knocked.I assumed it

Andrew's face went white. He looked toward the front desk attendant. "What?"The guy, Kieran Walsh, wasn't talking to him. He'd gotten to know me over the past couple of days, and when he saw me on the ground, he rushed over to help me up. He even asked if I needed to see a doctor.I shook my head and took the divorce decree from his hands. He looked a little sheepish. "You said to let you know the second it arrived, but I called and couldn't get through. My shift's about to end, and I didn't want you to miss it today, so I came out to find you."Your foot looks really bad, though. Let me take you to the clinic. It's close by."Kieran helped me to my feet. We'd barely taken two steps before Andrew blocked our path."What divorce decree?"Kieran let out a short laugh. "What else would a divorce decree be? It's a decree of divorce. There's only the one kind."I couldn't tell if I was imagining it, but there was an edge to his voice.Andrew didn't pick up on it. His eyes locked o
