The air was light, almost like a song, because Mallory had finally been proven innocent of the crime that Jane had falsely accused her of committing.

I watched Mallory as her eyes sparkled with joy. My brother, Clark, held her in a tight embrace, and their happiness was like a spotlight, blinding me to everything else. I felt like a statue, frozen in place, unable to tear my gaze away from them.

“Oh, Clark! I couldn’t thank you enough. I owed my freedom to you. Thank you, thank you!” Mallory kept on saying. As the crowd slowly dispersed, so does the light of my heart. I tried my best to neglect the stinging pain piercing through my chest seeing her in the arms of another man but I just couldn’t. Maybe, this is the power of the mate bond. I just wish Mallory was not exempt from it so she could feel my devotion to her and how much that simple action could affect me.
