"It's going to rain today." Ella looked up at the dark angry clouds that began to form in the sky. "I think you should take a day off, Aurora."

Aurora wrapped the cloak over her mother's shoulder and shrugged knowing her mother's suggestion was not effective. Her employer was stingy and selfish and he would happily deduct a huge sum of money from her small wage and as a punishment the man would force her to work overtime.

Ella pinched the bridge of her nose and said. "You work too hard darling. I'm sure your employer won't mind if you do take the day off."

"It's clear you don't know what my employer is like, mother." Aurora clenched her fist as images of what her boss tried to do the previous day flashed in front of her vision.

"He's an old friend of mine, Aurora. I'm sure he wouldn't mind you skipping a day." She crossed her arms and peered at her daughter intensely. "Is something the matter with you?"

She swallowed a lump that formed at the back of her throat before planting a genuine smile across her lips. Even though it didn't quite reach her eyes, it was quite enough to have her mother convinced. "No of course not."

"I'm still against you leaving this house in this bad weather condition." She pulled the cloak further up her shoulders. "Why can't you just settle down with that lad that sent those flowers. He seems prestigious and wealthy. He could take care of you as well as this family."

Aurora covered her ears as a way of protecting them from her mother's words that were like venom. She wondered if the woman was hearing herself. She was tired of trying to explain her reason for not wanting to be with a man. She was still young and tender and she wasn't ready to take on responsibilities as a housewife. She wanted to be a free woman, who could make her own decisions. Not a woman who was bound by rules.

It seemed Ella was even more gullible for money than her daughter's wellbeing.  The entire village had the same problem, parents wanted to marry off their daughters to the most eligible bachelor. Women were not allowed to choose the person they spent the rest of their lives with. Most of the village men were considered abusive but the females were not in any position to speak out against their spouses. The women who got divorced were considered rejected. No man would be willing to marry these females since they are considered useless.

Parents never cared about their children's feelings or interests. The parents only focused on things that could build their status and wealth.

Apart from Aurora wished her mother was made from a completely different material from the rest of the native villagers. Arranged marriage was embedded as a part of the tradition of the village for decades as a way for parents to control who their child will marry in the mere future. Aurora saw the traditions as irrelevant and stupid but no one else agreed to this.

She held onto her mother's frail hand lightly and led her back inside the house when the clouds burst and conceived a baby.

"I will take my chances."  She said knowing her mother wasn't worried about the weather condition but instead the full moon.

"Oh, Aurora!" A weak smile formed on her dry lips and her eyes welled with tears. "What will I do if anything happens to you?"

Aurora's heart swelled as she embraced Ella in a warm hug. She loved her mother dearly despite her desires towards her. Aurora knew Ella was only doing what was best for their survival.

Ella wouldn't be around for the rest of their lives and it was up to the girls to care for themselves. The thought of losing Ella gave her heartache but she knew the illness would take her home. She shrugged away the thought and decided to get ready for work.

She clutched her stomach that growled like an angry lion. Pain exploded throughout her stomach. She went an entire day without a meal and she knew if she went another minute her mother would find her corpse slumped on the wooded floor.

"How much more will you endure?" Violets concerned voice asked.

Aurora looked up at her sister with furrowed eyebrows. "What do you mean by that?"

Violet searched Aurora's once vibrant eyes that were distant and stretched her arms out. "You are my sister so I have to be honest with you, Aurora. You are so absorbed in doing what you think is best for our mother that you hardly have time for yourself."

"I have time for myself, Violet. Our tax is due in a week and we don't have half of the money to pay. If we can't pay you to know what will happen to mother." She crossed her arms over her chest.

"You poor thing." She laughed bitterly. "Mother is the real reason we are in this mess, to begin with. I don't know what she got involved with but I know it's not good?"

"What are you saying?" Aurora didn't understand what her sister was trying to tell her but she had a feeling it wasn't anything good. Their mother was a loving woman who pushed her children to do things that were necessary for their survival. She

couldn't think of her getting involved in anything that would put her family at risk.

"She is the real reason no man will ever glance in my direction."

Aurora shook her head. "That's not true Violet." Their neighbor's grandson took a liking to Violet. She was so preoccupied with looking pretty that she failed to notice the signs.

"I know you are just trying to make me feel better but it's all in vain."

"I'm not trying to make you feel better. I'm just telling you that there are many young men out there that are interested in you." Violet was a delicate soul in the eyes of men who never truly knew her. She was loved by anyone who sets eyes upon her beauty.

"No one ever took interest in me, Aurora." Her voice became weary as she spoke. "No one has ever bought me flowers and sent me love notes."

Aurora sat on her bed and soothed her grieving sister. "Maybe you never took notice. Any man would die to ask for your hand in marriage. Just be patient sister it's just not your time as yet."

"My lady I beg you to reconsider." Fredrigo pleaded. "This part of the village is not safe. There aren't a lot of masculine in these parts. I can offer your family the protection you need."She cringed inwardly at the thought of her staying in Fredrigo's house. She was too wise to fall into his trap. She knew it was harsh to falsely accuse him of forcing that animal to attack her. The idea even sounded vague to her all of a sudden. A sensation she knew too well as guilt over came her. Staring at him she noticed how troubled he looked. Could it really mean that he was concerned about her family? Or was he using their vulnerability as an advantage to steal his way into her heart?Knowing men all too well she decided to stick with option two. Men would do anything in there power to get a woman's attention. She learned that through her readings. Her thoughts drifted back to when she was harassed by her former employer. She couldn't afford to face that faith again. It was too much for a

She heard talking but it sounded so muffled. She couldn't make out what the voice was saying. A grown left her lips when she tried to move her hands. Pain coursed through her body and her head felt like it was being hammered. She tried to open her eyes but her vision was blurry. Was I dead? She thought to herself. There was no other way to explain the agonizing pain she was feeling. She was expecting to feel the coldness of the ground and complete darkness but what she felt was warmth and comfort. She could also see fractions of light from under her heavy eyelids. Another groan left her lips and she grabbed her pounding head and forced herself to sit up. "She awake!" She heard the surprised voice of her sister before she was embraced with a hug. "Thank goodness." Ella sighed and rushed to aid her sick daughter. " Relax honey, you bumped your head pretty badly." Her eyes fluttered open and she was greeted by her mother's dull, lifeless eyes. A worried expression clouded her face.

Aurora sat beside Violet on the bed. She caressed ber shoulder and gave her a side hug."I don't think mom approves of anything, Violet. " She said.Apart of her was hoping her sister was in love with Felix. Felix was the only man that knew Violet's worth. Other men would only go after her, because of her good looks. Men only cared about women that looked appealing in their arms. Most men were egocentric thus Violet would be treated like a puppet on a string. She wouldn't be granted her freedom. Aurora wanted what was best for her older sister. And she knew Felix was that good she needed. Females in the village relied heavily on traditions and Aurora knew it was what held them back. Females believed men should rule their lives while Aurora on the other hand thought otherwise. She knew her mother had to be paid a good sum of money since she insisted on marrying off the youngest child first. Normally it was the oldest that went first. No one wanted to leave their oldest child unwed, th

"Have you tested the waters before you start complaining?" Aurora furrowed her eyebrows and asked Felix. He lifted his shoulder and dropped it. Uncertainty was as clear as day on his face. "Violet wants a better life than the one she's living and I cannot give that to her." He said with a sigh. Aurora knew what Felix said was true. Her sister wanted a man that could give her pretty expensive stuff. Felix's small wage couldn't do much but Aurora thought that maybe Violet would open her eyes and notice that there was someone who still notice her. Aurora didn't know where her sister got that silly idea of hers. If men were running away from her, why was Felix still there? Why won't she notice him? "You do have a point but you are doing more harm than good when you conceal your feelings." Aurora said. She was never in love but she knew a thing or two from the books she read to know that love was a dangerous feeling. It is good in many ways but in some circumstances, it can be a danger

She never shut her eyes that night. She peeked down at her sister who was sound asleep and she couldn't help but feel jealous. She missed being able to close her eyes and drift into another world even if it lingered for a minute. As long as the night was she thought about what the man said. It was then realization struct her, whoever was paying that much money for her intentions weren't clean. But she couldn't back down on the offer, her home needed repair, the house needed food and her mother needed medication. Even if she wanted to decline the offer she knew it was impossible. The man had threatened her saying a decision would be made for her. What decision? Were they going to force her against her will to do something she didn't want to?She could still feel the weight of the money in her hand. But she didn't know why anyone would pay that much for a young girl. Were they that wealthy? Where did that much money come from? All the thinking left her with a headache and no an

Aurora ran as fast as her feet could take her, away from her employer's shop. She knew working for him came with risks, but for her family, she would risk anything except her vertue. Her employer's touch felt like insects crawling on her skin it felt disgusting. She couldn't get it out of her mind. Even though she was saved once again by someone her mother wanted her to marry, she couldn't stop thinking about how far her employer was going to take things with her. This time she knew for sure there was no going back to that place. It was stupid of her to work for him after he assaulted her multiple times. She looked down on her bruised wrists and tears began to flow like a river as she fell to her knees in the middle of the woods. She felt as if the world was on her shoulders and everyone was expecting only one thing from her. Something she wasn't ready for. What did she do to be in such a situation? The clouds burst and rain began to pour from the heav
