LOGINREMI’S P.O.V.
Unable to risk them choosing the easy, half-conscious woman in the tower across the way, I tucked Thesta’s shirt into my waistband and did something that I knew instantly I would regret.
“Here, Wolfie-Wolfie!” I called out with a shaky voice full of regret. As soon as the words left my mouth, I knew that I didn’t need to worry about them going after Thesta, because the snarls and noises of offense rang loud and clear through the town.
Bending forward slightly, my hands trembled as I lifted them before smacking them down onto my thighs a few times.
‘Now you’ve done it, Remi.’ I thought as all but one of the lycans braced themselves, leaning forward slightly as they shifted their weight, preparing to charge at me with their white fangs glinting in the moonlight.
The only one who didn’t react was the largest in the center. He was easily half a foot taller than the others and wider, too.
He looked stunned for another moment before I lifted my hands to pat my thighs again.
Only then, with my hands up in front of me, did he react.
His lips curled back, exposing his deadly canines as he released a vicious snarl in warning for me not to do it again.
Our eyes locked, and I could see the fury and bloodlust in them.
I should have listened to him. I should have stopped while I was ahead.
Instead, I pursed my dry, cracked lips and tried to blow air through them, “Pppphhhuuuu.”
The shaky breath that had meant to be a whistle was almost as humiliating as I was terrified, but like an idiot, I licked my lips and tried again.
“Ppp…pphhhhh…hhuuuuuu,” I attempted to whistle again, and the giant beast tilted his head to the side as if he were trying to figure out what I was doing. “Screw it! Here ,Wolfie! Come on! Good boy!”
The second my palms smacked against the tops of my thighs, a dozen lycans charged at me.
Had I not gone only a few minutes ago, before the bells, I would have peed myself.
Instead, I turned with a yelp of fear and sprinted further into the woods.
‘It would be really nice if I had a wolf right about now.’
The bitter thought lasted only a second, but even I could put my pride aside long enough to know that a wolf stood no chance for a lycan.
Each time I tried to lose them, there were more in my path, as if they were corralling me to go where they wanted.
The closer they got, the more panicked I became.
I should have stayed in the pack house. I should have stayed in the pack house. I should have…
My mind fell silent as the monsters that had been closing in suddenly melted away into the darkness, and I shook my head.
No! They couldn’t be going back! This couldn’t all be for nothing!
A glance over my shoulder confirmed that the forest was empty, and I listened closely for a moment for anything that would confirm I wasn’t alone.
“You came to hunt! Here I am!” I shouted as I came to a stop and turned around to face the way I had just come from.
Glancing around, I quickly spotted a semi-sturdy-looking branch on the ground.
I grabbed it, snapping it in half before holding both pieces in front of me, prepared to fight for my life.
Yet, I was met with silence.
I knew I wasn’t truly alone, though.
The pull I had been fighting for years was still there, humming in the background as if it were finally happy that I had listened to it.
Taking a step back, I felt a sudden whoosh of air, and I turned just in time to see the largest of the beasts going back into hiding.
Gripping the wooden stakes harder, I spun again as I heard another movement behind me.
“Come out here and fight me like a man! Leave my pack alone, you mangy freak of…" My scream was cut off as I was suddenly slammed to the ground.
The back of my head collided with a tree root, making my arms go weak as my vision blurred.
Even then, I was very aware of the sharp fangs pressed against my neck and the hot, wet breath hitting it as the monster stood over me, prepared to rip out my throat if I moved.
His heavy body pressed down on mine, threatening to crush me from his size alone. The thick, coarse fur brushed against my stomach where my shirt had ridden up, and the bright yellow of nightmare-inducing eyes had the smallest ring of blood-red around the iris.
I wanted to thrust the makeshift stakes into his gut, but my arms refused to move.
I whimpered as his jaw began to close, his teeth barely piercing the sensitive flesh of my skin before his entire body went rigid as sparks shot through me.
My breath caught.
I knew those sparks.
I had heard about them my entire life.
No.
No. No. No. No!
My horrified gaze lifted to the beast above me who was only a second away from killing me.
He couldn't be...
REMI’S P.O.V.My eyes flickered to the window, and as I felt him coming closer, I did what I always do.I didn’t give it a second thought.Rushing over to the window, I wrenched it open, momentarily stunned as I looked out over the vast city spread out between the mountains and in the valley just below it.What I had seen before in the city center was beautiful, but seeing it from here was breathtaking. But I didn’t have time to think about that now, or how I was going to slip past all of them and find my way out.I just needed to go.I would deal with the mate bond later. It wasn’t like I could just reject it, no matter how many women he had brought here before me.Lifting my leg over the ledge of the window, I finally looked down and felt my entire body turn to ice.We were at least four stories up, but I hadn’t remembered walking up that many stairs. I might have stood a chance if my wolf was here…MIGHT. But without her stubborn ass, I was as good as dead.I bet the witches in my t
REMI'S P.O.V.The further we walked into their city, the more appeared, and it only took one to throw their head back and howl before all of the other lycans did the same. The horror of seeing that they were celebrating one of the worst and scariest nights of a shifter's life was bone-chilling.The body beneath me trembled again, and the distinct sound of bones breaking made me look up again to find the other beasts slowly transforming back to their skin.My jaw dropped as I looked them over. They were tall, and more muscular than any standard shifter I had ever seen, but just as scary as they had been in their lycan form.Yet, my beast didn't shift, and the brief wave of disappointment that hit me shocked me back to reality. No! Not MY beast. He was my mate, but he was also one of the monsters who killed my pack members. He was the monster who had just dragged me through the forest like I was a deer he had caught. The faster my head healed, the clearer my mind became, and I tensed as
REMI’S P.O.V.For a moment, I couldn’t move or breathe. He slowly pulled back, almost reluctantly, yet his eyes were alight with anger and hatred. My heart dropped as I realized very quickly that, despite knowing I was his mate, he still looked ready to kill me.My eyes squeezed shut tightly, and I cringed away from him when he leaned down and released a deafening roar. His hot breath hit my face, yet my entire body went cold with fear.I was foolish to forget that he was a monster, even for only a second.Even after he stopped, I couldn’t move. The low, threatening rumble that was still coming from deep in his chest made a small whimper escape me.That seemed to break the spell, and as he fell silent. I slowly cracked one eye open to see him glaring down at me.My chest deflated as I let out a long, slow breath as the giant beast began to pull back, putting some space between us.Then his giant claw wrapped around my ankle, and my eyes shot wide open as he turned and walked away, dra

REMI’S P.O.V.I could feel them coming closer, rapidly closing in on our town.My heart hammered against my ribs as the pull grew stronger. It took everything in me not to go down and meet them at the treeline like I did in my dreams, but I wasn’t ready to die.And I knew Thesta wasn’t either.“Thesta!” I hissed down at her, terrified the beasts would hear me before she did.Yet, her body remained limp, the blood soaking her shirt as it dripped from the wound on the side of her head.“Thesta! Wake up!” I said a little louder, tears filling my eyes as I glanced around for help, but everyone had barricaded themselves away. Their doors and windows were covered and bolted shut to hide from the very beasts I had been running toward. There was no one to help."Damn it!” I spat before ducking under the bell and sprinting back down the stairs. The world felt darker as I stepped out, and every muscle in my body tensed as I rounded the corner into the open town square.“Thesta, you have to wake
REMI’S P.O.V.“I’ve changed my mind. It’s not worth it, Remi! Please, let’s go back!” My best friend Thesta begged, grabbing my arm as the bell chimed three times high above our heads in warning. My body jolted as I flinched from the sound, but Thesta ducked, covering her sensitive ears. The ringing of the bell was loud enough that no shifter wanted to come this close to it, making it the perfect place for me to hide.Three chimes.Three minutes left until the full Blood Moon would rise like a spotlight to watch the massacre. Then the wild beasts of the North would start their hunt… and we were their prey.We were taught from childhood that the Blood Moon was the one night a year that no one could be outside. The Blood Moon did something to the Lycans on the mountain. Their beasts would come forward and their bloodlust would be uncontrollable. By sunrise, they disappeared again, leaving only carnage behind. No one knew why, and no one had been able to stop them.“Join me or don’t, but
