~ Roselle ~
The creaking sound of the iron cell door makes my senses snap awake. My nose twitches as I try to catch any possible scent of food, my stomach already grumbling in protest. It's been three long days since I've had a proper meal, nothing but water and scraps barely enough to keep me going. My body feels weak, numb, even. The cell door finally opens, and I scramble toward it, even though every inch of me aches. It takes everything I have just to move. I'm more than surprised. This is unusual. Normally, they don't bother opening the door, they just slide the food in through the slot. So… what's going on? Are they finally going to kill me? My pulse picks up at the thought. It's still dark inside, and I can barely see anything… as a matter of fact, I haven't seen the sun in almost a year. "Well, look at you, dummy…" that familiar voice drawls from the darkness, dripping with mockery. I drag myself backward, already bracing for what comes next—a slap, or fingers tangling painfully in my hair. The light suddenly flicks on, blinding me instantly. I squeeze my eyes shut, my vision struggling to adjust after so long without it. Then I feel a sharp tug at my hair, yanking my limp body to my feet. Hell, I'm too weak to even stand on my own. The slap comes immediately after. My cheek burns, heat spreading across my skin as it reddens. "This is where you belong, you've always belonged here, you weakling. Open your eyes. Now." Another slap lands across my face, stinging so badly it forces a gasp from my lips. I squeeze my eyes open, knowing she won't stop until I do. Nova, my mate's fiancée… or maybe his wife now. I don't even know anymore. With trembling, weak hands, I try to sign, to explain that I can't, that I'm too weak.. Another slap cuts me off instantly. "Open your fucking eyes, or speak… oh, wait," she sneers, her lips curling in cruel amusement. "I forgot, you can't talk. You're wolfless. You can't even speak. How are you even a princess?" I keep my hands to myself. I don't know why I even bother trying to explain when years of experience have taught me that trying to communicate only brings more punishment. I force my eyes open, the light piercing through my vision. It burns, by the goddess, it burns. I blink rapidly, fighting to adjust, struggling just to keep them open. And it's suddenly dawning on me that all this time… there's been a bulb in here, and they chose not to turn it on. Not until now. I stare right at the woman my mate chose over me. Long auburn hair. Flawless skin, everything mine isn't. She's two years older, confident, able to speak without hesitation. Her wolf is strong, her bloodline powerful. Everything I'm not. Just a useless princess, mute, wolfless, hidden away my entire life like some shameful secret. I don't even remember my past. But I do remember Warren, my mate. He promised to rule in my place, said it was for the good of the people. That it would be a disaster if they ever found out the truth… that their only heir to the throne is a silent, broken princess. Another smack lands straight across my face. "You should be lucky you're breathing the same air as I am, weakling." With a snap of her fingers, two guards come out and seize me away from her. Oh hell yeah, they're finally here to kill me. "I think I need to wash my hands before you fucking infect me with your dumbness," she adds. The two guards are still holding me captive, even though my weak legs struggle to stand. It's all just wobble and weakness, since I've been used to crawling. Standing only drains more energy from me. "Who knows? You'll finally be of good use to us. Alpha Ronan is making his appearance here today, and these guards will see to your meal and dress. Be on your finest behavior. Is that clear?" Alpha Ronan? I haven't met him in person, but I have heard of him—the last fearless Alpha across every pack. The same Alpha that rumors say every wife he takes ends up dying. Rumor has it his wolf is a beast and ends up feasting on every wife he gets. Why is he coming? What does he need with Warren? And above all, why does Nova want me on my best behavior? I nod, knowing if I don't, it's clearly going to earn me another punishment. She barks orders at the guards, then hisses, spits on the floor, and walks away. I weakly stare after her, catching the familiar gown she's putting on. That gown is mine. It used to be my favorite. As a matter of fact, it's the gown I wore during Warren and my mating ceremony. One of the guards slings me over his shoulder, carrying me straight to one of the pack quarters. The maids who once worked for me are nowhere to be found, and instead, I meet strange faces. "Hang around, Josie. We'll need your help carrying her. We need to bathe her first, then give her food so she can rest and recover. And Cassie, go get the herbs that'll strengthen her bones," the eldest maid orders, and everyone begins acknowledging her instructions. Josie, the guard carrying me, leads me to the bathtub and carefully lowers me into the warm bath. My entire body of sores stings upon coming in contact with the water and whatever it's been mixed with. I can't scream. I'm too weak to even sign. Hours later, I'm already dressed and heading down the stairs, even though my body hasn't entirely recovered. But for what it's worth, I eat a good amount of food, drink water to my fill, and the herbs the maid gives me are quite effective. I descend the stairs all alone, the gown I wear flowing as I walk. My body is weak, but I try my best. I still don't know what the Alpha wants with our pack. I should be more concerned about someone coming to help me away from all this, and maybe someone who will listen to me instead of shunning me away when I try to sign something. Relief floods through me when I reach the last step to the ground floor, but just then, I step on my gown, stumbling forward and expecting to hit the floor. But suddenly, I find myself caught, staring into a strong pair of eyes, the most bedazzling eyes I've ever seen. My heart rate spikes.~ ROSELLE ~With Ronan gone, I don't know what becomes of me in this pack.My biggest fear is running into Ravenna after she told me to leave… or crossing paths with Mara. I'm not scared of her exactly. I'm just trying to ignore the whole "I slept with your man, I'm his mate, and you're nothing more than a placeholder" situation. I keep hoping Ronan's investigation will prove it isn't true. That it was all a cruel lie.I already have my day planned.I'll have breakfast with Celeste, who's probably already waiting for me in the dining room. I'm actually looking forward to the day I'll be able to cook my own meals. Celeste has been teaching me, and I can't wait to get good at it.After breakfast, I'll head to the library to pick out a few books and work on plotting my own story. I always think more clearly in the library. It's easier to focus there than staying in this room… where every corner, every piece of furniture, every lingering scent reminds me of him.I move to the table, helpi
~ ROSELLE ~My eyes prop open when I hear a soft knock on the door. The morning light slams into my eyes, making me squeeze them shut immediately. I slowly rise from the bed, half-blind, as I make my way to the window and shut it.Hell, how did I end up sleeping without closing the windows?Oh well, that's another sign of how much I miss Ronan. He's always right there, taking care of the little things I need before I even ask. He seems to know me better than I know myself. My lashes flutter as my eyes finally adjust, relieving the ache from the blinding light. I yawn and stretch before my morning nature calls. My bladder reminds me that I need to relieve myself.Another knock.Oh hell, that's what woke me up. Someone's at the door.I drag myself to the door, my hand already reaching for the knob before I even question who's standing outside or take a second to think.I almost feel my heart stop when I see Ronan standing there. He's already dressed, ready to leave the pack.My heart ac
~ RONAN ~Even though I'm leaving her in Nikolai's care, I can't just walk away like that. The last two times I trusted him to watch over her, something went wrong. The first time, Mara got into her room. The second time, those two pack guards cornered her because they wanted their little revenge. I can't afford to make that mistake again.Even though I'm exhausted, I change my destination. Instead of heading to my room to sleep, I make my way to the Seer. Maybe she can help me. Maybe she can create some kind of connection that lets me know the moment Roselle is in danger.Entering her quarters, I find her seated before the temple, an incense stick burning beside her. Wisps of smoke curl through the air. She stills as though she senses my presence before her eyes slowly lift to meet mine.I bow my head in respect."What brings you here, Alpha?" she asks, her calm voice echoing softly through the temple.I hesitate for a beat before stepping closer. "I need your help," I say quietly,
~ RONAN ~The training ring, just as I expect, is usually empty at this hour. The late evening shadows stretch across the padded floor, reminding me why I'm here; A place where people test their strength and push their limits.Nikolai is already in the ring, leaning against the ropes. His eyes stay on me, and I can already see the question in them before he even opens his mouth."Let me guess," he says the moment I step into the ring. "You're here because you're bored and think it'd be fun to get your ribs broken by your Beta. Sounds like a great way to spend your last evening before the three-day Council meeting."I don't answer. Instead, I pull off my shirt and toss it onto the bench beside the ring."Or," Nikolai continues, watching me with narrowed eyes, "we could go run some laps. How many would you like? Fifty? A hundred?""One hundred and fifty," I say coldly, rolling my shoulders to loosen them. "And we both know you're going to hate every single one of them."Nikolai's entir
~ RONAN ~I was out of the room before anyone could change my mind. The door slammed shut behind me with a resounding thud that echoed down the hallway like a final declaration. I'd made my choice, and I didn't see Mara in my future.Mom might not see past the sweet facade Mara was trying to put up, but deep down, it was only a matter of time before I exposed the truth — that Mara wasn't the innocent girl she pretended to be, or at lease she was, but not anymore.I strode down the hallway toward my office, intending to wrap up whatever work I could for the day, then find Roselle. If she'd let me. I understood her need for space after the bomb Mara had dropped. The accusation was enough to make any woman retreat. Especially Roselle, with the trauma she'd endured. I wouldn't push her. I'd give her time. But Goddess, it hurt like hell knowing she was hurting because of me.Standing outside my office was a young courier, a warrior barely out of his teens, waiting patiently with a sealed
~ RONAN ~I push open the heavy wooden doors to my mother's chambers without knocking, my jaw clenched so tightly it aches.I need to have this conversation. I need to establish boundaries that should have been set long ago. Because if I don't do it now, if I don't make it crystal clear that she needs to stay the fuck out of my relationship with Roselle, she's going to keep crossing lines, keeps interfering and she's definitely going to keep trying to control my life and my choices. And I'm done with it.My mother is sitting at her vanity, examining her reflection in the ornate mirror. She looks up when I enter, and surprise flashes across her features."Ronan," she says, setting down her jewelry with slowly. "What an unexpected visit. Did the sky fall today? Is there some catastrophe I'm unaware of that would prompt you to seek me out without me extending an invitation?""We need to talk," I say coldly, crossing the room to stand before her. "About you and Roselle, and about your in
