It had to be lies. He would have told me. He told me everything. Nate tightens his arms around me. But I see how they all look at me. A look of pity.

“That can’t be true. I knew my dad.”

A few moments later Brant comes back into the room. He nods his head at Vella.

“My Beta has just confirmed it is true.”

It was too much. I felt sick. Everything I had known was a lie.

“What is even more fascinating is you.” Vella is smiling

“Me?”

“You’re mother, you were told she died. Correct?” How did he know that?

“During childbirth. My dad told me. Why? What do you know about my mother?”

The more the conversation went on, the sicker I felt. I was certain I was going to vomit all over Nate.

“She’s alive.”

I had heard of stories where people felt like everything around them stopped. Like the whole world had come to a standstill. I didn’t imagine it to be like this. The silence was loud. I could hear my heart thudding like it was in my head. My stomach churned as I fought to keep the food inside
