LOGINChapter 7
Louis My heart broke into a million pieces as I stood beside the hospital bed. Looking at Elara hurt me more than any physical pain ever could. She looked so small and pale under the heavy white blankets. And watch time, her chest rose and fell in slow, weak movements, it made my pulse race. Suddenly, her eyes fluttered open and she blinked a few times to get used to the bright hospital lights overhead. When she saw me and the guys standing around her, she tried to smile but her face felt completely locked in place. She could not move her lips into a real smile. Instead, she slowly opened her mouth and mouthed a quiet "thank you" to us. Tears started to flow down my face but I didn't make a sound, I didn't want the guys to see me sobbing but I couldn't help it. I just cried quietly because seeing my little sister like this felt like someone was squeezing my chest with a heavy iron hand. Every breath she took felt like a knife twisting inside my own heart. I hated myself for not being there when she needed me most. I leaned in closer to her face and whispered softly, "Elara... are you in pain?" She gave a very small nod with her head. Ronan crossed his arms and looked down at the cold floor. "Now would be a good time to take her to the private clinic in Eldermore," Ronan said in a low voice. "We can run the proper blood tests for silver root there where we have full equipment." Jace shook his head right away. "We cannot move her in this condition, Ronan," Jace warned. "It is way too risky. She has not healed from that stab wound yet, and because her wolf is so weak from whatever Damien gave her, her body cannot heal fast like a normal werewolf. Driving her across town right now could kill her." I wiped the tears from my cheeks with the back of my hand. We could not take her to the clinic, so we had to bring the clinic to her. "I will handle it," I said, pulling out my phone. I called the medical center right away. "Send a representative to the central hospital immediately," I demanded into the receiver. "Bring every piece of testing equipment you need to check a wolf's blood. Meet us in private ward four right now." Twenty minutes later, the door opened and the medical representative walked into the room carrying a heavy metallic case. As soon as he saw Elara lying in the bed covered in bandages, the shock on his face was clear. He almost dropped his silver case right onto the floor. He stared at us with wide eyes and asked, "Is... is she going to be okay?" Nobody answered him for a long moment. The room was totally quiet as Elara slowly turned her head a tiny bit and shook it. She was definitely not okay. Jace broke the heavy silence. "She was attacked by rogues," he explained coldly. "Just do the tests." The representative nodded quickly. "Right. I was told to check her blood for silver root," he said as he opened his case. He frowned deeply as he looked down at her pale skin. "However, her blood could be laced with something else entirely. I need to run a full panel and check for other forms of poison too, just in case." He set up his machines on the table and looked at us politely. "I must ask you all to step outside and excuse me while I do my job." "We're not leaving," I snapped, standing firmly beside my sister's bed. "I am staying right here with my sister." The representative looked at my face. I could tell he saw the fire and the deep pain in my eyes, "Very well," he murmured. "You may stay." The hours crawled by like snails. Ten whole hours passed while the representative drew blood and ran test after test on his monitors. We sat on the hard chairs and waited in silence. When the ten hours finally ended, the testing process was completed. But the work was still not done. The representative had to wait another two hours for his machine to print out the final report. Those two hours felt like years of pure torture. Finally, the representative picked up the paper report. He looked extremely serious as he turned to face us. "I was right about her blood," the representative stated in a grim voice. "She has indeed been laced with silver root for years. But that is not all. I found another poison mixed into her system called crimson nightshade. It has been building up in her body alongside the silver root for a very long time." Then his face turned even paler. "I also found a third poison in her bloodstream," he added. "This one just entered her body recently, and it is settling deep inside her abdomen." "It was the stab wound!" I growled, clenching my fists until my knuckles turned white. "The rogue's blade was poisoned!" Anger flared up inside me like a raging fire. I felt even more sick to my stomach knowing that Damien and his rogues did not just want to drag her back. Their main aim was to kill her all along. "She was very lucky to survive the blade strike," the representative continued, scanning the paper closely. "However, the poison laced on that blade is not strong enough to kill a werewolf on its own." He paused and swallowed hard, looking genuinely confused. "There is something else on that report. The blade contained another strange substance, but my equipment cannot identify it at all. It acts almost as though it does not even exist." "What do you mean it does not exist?" I demanded. "How can a poison be there if your machines cannot..." Before I could finish my sentence or demand another answer, a soft, ragged sound broke through the room. Cough! Cough! We all turned our heads fast. Elara started coughing weakly on the bed, distracting us all and drawing every single one of our eyes straight back to her.RonanJust as I was about to open the door, the burner phone inside my jacket pocket began to ring. I paused for a second, my fingers slipping off the brass knob. I reached into my coat, pulled out the phone, and stared down at the blank screen. Only one person had this number."Is that him?" Elara asked instantly, her eyes widening with a sudden surge of hope."Hold on," I grunted and slid my thumb across the screen before pressing the phone tightly against my ear. "Louis?""Ronan," Louis’ voice came through the speaker. It sounded strangely distant and hollowed out by static, but it was definitely him. "Don't go to the train station."I narrowed my eyes, my body locking up with instant tension. "What are you talking about? Where the hell are you, Louis? We found the note you left behind. We were literally stepping out the door to come get you.""I know," Louis replied, letting out a heavy, tired breath over the static. "That's why I am calling right now. The note was a distraction.
Elara The next morning, the sun streaming through the dusty windows illuminated the room. I blinked sleepily against the bright rays, slowly waking up from the deep sleep Jace had guarded through the night.I sat up gently on the sofa and pulled the thick wool blanket away from my shoulders. The spot right beside me on the cushion where Jace was supposed to be was empty. He was already gone, though his jacket still hung over the back of the wooden chair. My heart did a quick, nervous flip as everything from last night kept rushing back in. I pushed myself up off the sofa, pressing my hand lightly against my side where the ache had dulled into a mild soreness. I made my way out of the room and walked quickly down the quiet hallway toward Louis's room only to find the door standing wide open. The bed was completely untouched and the blankets were still smooth and flat.Louis was not back yet. I panicked instantly as I hurried out of the room and walked into the main living area wh
ElaraI placed my forehead and my hand on the window, breathing heavily as I watched Loius get back into the car. But he didn't drive away immediately. My heart hammered faster as I anticipated the moment he was going to drive away. Three minutes went by and get still hadn't drove away. I stood there in suffocating silence as I watched the car. The headlights of the car went off for as second before they came back on again. It was as though he was trying to pass a message and he knew I was watching him. Finally, he drove off. I stood for another ten minutes, breathing air so hot against the window, it had created a fog around my mouth area. "Elara?"I almost jumped out of my skin. My entire body jerked as I stepped back from the window and turned around to see who it was. "Are you okay, Elara?" Jace asked, his eyes going wide with concern. "No...I mean...yes I am. I'm fine." I lied. He stared at me for a moment, running his piercing eyes all over the room. "You don't look fine
Elara The icy wind bit into my cheeks, but I stood completely still against the rough bark of the tree, my breath hitching in my chest. The sleek car was idling quietly at the very edge of the gravel trail causing my heart to hammer against my ribs like a trapped bird.I pressed my back against the thick tree trunk, digging my fingernails into my palms to keep from crying out. I tried to pull my senses together, listening past the rush of blood in my ears. The car door opened with a faint, metallic sound, followed by the heavy thud of a boot hitting the ground. I peeked carefully around the tree trunk, my vision straining through the dark only to see a tall figure stepping out into the moonlight, shutting the car door with a quiet push.My eyes widened in pure shock. Oh moon goddess, it wasn't Damien at all...it was Loius! The heavy wave of terror in my chest vanished in a single second, replaced by complete bewilderment. Without thinking twice, I broke away from the cover of the
Elara The doors of the grand hall slammed shut behind us with an echoing boom that rattled right through my bones. The afternoon wind was whipping across the stone courtyard of the assembly grounds but I didn't flinch because I couldn't feel the chill. My entire body was completely numb, frozen in a state of suffocating shock. The council's verdict was hanging in the air like an executioner's axe. Damien had won, the high council had backed him completely, and my own terrible secret had been twisted into the ultimate chain to bind me to him forever.Louis walked beside me, dragging his feet heavily against the pavement. His jaw was locked tight, and his fists were clenched so hard his knuckles looked stark white against his skin.Jace, Kieran and Ronan followed behind us in silence with grim expression on their faces. Nobody said a word until we got to the parking area where our vehicle was waiting for us. Louis opened the passenger door of the car for me, his movements were a
Elara The grand hall of the annual pack assembly felt like a cage. There were hundreds of wolves that had taken their seats, all murmuring in low tones. At the center of the raised dais was the high council elders, draped in dark robes that hid their faces. To my left stood Damien, flanked by two armed guards. He was wearing a crisp, tailored suit, that made him look like the untouchable, powerful alpha he pretended to be. And standing beside him was Brielle. Louis was at my right, clenching his jaw so hard I thought they would shatter. Jace, Kieran and Jace were standing behind us. They were still battered and bandaged but they refused to leave my side despite their injuries. My heart was pounding fast against my ribs, every breath I took felt thin and it felt like I was drowning in a room full of people who had already decided I was guilty of nothing more than being an inconvenient female. The head elder raised a wrinkled hand, and the murmurs in the hall slowly died down."S
