The door burst inward with a crack of splintering wood.

A massive gray wolf forced its way through the broken frame, its eyes glowing in the dim light of the house. Another shape moved behind it in the darkness outside.

Aria stumbled backward.

“That is not normal,” she whispered.

Kael stepped forward without hesitation.

His entire posture shifted.

“Stay back,” he said quietly.

The wolf inside the doorway lowered its head and growled. Its lips pulled back to reveal long white fangs, and its muscles tensed like a spring ready to strike.

Aria’s heart slammed in her chest.

“That thing is huge.”

“It’s not a thing,” Kael replied.

“It’s a scout.”

The wolf lunged suddenly.

But Kael moved faster.

He intercepted it with shocking speed, grabbing the animal by the neck and slamming it sideways into the wall. The impact cracked the wood paneling and sent dust flying across the room.

Aria stared in disbelief.

“You just tackled a wolf.”

The animal snarled and tried to twist free.

Kael’s eyes darkened.

“You shouldn’t have come here,” he said.

The wolf suddenly shifted.

Fur receded and bones snapped into new shapes as the creature transformed into a human man on the floor. He groaned and pushed himself upright, glaring at Kael.

“You can’t hide her forever,” the man said.

Kael’s voice turned cold.

“She’s not yours to take.”

The man laughed harshly.

“She belongs to our Alpha.”

Aria felt a chill run through her.

“I belong to nobody,” she said.

The man’s eyes snapped toward her.

For a moment he simply stared.

Then his expression changed.

“So it’s true,” he murmured.

Kael stepped in front of her again.

“You’ve seen enough.”

The man wiped blood from his lip.

“Alpha Darius will be very pleased when we bring her back.”

Aria’s stomach dropped.

“You keep saying that name,” she said.

The man ignored her.

“Our Alpha has been searching for years,” he continued. “He’ll want to see how much she looks like her mother.”

Kael’s wolf surged beneath his skin.

“That’s enough.”

The man’s grin widened.

“You think claiming her will stop this?”

Aria frowned.

“Claiming me?”

Kael’s voice dropped dangerously.

“You’re leaving now.”

The man slowly pushed himself to his feet.

Behind him, the dark shapes of more wolves moved beyond the broken doorway.

“There are five more outside,” the man said calmly. “You can’t fight all of us alone.”

Kael didn’t move.

“I don’t need to.”

The ground trembled suddenly.

Low growls echoed through the forest beyond the house.

Aria’s eyes widened.

More wolves were emerging from the trees.

But these wolves were larger.

Darker.

And they were moving toward the house.

The man’s confidence vanished.

“You called your pack,” he said.

Kael’s voice was ice.

“You came into my territory.”

The growls outside grew louder.

One by one the rival wolves backed away from the doorway.

The man gave Aria one last look.

“We’ll be back,” he said quietly.

Then he shifted again and leapt into the forest.

The others followed quickly.

Within seconds the forest fell silent again.

Aria exhaled slowly.

“That was insane.”

Kael stepped toward the broken doorway and looked into the darkness for a long moment before turning back to her.

“You’re not safe here anymore,” he said.

“Because of my father.”

“Yes.”

Aria rubbed her temples.

“This day started with me trying to sell a house.”

“It ended with a pack war.”

She looked up at him.

“You’re serious about that.”

“Yes.”

Aria walked slowly toward the window and stared into the forest.

“So what happens now?”

Kael studied her carefully.

“My pack will come for you.”

“That sounds threatening.”

“To protect you.”

Aria turned back toward him.

“And if I don’t want protection?”

Kael stepped closer.

The distance between them felt charged with something neither of them could ignore.

“My wolf already chose you,” he said quietly.

Aria frowned.

“Your wolf keeps getting mentioned.”

“It’s the part of me that knows you’re my mate.”

The word hung in the air between them.

Mate.

Aria felt that strange warmth in her chest again.

“That’s impossible,” she said.

Kael didn’t argue.

“It doesn’t feel impossible.”

Before she could respond a deep howl echoed across the mountains.

Not from the forest.

From far away.

Kael froze.

That sound was different.

Older.

More powerful.

His wolf went completely still.

Aria noticed the change instantly.

“What was that?”

Kael’s voice was quiet.

“That,” he said, “was your father.”

And the howl meant only one thing.

The Alpha of the rival pack had entered his territory.

The room felt too small for what was happening inside her.Aria stood near the window, her fingers pressed lightly against the cold glass, but it did nothing to steady her. The night outside stretched wide and quiet, yet something beneath her skin refused to settle. It moved like a pulse that didn’t belong to her, sharp and restless, threading through her thoughts until she could no longer separate where it began and where she ended. She exhaled slowly, but the breath caught halfway. It wasn’t just the power. It wasn’t just the heat that came and went without warning. It was the bond.It had changed. After what happened earlier, something had shifted into place without her permission. What had once been a pull was now something deeper, tighter, like it had rooted itself beneath her ribs and refused to loosen. And now it wouldn’t let her think. The door opened without a knock.Aria didn’t turn. She didn’t need to.“You felt it too,” she said, her voice quieter than she intended.Behind

The room they gave her was quiet.Too quiet.Aria stood just inside the doorway for a moment before stepping in fully, her eyes moving slowly across the space. It was larger than she expected, simple but carefully kept, with a bed near the far wall and a window that looked out into the same dark stretch of forest.Everything about it was meant to feel safe.It didn’t.She closed the door behind her, the soft click echoing more than it should have. For a moment, she just stood there, letting the silence settle around her, but it didn’t settle. It pressed in instead, filling the space left behind by everything that had happened. Her body was still. Her mind wasn’t.She moved further into the room and stopped near the window, her reflection faint in the glass. For a second, she didn’t recognize herself. Not because she looked different, but because something behind her expression had changed.Awareness.She lifted her hand slowly, studying it again under the low light.Nothing had change

The pack house did not sleep that night. Even hours after the fight, movement continued through the halls in quiet waves. Voices stayed low, footsteps measured, doors opening and closing with care as if no one wanted to disturb the tension that still lingered beneath everything.Aria stood by one of the tall windows at the far end of the corridor, her arms loosely folded as she looked out into the forest. The trees stretched into darkness, still and silent, but they no longer felt distant or harmless. They felt watchful, like something unseen lingered just beyond the edge of sight. She hadn’t gone to the room they had given her. Rest felt impossible with everything pressing in on her thoughts. The night had changed too much, and so had she.“You’re going to wear a hole into that glass.”The voice came from behind her, calm but edged with something sharper.Aria didn’t turn right away. She had already learned to recognize people without seeing them.Mara.“I thought staring dramaticall

The clearing did not return to normal after Darius left. The noise was gone and the fighting had stopped, but the tension lingered in the air like something that refused to settle. Wolves remained where they stood, watching, waiting, as if expecting the night to turn again at any moment.Aria stayed near the steps, her breathing finally beginning to slow, though the feeling in her chest had not faded. The heat was still there, quieter now but steady, like something that had awakened and refused to go back to sleep. She looked down at her hands again. They looked the same.Nothing different. Nothing dangerous. And yet she had just thrown a full-grown wolf across a clearing without even understanding how.“That’s not normal,” she said under her breath.“No,” Kael replied, stepping closer. “It’s not.”His voice was calm again, but there was something beneath it now. Not fear. Not exactly. Something more controlled, more careful, as if he was measuring every word before saying it.Aria li

The wolf hit her before she could move, its weight slamming into her chest and driving her back against the wooden steps. The impact knocked the air from her lungs as claws scraped against the boards beside her, splintering the wood under the force. For a moment, everything blurred. Sound dulled. Thought fractured. All that remained was instinct.Survive.The wolf’s breath burned hot against her throat, its teeth hovering just inches from her skin. It hesitated, just like the last one had, its body tensing in confusion as if something about her didn’t make sense.Aria felt it too.The heat surged through her chest again, stronger this time, spreading rapidly down her arms and into her fingertips until it felt like her skin held something alive beneath it. The sensation wasn’t just warmth anymore. It was pressure, building and demanding release. The wolf growled, low and uncertain, then lunged.Aria reacted without thinking. The wolf was on her before she could move.Aria barely had time to raise her hands before the weight of it hit her, knocking her backward onto the ground. The air rushed out of her lungs as she struggled beneath it, claws digging into the wood beside her instead of her skin. The wolf hesitated.Just for a second. Its nose hovered near her throat as if something about her scent had confused it.Aria felt it.That same strange heat in her chest surged violently, spreading through her body in a sudden wave that made her vision blur for a moment. The wolf snarled. Then lunged.Aria reacted without thinking. Her hand shot up and pressed against its neck. The moment her skin made contact, something snapped.A sharp sound tore through the air as the wolf recoiled violently, letting out a strangled growl. It jerked backward as if burned, crashing into the ground beside her.Aria scrambled away, her breath coming fast.“What was that—”The wolf shifted.Fur pulled back into skin as the man rea
